to think it's weird of my friend to be so het up about pram choice when she is so laissez faire about everything else?

I have a friend who is very keen to tell women that going back to work after having children is very important, that you shouldn't get misty eyed about spending time with your children etc etc.

She advocates c-sections and formula feeding (both of which I've done myself, so believe me, this is not a criticism of her choices).

She very much thinks it's important to be your own person after children and to make yourself happy and put yourself whenever you feel the need to.

So far, so whatever.

I don't know why, but I just find it weird that she is also a screeeeeeaming pram hun. Specifically, for any kind of Bugaboo. The BILE that spits forth from her mouth about using any old stroller rather than a decent, pricey pram just amuses me.

I don't know why I find it incongruous, but I do.

loving the term pram hun! i don't understand the obsession. it was a very important decision for me second time as i just bought the first thing i could afford first time because he turned up early and i panic bought. i made a good choice (britax vigour 4+, forward or rear facing and good for newborns btw Wink ) and that's me done, 2 yrs and still use it all the time. i dont get people who get through a new one every 3 months. why???? the bugaboo thing is 75% posing, often more.

HoneyNorwegianRidgebackdragon · 15/07/2011 23:07

Britax Vigour best push chair ever (and the Bee+)

i'm actually considering having another baby just so i can keep the vigour. i'm evangelical about it.

Nellythecat · 16/07/2011 02:23

I don't even have a baby yet but I already know that if/when I do then I want a silver cross pram. Not the modern type - the classic carriage type. There's no way that I could afford to buy one brand new, but I don't mind second hand as long as I have one. That's the only material thing that I'm bothered about - don't care what type of cot, car seat, highchair etc that I use as long as I have a silver cross pram. I don't go on about it to people though. That would be really odd seeing as I'm not even pregnant!

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 16/07/2011 02:32

oh FFS - this has turned into a Pram-huns-by-stealth thread!!

I don't get the pramhunnery, but I think in the context of your "friend", it's all part and parcel of the "see what I've done, that's what everyone should do, because I know best" thang. I'd kick her into touch, she'd drive me bats.

I had my friend's M&P Primaviaggio travel system off her. Loved the carrier seat, wasn't so keen on the pushchair/pram chassis (bugger to fold and heavy) but the system was a lovely idea. And I did like having DS to talk to when he was facing me in the seat-in-the-pram - was quite sad when he got too big and had to face forwards!

Here in Australia, MIL managed to acquire a very interesting buggy that does forward and rear facing; the handle clicks over so you can push it either way (although it's harder to steer when rear-facing cos the steery wheels are in the wrong place.) But it was useful when very strong sun/wind interfered with DS's enjoyment of the walk, I could just face him away from it. NO idea what make it is though.

Nelly before I had DS I thought I wanted one of those as well. We used to have one and my Dad gave it away Angry. But then I realised how bloody inconvenient it would be to have a pram that can't be folded or put in the car etc. etc. so didn't mourn its loss any longer.

ScatCatShoo · 16/07/2011 05:29

Everyone ends up with a MacLaren, so why bother with all the flummery first? :)

hairfullofsnakes · 16/07/2011 07:07

Well I think most of the stuff your friend spouts is shite but she is right about the bugaboo. If you try one you will see why - moves and handles like a dream, baby can face either way, it lasts and is great in the snow... Amazing customer service from the manufacturers... Worth every penny - it's an amazing pram and a pleasure to push around! Nothing else moves like it!

No I don't work for bugaboo. But I should!

hairfullofsnakes · 16/07/2011 07:11

Nellycat I challenge you to try a bugaboo against a silvercross! When you have a baby your needs will change and this pram offers great comfort to baby and to you steering it.

Loving the bugaboo is not about it being a brand to show off it is about it being the best pram out there!

exoticfruits · 16/07/2011 07:13

I can never understand the pram thing-I had my neighbours old one that she got out of the loft and gave me free. It is a bit like a car-as long as it does the job does it matter?

Bonsoir · 16/07/2011 07:15

Your "friend" sounds amazingly self-serving and appearance conscious, through and through.

hairfullofsnakes · 16/07/2011 07:15

Skulls - you haven't found the ideal pram because you don't have a BUGABOO! Grin

catgirl1976 · 16/07/2011 07:16

mmmm have just looked at the bugaboo. It is nice. But £900? Are you promising me it is worth everyone of those pennies hairfullofsnakes?

hairfullofsnakes · 16/07/2011 07:17

That's so not true exotic - My bugaboo makes all the difference because it movessssss so well!

hairfullofsnakes · 16/07/2011 07:21

Catgirl... Honestly just try it... Go to John Lewis and have a demo and let me know what you think! You can find better prices on some websites (like theoxfordpramcentre) or second hand (I'll be selling mine soon!)

But please... Just go and have a try and report back... You will be a follower... I guarantee it! Wink

catgirl1976 · 16/07/2011 07:23

Righty - thats Saturday sorted :) am already off to Ikea for some nursery bits so a trip to John Lewis to try out the Bugaboo is now on as well!

Will let you know how it goes Hair x

Longtalljosie · 16/07/2011 07:34

Catgirl - consider the size of your car. I have a Cameleon but it's the Maclaren XT which gets the most use as it doesn't take up the whole of the boot...

pinkthechaffinch · 16/07/2011 07:43

You need to get yourself down to the carboot, OP, and get yourself a battered preloved Graco Travel System for £10.

That's what I did for dd bless her, when I was unaware of all the pram hunnery.

EverythingsNotRosie · 16/07/2011 07:43

I think I'm a pram-spotter but I only have two of my own- Icandy Cherry in Mulberry which sits in the house and occasionally gets walked into town and a cheap Mamas and Papas one which is umbrella folding and a hideous pink and lives in the car- and gets used all the time! No one told me that 1) my baby would only fit in the carrycot for 12 weeks and 2) I would hate using a pram that had to be in two pieces to fold up!

catgirl1976 · 16/07/2011 07:45

Oh god good point - the car boot is tiny :(

Longtalljosie · 16/07/2011 07:51

Bugaboo bee then possibly, rather than Cameleon?

catgirl1976 · 16/07/2011 07:54

I will give them a try out :) I bet John Lewis don't allow you to walk out with a selection of prams to which ine fits in your boot :(

5GoMadOnAZ650 · 16/07/2011 07:58

I have a bugaboo bee and it's the first pram I've kept for over 3 months and I'm on dd4 so lots of prams Grin I've had it a year now and will use it right up until I don't need to use a buggy anymore, no strollers needed if you have a bee :)

NormanTebbit · 16/07/2011 08:04

I inherited bugaboo Gecko and was not impressed. The hood kept falling off, the two little front wheels were hard to judge on kerns, the seat is tiny and the storage basket fell off. You can't hang shoppingor anything off the back so often it resembled a sort of wheel barrow full of bags and coats (3DC) going on public transport is a no no.

I liked the mountain buggy and maclaren. I have a second hand techno which totally does the job.
