To want to start a campaign to do something about dog poo????

Yes, I know it's a topic that's been discussed on here before. But I am just so tired of having to clean dog poo off shoes, scooter wheels, etc.

I live in London and I feel like the whole place is covered with dog poo. When I go for a walk with DD I keep having to tell her not to walk on grass in case there is some dog poo hiding there (there usually is !).

In theory there are supposed to be £80 fines for dog owners not picking up dog poo, but I have never seen it being enforced.

I strongly believe that something should be done about this.

YANBU

And can someone please explain to dog owners that just because their dog has runny poo does NOT mean they don't have to pick it up. It means they should carry tissues to WIPE it up. It is truly disgusting when I have to avoid a trail of doggy diarrhoea all the way down the street.

usualsuspect · 12/07/2011 20:00

The smell of muck spreading makes me heave

catgirl1976 · 12/07/2011 20:02

But thats not horse poo. Thats the well composted poo of cows / pigs. Not the lovely ponies :)

sprinkles77 · 12/07/2011 20:05

MsC, a nice well formed horse ball is fine to pick up with your hands. You know the ones catgirl, kind of like large conkers....I'm not getting the fork out for that! I do understand not really liking the spray from it on your car though!

catgirl1976 · 12/07/2011 20:05

Exactly sprinkles! Wastes less bedding too just picking the thing up and chucking it the barrow :)

MsChanandlerBong · 12/07/2011 21:41

Well I guess the issue is that the horsey people near us don't pick it up or fork it up... it is left on the road and pavement. I'm not sure there is a solution but it does give me something to rant about, which I enjoy Smile

When I was a 'city dweller' some kind soul allowed their dog to crap right outside my front door (I lived in a terrace that opened straight onto the pavement). My proposed plan was to set up CCTV to monitor who was pooing where, so that I could then follow them home and put said poo through their letter box. Do you think that method could be used in conjunction with the poo microchipping to help eradicate the problem once and for all??

I work in peoples gardens everyday. I'm very well aquainted with dog shit. And I wish people would clear it up. Because I have too, and it isn't my dog.
I can deal with that because it's their garden; but I really have a problem with dogs shitting all over my allotment Angry Angry I had to fence my patch off! And they still crap on all the pathways and connecting bits!

Jackin · 12/07/2011 21:57

Oh and horse poo is good. for my allotment Grin

catgirl1976 · 12/07/2011 22:43

Oh I dont pick it up off the street - just out of the stables or paddocks. Sorry :( It will wash away eventually or a nice gardener type like Jackin might take it for thier allotment!

Coolsticks · 12/07/2011 22:50

Can I complain about spitting- phlegm or otherwise? Really disgusting behaviour, forever dodging it on the pavement. Do it in a tissue or in the drain! ABU aren't IGrin? Am 5 months preggie & have always had an issue with it!

catgirl1976 · 12/07/2011 22:51

Agree - that is vile coolsticks

OriginalPoster · 12/07/2011 22:53

I think there is a lot less than in the 70s 80s, though. I don't think anyone picked it up (it was often white, back then, for some reason). I thing the majority pick it up now.

I once took chalk and drew rings round all the shits on our street and wrote 'selfish dog owner' beside it. People do walk the same routes so I think they will have seen it. Grin

I detested dog shit until I got my dpuppy, but it's like your own dcs shit, it doesn't smell as bad as other people's.

Daydreaming · 12/07/2011 22:55

Glad so many of you agree.
In answer to what should be done, I think lots...
Firstly, I think it would be a good idea for dog owners to be required to do a short course when they get a dog - this could cover issues such as dealing with dog poo, etc.
Also, dog owners who offend should actually be fined. I read an article ages ago about switzerland where they don't have this problem - because it is enforced and the fines are high.

ooh - apparantly the white dog poo was to do with changes to dog food and it having less calcium now. Maybe was mainly ground up bones before or something. Don't know why I know that Hmm

bubblesincoffee · 12/07/2011 23:10

I'm well up for the dog poo campaign, I have a dog and icking u poo is really not that hard, but I cannot believe that this has just been posted by a cat owner!

If people can't be arsed to clean up after their dogs, they shouldn't bloody have one. It's incredibly rude and inconsiderate to let their choice of pet inconvenience and even endanger others.

Even if you deal with your cats poo, it still inconveniences people. Unless it is never allowed out. Some of us are inconvenienced just be having to try and be ready with a bottle of squirty water every time someone elses pet is allowed to enter our gardens.

Good dog owners (the ones that pick up poo) affect nobody.
Good cat owners still affect people that don't like cats and don't want them in their garden.
Good Horse owners still make other people have to see and smell their pet's poo - not everyone finds it inoffensive. It does smell. I'd rather see a little bit of dog poo than a huge sploge of horse poo any day.

Point is, selfish pet owners are selfish pet owners, but it is possible to keep a dog and bother noone. Same cant be said of other pets that are allowed out of the house.

NestaFiesta · 12/07/2011 23:26

Bubbles- that was me who said that! Our cat barely wanders more than ten yards into our own garden and comes IN to have a poo. I don't know how I can be more considerate about owning a cat without attaching leg irons to her.

Do you want cat owners to stop owning cats or keep them indoors? Dog owners inconvenience people with their barking and howling (my next door neighbour) but I defend his right to have dogs.

My poor elderly shy cat is very hurt by your cattist remarks!

LithaR · 12/07/2011 23:45

My dad loves it when a horse poos on his street, its free manure for his plants lol.

As for dog poo, round here someone has started spraying white markings on the floor telling people to pick it up.

Birdsgottafly · 13/07/2011 00:09

I think if you are going to put wardens out to fine dog owners then why not all littering.

I have always had dogs, always will, i don't like dog muck any more than a non dog owner, but if you worm your dog it isn't as dangerous as broken glass or even the threat of infection spreading from people spitting, although i agree everyone should clean up after their dogs. Were i walk my dogs mainly it is full of fox and rabbit poo, which is a health hazzard.

I am sick of my local park being full of litter especially over summer when families use it. The same applies to beaches, i often see families leave still hot barbecues and the rest of their rubbish behind them. Yet there are supposed to be penalties for littering but they are never imposed.

The cities that were named as not having the dog poo problem are very clean generally, you don't see adults dropping fast food wrappers on the floor within walking distance of bins, as you do in the UK.

Cutelittlecatlover · 13/07/2011 00:26

Yanbu, I have to dodge piles of dog shit in my street everyday, it drives me crazy!

Yesterday I saw someone had drawn a circle around a turd with chalk and written "why don't you pick this up" next to it - went out this morning and the poo had gone! Grin

ninedragons · 13/07/2011 01:57

I think the fine should be closer to a grand, and if you can't afford to pay it, you lose your dog. Revenue raised would pay for wardens, as parking fines do.

Bast · 13/07/2011 02:06

I would (and have) happily picked equine shit up with my bare hands.

Dog shit is vile by comparison.

However, I'd rather dance in dog shit than see in any fkrs phlegm, let alone make contact with it.

Empusa · 13/07/2011 02:09

I do agree, as a responsible dog owner. Just as long as you promise me you'd never go up to someone while they are picking up dog poo and say, "I hope you are going to pick that up!" As it just causes confusion.

That was a bloody weird day.

Bast · 13/07/2011 02:37

"Well I was going to, unless you want it for yourself"?

Empusa · 13/07/2011 03:44

Haha, oh if only I'd thought of that!

Jackin · 13/07/2011 06:27

Littering of any sort is nasty, I think that mc d's and other retailers should have litter picking patrols for their rubbish. and I agree that they should enforce the fines. Dog poo attendent!
