Could the school have lied?

My son went on a trip about 3/weeks ago. it was a one non residential (he is 5, foundation year).

Anyway the bus broke down when it took them from the place back to the school. they got home at 6pm rather than 3pm. children were crying, over tired and hungry. the school had used the same bus company the previous week and it had broken down at least twice the week before and they still used the company.

Anyway, my son has been telling me that it didnt actually brake down, the coach tried to drive under a bridge and crashed into it as the coach was too tall. now hes 5, and he can talk alot of well.... but he was adament about it, hes been saying it my parents, my boyfs parents and me. he said the coach was dented and that they didnt know the coach couldnt fit under the bridge and it had a crash. then they had to call another.

im not the type of parent to belive every word all the time that their children say, but he seems very sure.

if there was a crash, no matter how small. the coach didnt break down, and they havent told the parents.

what do you think?

There's no point in overthinking the situation.

Get the facts first.

I, too, often have found that my telephone does not work when it rains.

Flisspaps · 19/07/2011 18:20

I find that too BeardofZeus, it's a right pain in the arse Hmm

Perhaps it was raining when the incident happened? Wink

He might just be bright and have made it up. I made up all kind of things "we did at school" when I was his age.
I think if there had been an accident it would have been in the local paper, its not something you can keep secret.

Can you phone the bus company? Can the police look at their buses to see if there's any evidence of this on one of their vehicles?

cricketballs · 19/07/2011 18:39

why would you think that the school lied? There is no reason for them to do so as it is the coach company that would have to bear any costs etc.

In terms of the coach company having a bus break down last week but still using them for this trip it would be down to contracts/bookings etc

I heard once that the headteacher of one school told the parents of the new children at the first assembly "We won't take every silly comment about the terrible things that happen to them at home seriously, if you don't take every comment they say about the school seriously."

Of course, that is a policy that could go wrong if taken too far.
