AIBU to think eating chips in a shop is uncouth?

Twice in a week now I have seen people eating bags of chips whilst walking round a supermarket and a charity shop. I love chips as much as the next person but I just think it's horrible to eat greasy food whilst in a shop. I mean, can't they wait? AND I saw a woman eating a pasty whilst she shopped for stationery. Yuk. AIBU?

Whats wrong with eating in the street?

DoNotTakeMeSiriusly · 07/07/2011 16:59

Mmm yes the best chips I have ever had was on the seafront at South Shields, salty windy sea air , loads of vinegar and a little wooden fork thing. Yum.

PinotsKittens · 07/07/2011 16:59

Cornish pasties also taste better on the beach, eaten from paper bags

And when in New York, you are allowed to wolf down a giant pretzel from the street carrts. Mmmmm.

But apart from them, yes no others allowed.

TheFlyingOnion · 07/07/2011 17:00

well I was brought up with a father who went mental if we were seen doing anything as uncouth as eating in the street...

but apart from that, I just think it looks nasty, greedy, yes uncouth, and also can't be good for your health. Indigestion anyone?

PinotsKittens · 07/07/2011 17:00

carrts? fool.

michglas · 07/07/2011 17:02

"UNCOUTH" - last time i heard that word was out of my mothers mouth some 17 years ago, such a horrible word

PinotsKittens · 07/07/2011 17:05

I like it - I use it (with a withering gaze) when DH burps/grunts/etc. Satisfying.

fuckmepinkandCALLmegoran · 07/07/2011 17:05

When I was at school (a million years ago) we were not allowed to eat chips if we were out in town in our uniforms. We would be hauled in front of the head. Ditto if we were seen misbehaving in any way in our uniforms (my friend got suspended for telling her mother to bog off - and it was bog not fuck - in the supermarket because she was in her uniform and our maths teacher heard her)

TheFlyingOnion · 07/07/2011 17:07

agreed, the word has such snotty implications, but some things just are uncouth!!

PinotsKittens · 07/07/2011 17:09

See also spitting in the street. Vair uncouth!

TheFlyingOnion · 07/07/2011 17:12

umm I'd go further actually and say spitting on the street is revolting...

PinotsKittens · 07/07/2011 17:17

Yeah, tis. Makes me when I see it.

catgirl1976 · 07/07/2011 17:32

YANBU - It uncouth. You can only eat out doors if sitting down. Preferably on a naice picnic rug. And yes - chips best on a beach definately. Now I want chips.

Asinine · 07/07/2011 17:40

There is a Newsagents near us, by the seaside,

which does the best chips ever, made with local potatoes, big enough pack to feed 2 adults for £1, with salt and vinegar...

They don't mind if you eat them in the shop or outside...

stillfrazzled · 07/07/2011 17:42

I was in a phone shop yesterday trying to organise a new phone, and there were two lads in there scoffing massive meals from McDonalds.

The one actually doing business with the store had to keep moving bags of chips and burgers and his milkshake etc so the assistant could get to the computer. It was grim.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 07/07/2011 17:44

I eat whilst driving. Is that allowed?

usualsuspect · 07/07/2011 17:56

I eat in the street and don't really care what anyone else thinks

HeidiKat · 07/07/2011 18:08

Eating outside in the street is fine, eating in shops is not. Pity the poor shop worker (used to be me) who has to pick up all the half chewed food that has been thrown out of buggies by kids that were given it to shut them up while their mums shop. Half chewed tuna sandwich is rank.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 07/07/2011 18:12

HeidiKat - but said children could have thrown the tuna sandwich on the street. Someone else's job?

catgirl1976 · 07/07/2011 18:20

actually cristina - thats so not allowed its techincally illegal

CristinaTheAstonishing · 07/07/2011 18:22

Catgirl - What's not allowed? Eating whilst driving? What if I have tinted windows and no MN-er can see me?

catgirl1976 · 07/07/2011 18:23

:) no my sister got pulled over for eating whilst driving - apparantly its diriving without due care and attention........but if you;ve got tinted windows much away!

I still want some chips :(

catgirl1976 · 07/07/2011 18:23

*driving

CristinaTheAstonishing · 07/07/2011 18:24

No tinted windows :) What if I smoke? A very, very quick drag.

catgirl1976 · 07/07/2011 18:25

thats a lynching offence on MN isn't it?
