to think that a music radio station should err... play music?

I have a 20 minute commute between my workplace and DS's nursery. On my way to pick him up yesterday I flicked my car radio between Radio 1 and the local radio station the whole way, hoping to hear some music. I heard the tail end of one song and that was it; the rest of the time was either the DJs bigging themselves up and name-dropping between inane laughter at unfunny jokes, adverts (local radio) or them talking about playing some music at soem point in the next 30 minutes. AIBU to:

  1. want to slap the person who texted the Moyle show the other day to 'stop playing so much music' round the face with a wet kipper; and

  2. think the DJs should actually, maybe, play some music? Please.

I usually listen to talk radio so I wouldn't mind them talking if it wasn't utter rubbish that I would have found ridiculous at the end of junior school. It's a bit like listening to a 10 year old boys talking about farts.

Actually, I did find Chris Moyles funny once - his plan for Prince William's balcony speech was hilarious. So why does he need to sound so thick the rest of the time?

If you want to listen to music then put a cd/tape on or get an iPod

Yabu - radio shows are about entertainment not just music. If you don't like a programme on the telly you don't watch it you switch over

Just turn it to a different station

AKMD · 22/07/2011 13:15

Pudding, did you actually read the whole thread?

In general - why do they think we want to listen to a load of people talking first thing in the morning?

When I commuted the morning trips were always quiet, and the way home more chatty.

When I'm asleep in the morning and I need to wake up I want bouncy music. ta very much.

Yabu for listening to Moyles and expecting to hear anything other than twattery.

For music, 6music is the answer - daytime is a bit playlist / song database heavy, but if you can listen in the evenings or on a Sunday there is a great variety of music - new, live bands, archive Peel sessions etc.

Try listening to Gideon Coe - your ears will feel as though they are being tenderly stroked , then refreshed and delighted by the music he plays. Your ears will be grateful, honestly.

Lady Clarice, Andrew Collins is adorable and I have to say I prefer him to SWK. I do miss Adam and Joe on a Saturday though.

Breakfast shows have always been heavy on talk. Going back to DLT etc. If you want to listen to music use an MP3 player or CDs, or digital radio, there are plenty of music only stations out there.

TartyMcFarty · 22/07/2011 13:30

Ugh, and what about Scott Mills and his sidekick in the afternoon? I'm sure they're nothing like as feeble and thick as they present themselves, but oh, they mince my brain.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 22/07/2011 13:33

Inertia, he IS adorable isn't he?! Don't like him on Saturdays with Josie Long though. Her voice annoys me, irrationally but inordinately. I miss Adam and Joe SO MUCH. I hope they come back. Did you ever hear the stuff they did about the American woman 'dialect coach' demonstrating how to pronounce the 'British' short 'o'? 'The dog was lost in the fog' ... I still listen to it too much occasionally and it still makes me cry with laughter.

Sidge · 22/07/2011 13:33

I absolutely hate Radio 1. DH has it on in the kitchen when he's cooking and it makes me want to badly hurt someone.

I listen to our local radio station - DH calls it Giffers FM but I love it, they play a mixture of current chart stuff and music from the 70s onwards. The weather, news and traffic reports are local (so relevant), and there is a small amount of chat but it's often quite funny. The adverts are annoying but now I tend to tune them out.

Flowerista · 22/07/2011 13:34

Radio 2 all the way to Steve Wright, then Magic, then back to R2 for Simon Mayo. Chris Evans is back Monday thank God and Richard Madly can pop back off to whence he came.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 22/07/2011 13:36

Oh and I agree about Scott Mills. Not nearly as funny as he thinks he is. In fact depressingly mediocre, and IMO a lot ruder (esp to callers-in) than Moyles.

cantpooinpeace · 22/07/2011 13:36

Don't mind Moylesy, Vernon Kay however is pure cheese on toast. Infact since Mark & Lard left its been poor. The only good one left is Coxy.

coastgirl · 22/07/2011 13:37

I love 6Music and I wish Adam and Joe were always on! For LadyClarice, were you listening when they were doing the Pierce Brosnan clip from that old film? DH and I can make each other cry laughing just by saying "well maybe you shouldn't be living heeeeeeeere!" now.

chickflit · 22/07/2011 13:39

I'm going to say Absolute and Christian O'Connell, they make me howl they are so funny, great music and of course the no repeat guarantee so you don't get the same song repeated every hour.

Chris Moyles is in fact a twat and I'd rather watch Daybreak if he was the only option I had to listen to on the radio.

DamselInDisarray · 22/07/2011 13:46

I hate Scott mills and his brainless sidekick too, and Sara Cox. Daytime radio 1 presenters in general really. And then in the evening they put on zane Lowe and I find that I hate him too. It might be ok if he just played music and never spoke but speak he does (honestly, how can anyone talk such unadulterated crap constantly).

I don't like chris Evans on radio 2 either. He seems to be the voice of the wilfully uninformed.

Quenelle · 22/07/2011 14:10

Does anyone else think of Alan Partridge when they're listening to Richard Madeley on Radio 2?

TartyMcFarty · 22/07/2011 14:23

I like Zane's music but am put off by his ego. I suspect that this thread may be used as future anti-MN ammunition (but perhaps not now it's been suggested!)

EssexGurl · 22/07/2011 14:33

I loathe Chris Moyles but DH likes him and he has the radio by his side of the bed. It isn't the lack of music that particularly annoys me - although that is an irritant. It is more the variable timing of the news. Every other show manages to have it on the hour/half hour correctly. CM ends up more often than not having it at 7.10 or some such nonsense, so we end up getting up late. I am desperate to move to Chris Evans but DH won't hear of it.

LaWeasel · 22/07/2011 14:34

I don't mind Zane.

(Kiwi solidarity possibly) But I don't often listen at that time of day.

I also don't know why it would be a problem to want more music on a music station!

Someone up thread said there are loads of stations that only play music... I know of none! What are they? I have a digital radio and am willing to be converted.

CurrySpice · 22/07/2011 15:02

Ok

For those suggesting digital radio...the OP says she is listening in the car and no chance of getting a digital radio there

For those saying listen to a CD or MP3 player, the OP says she is looking for some new music, not what she already has

Read the thread people. Read the thread!!

DamselInDisarray · 22/07/2011 15:14

It is possible to get a digital radio in your car if you want one.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 22/07/2011 15:23

coastgirl, yes to Adam and Joe and Brosnan's frankly bizarre line reading! Grin Grin
Oh how I love them particularly Adam who is hot hot hot.
