to wear the same top 4 days in a row to work?

I've been so busy with work and kids that i've not had time to do a laundry wash at all this week and I only had one top on Monday that wasnt in the laundry basket. I could iron one, but with this and that, i've not had time, so today will be the 4th day I have this top on. I shower every day btw and it's a sedantry office job, sat at a desk all day, so not getting all sweaty!

Why shouldn't she wear the same top 4 days in a row? What terrible thing is going to happen? Personally I wouldn't go 4 days (3 maybe and almost always 2) but then my job can get a bit physical and sweaty sometimes. But so what as long as she looks and feels clean? If you're just sitting there in an office all day exactly what sort of dirt is getting on that top? I think a lot of the dirt on our clothes is imaginary, like on my DH's shirts he insists on washing after every wear (he also sits in an office).

Milngavie · 21/07/2011 11:19

I wear a clean top every day and I have an office job too. Our office is very warm and I just can't bring myself to wear the same top 2 days in a row let alone 3 or 4.

It doesn't take that long to iron a top.

ShirleyKnot · 21/07/2011 11:24

I work in an office eastegg. What do you think happens in offices? They're not hermetically sealed areas!

NoMoreWasabi · 21/07/2011 11:33

I wear a clean top daily for work. More than 2 days is really too much unless you're only wearing it for a couple of hours at a time.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 21/07/2011 11:35

Sorry, but YABU for not having a clean top to wear every single day at work. I'll happily wear a top for 2-3 days if it seems clean, but not if I'm going to be at the same place. I don't want to appear manky Wink

sausagesandmarmelade · 21/07/2011 11:36

Don't do it....

LadyFlumpalot · 21/07/2011 11:37

Even if you don't smell after 4 days, people will start to think it a bit odd, wouldn't they? I would if I saw one of my colleagues wearing the same top 4 days in a row...Or am I just strange?

eastegg · 21/07/2011 11:39

Of course they're not hermetically sealed. But they do tend to get properly cleaned regularly. And the OP said she was sat all day not getting sweaty. That's what I'm getting at.

To continue to answer questions with another question, what happens in your office shirleyknot?

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 21/07/2011 11:40

I'm just envious that you CAN wear a top for that long and get away with it! I sweat loads (TMI, probably, sorry) and ideally would change at lunchtime and then again if I was going out in the evening.

ShirleyKnot · 21/07/2011 11:42

Er. I sit at a desk working on a computer. I get up and get myself a drink. I sweat lightly. I eat some food. I sit back at my desk. Dust exists. I sweat a bit more - just because I'm, like, a human being.

It's basic personal hygiene not to wear the same top for four days in a row whether you work in an office or on a building site.

hth

worraliberty · 21/07/2011 11:44

I doubt anyone can wear a top and get away with it 4 days in a row.

You might not smell your own body OP, but you can bet your life others will.

I walked out of the school gate yesterday morning with a woman and in the wide open air, she absolutely fucking honked of BO. I've sat inside classrooms with her before and she has never smelled of anything in the past...but yesterday, well she made my eyes water. God knows how she couldn't smell herself Sad

FaultyGoods · 21/07/2011 11:44

I work in a very small office and a woman in my office wears the same outfit for the whole working week Shock. It is manky. She also wears really thick woolly jumpers when it's 25 degrees outside, I hate to think what she smells like up close. Confused I tend to avoid going too near her.

Jenstar21 · 21/07/2011 11:46

Clean clothes every day, or else you'll be branded 'the smelly one'.....

lesley33 · 21/07/2011 11:50

I know people can't always tell when they smell. But when I get up in the morning I always smell my clothes to see if they are clean enough to wear again - including under the armpits. If I think they smell at all I don't wear them.

Sometimes 1 day is enough, more usually 2 or 3 days is enough.

lesley33 · 21/07/2011 11:53

I have noticed in the last 5 years more and more people who only wear things for 1 day before washing them. Sometimes this is necessary, but I think it is OTT to do it all the time.

minkymeerkat · 21/07/2011 11:57

You might be a tad smelly close up, two days max for tops

jugofwildflowers · 21/07/2011 12:01

YABVU

People who don't think they smell are the worst, oh your poor work colleagues.

It doesn't matter if you haven't sweated into it at all because it will not be fresh, and things that aren't fresh pick up odours which you are probably used to but can be heady to people who are not.

Get yourself a sheila maid or equivalent (you can google it).

Then hang those laundry hanger with pegs thingies (from Wilkinsons etc) off the bars and you'll be able to hang up your shirts straight out of the washing machine, no ironing needed as they air dry wrinkle free.

EightiesChick · 21/07/2011 12:01

I am both disorganised and bad at housekeeping, and even I wouldn't wear a top for 4 days. I usually wear 1 day only but would do 2 if I'd showered, because then it's not you and the top smelling IYSWIM.

I admire your ability to go 4 days without you or your DC spilling something on your clothes too - never happens in this house Smile

Agree that sometimes people get OTT about laundry - I wash DH's shirts on a light wash, for instance, because he is not doing a physical job. I also leave skirts and trousers a fair bit longer - have seen posters say they wash jeans after every wear, which seems frankly insane to me. But 4 days on a top, that's been next to your armpits, really is a bit much. I'd definitely wear an unironed top rather than a dirty one - as has been said, half the time creases don't show/don't get noticed.

harrietthespook · 21/07/2011 12:02

Get off mumsnet and wash your clothes woman! Wink

SchrodingersMew · 21/07/2011 12:03

Yuck! It's been really warm and clammy, that top will smell...

Personally I couldn't wear a top 2 days in a row, but I realise for others the max is 2 days and this isn't that bad but 4!?

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 21/07/2011 12:03

Believe me, changing my clothes daily is NOT OTT; it's an act of common decency for all who have to live with me, sit next to me on the bus or even walk past me in the street! I know people are different though. My DP can wear T-shirts for a week and genuinely not smell. I don't know how he does it but he is about the unstinkiest person I've ever met. Envy

worraliberty · 21/07/2011 12:04

OP, how do your kid's manage if you haven't done a wash all week?

Mind would be minging by now Lol

worraliberty · 21/07/2011 12:04

*mine

Salmotrutta · 21/07/2011 12:05

I never wear the same top 2 days in a row but then I feel very guilty about the wasteful use of energy and water and the way all these chemicals pollute the water systems Confused
Don't want to sound all tree-huggy and sandal-wearing but I'm trying to cut down on unecessary washing and will recycle outer garments just that little bit more often e.g. alternate jumpers/cardis on different days and wash after 3 wears instead of 2. If that makes sense??
But I do wash underwear and camisole vests etc. every day - honest!

Chandon · 21/07/2011 12:07

Well, love, instead of going on MN, you could have ironed a fresh one.

Shock ...I have turned into my mum! Shock

Anyway, I don't care as I don't work with you!
