To want to start a campaign to do something about dog poo????

Yes, I know it's a topic that's been discussed on here before. But I am just so tired of having to clean dog poo off shoes, scooter wheels, etc.

I live in London and I feel like the whole place is covered with dog poo. When I go for a walk with DD I keep having to tell her not to walk on grass in case there is some dog poo hiding there (there usually is !).

In theory there are supposed to be £80 fines for dog owners not picking up dog poo, but I have never seen it being enforced.

I strongly believe that something should be done about this.

With all these things (pet poo, littering, spitting on the ground, and even vandalism) I have always wondered what goes through the minds of people who want to make the area that they live in look like crap.

Do people really want to live in an area with shit on the ground?
Ditto McD wrappers, phlegm, smashed up bus shelters, etc.

Is it something covered in PSHE/Citizenship lessons at school? (Look at these two pictures, where would you rather live? What can you do to make your area a nicer environment? etc etc)

I'm surprised at people objecting to horse poo. My granded and all the other older fellas in his street used to lurk like vultures when a pony came trotting down the street, shovels at the ready, prepared to sprint out and beat the others to some lovely, fresh fertiliser for their roses!

Tanif · 13/07/2011 12:14

*grandad, obviously.

MsChanandlerBong · 13/07/2011 12:26

Maybe I should publish my address on here so everyone can pass on my details to their gardener friends so they can come and clear the horse poo!!! (I think the local gardeners have had their fill... no lurkers around here waiting to scoop it up!)

FWIW I live in a terrace here, so if I wanted to use the horse shit in my garden I would have to take it through the house. I don't care how healthy/smell free you all think it is, it certainly is not compatible with my cream carpets Smile

Ormirian · 13/07/2011 12:29

May I put in a plea for a campaign against littering while we're at it. I took OrmDog out for a walk last week and forgot poo bags - but if the need arose I could have found a million alternative plastic bags to use, festooning the hedges and verges. It's pretty unpleasant too and not biodegrable!

Ormirian · 13/07/2011 12:31

"Firstly, I think it would be a good idea for dog owners to be required to do a short course when they get a dog "

How? How do you identify who is a new dog owner? Who would pay for and administer the course? No-one has jurisdiction over dog-ownership.

Ditto the fines! There are already fines in place but who is supposed to enforce it?

olderyetwider · 13/07/2011 12:36

Mrs ChanandlerBong, what on earth are you doing living in the country?

fruitshootsandheaves · 13/07/2011 12:37

And whilst we're on the subject..what about pigeon poo?
We have pigeon poos the size of a small omelet in our garden.
Can pigeons be litter trained or should I just teach my spaniel to fly?

MsChanandlerBong · 13/07/2011 12:42

olderyetwider I am busy plotting my return to the city, that is what I am doing whilst living in the country!!! Bloody recession, bloody property market making selling difficult, etc etc.

I actually grew up in the country (next door to a stables) so on some subliminal level I appear to be drawn to horse shitty areas. I didn't enjoy the dog poo in the city, but you can't deny that it is A LOT smaller in size Wink

olderyetwider · 13/07/2011 12:49

My mare ALWAYS poos in the same spot, right next to the spooky farm with terrifying things on it, so she's pooing and wanting to get away simultaneously. No way am I getting off, scooping poo into sack, and then trying to get back on! If I went back later to collect it later it would be nearly vanished (speaks from recent bitter experience of trying to collect poo samples for worm counts, driving round roads we've ridden on with little pots, trying to scoop correct poos into correct pots whilst trying not to look like a weird person)

Good luck with the escape plans MrsC!

MsChanandlerBong · 13/07/2011 13:36

Yep you're right olderyetwider, I'm not sure horse riders dismounting and filling bin bags is a workable solution. I think the only answer is for everyone to have goldfish instead Smile

ChristianSalvesen62 · 13/07/2011 14:12

Catgirl1976 - Sorry Sad It will wash away eventually

That's a non argument - dog pooh will also wash away 'eventually' Wink

And to those who say their cat only poohs in a litter tray - how on earth do they know? Do they follow the cat everytime it goes out? What utter rubbish!!

I always pick up ANY pooh that my dog does. I know there are people who do not (usually men in my experience), but for cat owners to moan about it is just hilarious!! Unless your cat is an indoor cat, you can't possibley complain.

And I love cats, but don't own one.

olderyetwider · 13/07/2011 14:16

But Mrs C, my saddle wouldn't fit a goldfish!

nokissymum · 13/07/2011 14:17

Can we please add CAT poo to this ? Ive just cleaned up another stinking collection from my garden curtesy of neighbours cat.

gramercy · 13/07/2011 14:19

just a thought... does a vegan person's poo smell?

spanky2 · 13/07/2011 14:23

I am forever telling my boys to watch where they're treading. Dog poo is the source of all evil as far as I'm concerned. Also I agree about the pigeon poo. Last week I saw whole cherry stones in some. Ouch!

upsylazy · 13/07/2011 14:35

gramercy that's exactly what I was going to ask! I was a vegetarian for years and I don't remember my turds being any more fragrant. Not sure about vegans though.
