To think those boycotting anything to do with Murdoch are mugs

what the hell do you think you will achieve. So far lots of journalists and all their support staff have been made unemployed. Do you want the people at Sky and all the other Murdoch companies in the UK to lose their jobs too. You are not punishing Murdoch you are purnishing largely innocent people. Get a grip.

OK thanks, but after weight taken at GPs, need to lose about 5 stone when I thought it was only 3 to lose :( Hospital appt in 2 weeks, but best not go there!

ilovemydogandMrObama · 14/07/2011 02:20

what do people in Liverpool read?

JamieAgain · 14/07/2011 05:18

Wot MrsDevere said. Exactly.

lovecat · 14/07/2011 07:15

Not the Sun, Ilovemydog :)

(If my parents are anything to go by, The Mirror and The Echo. The Daily Post if they're feeling posh)

SydSaid · 14/07/2011 07:31

Hmm, the thing that really killed the News of the World wasn't people not buying it (they hadn't had time to gauge that one!) it was advertisers pulling out. Everyone that knows anything about the business of newspapers knows that the revenue from sales is secondary to advertising revenue as far as income goes.

So blame Boots, Sainsburys etc, if you need to find a scapegoat - but in reality, the one people to blame are those that hacked the phones in the first place.

SydSaid · 14/07/2011 07:33

one people? Ooops. Just people.

Peachy · 14/07/2011 07:44

Well Dh used to work on one of their contracts and was treated badly then about 2 years ago became one of the first ones to lose his job, albeit differently. Nothing to do with NI Management but let's just say some of the lower down staff were happy to shaft him to save their own careers. Why would we weep for them now? I doa ctually feel sorry for them becuase we know how hard this past 2 years has been but not enough to override the desire to avoid NI stuff.

Haven't ever wanted to buy any Murdoch stuff apartf rom Times and that was easy enough to swap, not exactly losing out by not touching owt related in this house. Sky wsn't something I ever bothered over anyway. Already have plenty of crap TV to choose from.

Peachy · 14/07/2011 07:47

However Op if you are as I wonder one of those losing their job sympathies to you. You will find as we did that you are grateful to have paid into a system of NI for years and be able to carry on.

fastweb · 14/07/2011 07:55

how do the Italians put up with Berlusconi I have never understood it? I suppose they are distracted by good food and things like that.

Yes the entire country is full of people who can be distracted with a well executed sugo. My husband and son can barely manage to get their heads around national issues given the scent of prosciutto wafting through the house.

Have you seen the mess the opposition is in ?

There is a clue for you right there why people either abstain, or hold their nose and vote.

SydSaid · 14/07/2011 08:15

I suspect the op isn't losing their job, although it is possible that they may have a friend that has, otherwise they would know that it isn't lack of readership that torpedoed the paper.

robingood19 · 14/07/2011 10:02

The Times seems to be in a weird position. Losing money like mad. But subsidised by |Murdoch. Because its the Times Rupert M could sell it for a fortune.

sausagesandmarmelade · 14/07/2011 10:13

Well this whole sordid mess isn't going to go away any time soon...

Apparently the Americans are now looking into things...something about a bribed policeman (approached for details of those killed in 9/11) and potential hackings over there...
The FBI were said to be investigating the above.

sausagesandmarmelade · 14/07/2011 10:15

*Slowly but surely the phone-hacking scandal is crossing the Atlantic - as members of Congress demand action on two fronts.

First, there's a call for the FBI to investigate whether journalists broke wiretap laws by targeting the phones of Americans.

It follows a report that the News of the World approached a New York police officer and attempted to buy the phone records of people who died on 9/11.

One congressman from New York said British reporters appeared to have engaged in "parasitic" behaviour.

The other call is for the Department of Justice and stock- market regulators to investigate reported payments to British police officers.

Potentially, that could expose News International's parent company, News Corporation, to charges under US anti-corruption laws.

With political pressure coming from Democrats and Republicans, a Justice Department spokeswoman said their requests for an investigation were "being reviewed."*

Maybe....the empire really is crumbling

deburca · 14/07/2011 12:39

just wanted to say that I too am glad to see NI being held to account. The Sun newspaper has often incited racial hatred in my opinion, I had a memorable occassion during my younger days when doing some promotional work for them (I didnt read the paper - still dont - so had no idea of the content of it)where I was handing out free copies outside a rugby ground in dublin, I had one guy come over to me and tell me that I was a traitor as did I not realise that The Sun had once said that all Irish were pigs and in fact apologised the next day to the pigs for saying it!

Dont know how true that is but have heard many similar stories since then. They are dangerous - thats my take on it.

Scholes34 · 14/07/2011 13:55

I've been boycotting Murdoch for years. It's not like we didn't know what kind of a manipulative person he is, or the kind of newspapers he produces.

RogerMelly · 14/07/2011 13:57

sky are really bad though. I moved house and now I have two accounts, one with 60 pound credit in and another 11 pound in debt and they have cut me off because of the 11 pound in debt (???????????????????????) i have made endless phonecalls and even though I am basically 49 in credit as the 60 pound in credit is my old, dormant account, they still do not understand and they keep me on the phone for ages and ages and ages and ages and ages until I lose the absolute will to live

Have no idea why anyone reads the sun newspaper though

RogerMelly · 14/07/2011 13:58

purely selfish post there Wink

TheRhubarb · 14/07/2011 14:05

Firstly: The NotW was running at a loss and would have probably been terminated sooner rather than later. The paper was closed down by News International rather than sack Rebekah Brooks. So an entire paper and staff were sacrificed for one woman and they know it.

Secondly: Murdoch will not simply pull out of the UK and do business elsewhere. News Corp are now being investigated by the US for phone hacking allegations of 9/11 victims and unlike here, he CAN be summoned to court to give evidence.

Thirdly: Boycotting a product may not, as you say, make much difference although it did affect the sale of The Sun in Liverpool and I'm sure there are lots of other examples I could give you where it has had a pronounced effect.

Lastly: Would you carry on buying cheap t-shirts if you knew they were produced by slave children? It's all about morals and ethics too you see, most people do not want to be associated with a product that has been tainted by corruption and scandal. How do you think the whole Fairtrade Industry came about? It caters for a need to be able to buy products with a clear conscience and it is now doing very well for itself.

I suggest you jog the feck on Rebekah darling.

onagar · 14/07/2011 14:21

I'm so angry at what they did you could nuke them for all I care. But you should not dismiss what the OP said if you are boycotting other companies that are not directly related. It's not just directors and journalists that lose their jobs and I don't know what kind of a financial settlement there'd be for someone who came in nights to clean the toilets.

Still I'm mostly in agreement that if an organisation does something evil you should boycott it. I suggested at least a token boycott when we found out what the catholic church was doing to children, but everyone piled in to say you can't do that as it wouldn't be fair on the other people who work there. Interesting to compare the difference in attitudes really.

takethisonehereforastart · 14/07/2011 15:41

It's probably been said, but NI shut down the NOTW before anyone had the chance to boycott it that weekend.

Many people feel that what went on at NOTW and perhaps other papers is wrong and they are showing their feelings in the only way that RM will listen to.

RM is not going to take the phone calls or read the letters and emails.

The only way to let him and his NI organisation know is to boycott his products, be they newspapers or TV companies.

It was advertisers, not boycotters that really hit him where it hurts when they pulled their adverts from the paper.

Many people do not read the NOTW and so it wouldn't matter to him if they continued not to buy it. But they want to show their disapproval and are doing so by boycotting the services of his that they did use.

I think the whole thing could be fixed if he stopped supporting people like Rebekah Brooks, who as editor should have known what was going on and take responsibility, at the very least, for being asleep at the helm. She's passing the buck and so is he.

Innocent people have lost their jobs, people who are either guilty or clueless are keeping theirs. That's the wrong way around. People want to say so.

And they want to make it very, very clear to RM and others like him that this is intolerable and unforgivable and that there are consequences to pay when the truth comes out.

It will be a very brave stupid journalist or editor who tries this again in the future.

Phone hacking: News International chief Brooks quits

Indaba · 15/07/2011 22:18

Dear OP and every one else who has responded on here............

(and I do note that MNHQ have been very active on this thread)

I don't care what your thoughts are re the hacking scandal....but what I am so overjoyed about is that many people are taking action.....its not party political as such but it so political to take a stance either way, and to thus to take action.....what ever your opinion

..so boycott if thats what you want....but to everyone here please take a stance one way or the other...make your voice heard.

Personally, I am worried re when any government or politician is fearful about taking on the press...I want any public person to be able to make their voice heard fairly......without distortion........we want freedom of discussion........

Here is to debate!

PaintedToenails · 15/07/2011 22:29

I've just seen Murdoch's 'apology' on the news....king of reminded me of

I'd love to boycott the lying crook, but sadly I've never had SKY, never read any of his rags fit for bog roll newspapers, never...err...had much input into the Dow Jones.....so I'll just have to settle for sending him evil thoughts!
