to not use bath products MIL has brought for the new baby?

It sounds a bit daft but please hear me out!

MIL-to-be has popped over today with bags of stuff for our new arrival, due at Christmas.

Its my 2nd DC, and I've decided to get on my high horse about bath products, especially those with SLS in. MIL has brought talc, baby wash, barrier cream, and 4 packs of wipes. I'm really touched by her gesture, she's obviously very excited about her new DGC! However, Ive looked the ingredients up, and the wash does contain SLS, and of course theres the advice against talc. DP knew I wanted to get natural stuff for DC, and he's obviously passed the message on because this particular brand (pretty common, but not the 'leading' brand) has on the front
"No harsh ingredients"

I really don't want to use it. DP does because his mum bought it. He seems quite offended that I've looked up the ingredients. I just want whats best for the baby, I dont want to offend anyone!

Its body wash ffs, not some keepsake we will keep for generations! I know when he baths baby he will use it. He will also keep tabs on it to make sure it doesn't get 'lost'.

I don't understand the issues surrounding products for babies? What is the problem with Johnsons products et al at the moment? How come you shouldn't use talc on a baby? (I ask as I have a niece/nephew on the way)

NoHunIntended · 07/07/2011 16:17

petisa, toothpastes: www.jasonnaturalcare.co.uk/dental-c7.aspx or www.aloedent.co.uk/.

Toiletries, again, JASON, or www.b-organic.co.uk/. Sainsburys/Boots used to do a range called Naked, but I haven't seen it in a while.

NoHunIntended · 07/07/2011 16:20

We use reusable wipes - they are brilliant. I have never used a wetwipe from a packet.

fbw, I put a link higher up re the problem with Johnsons (etc) products. And the talc thing.

mousymouse · 07/07/2011 16:20

yanbu to not want to use it on baby
yabu to fall out over it with your MIL

I would (and did) use the given baby stuff on myself and buy the weleda baby bath stuff myself.

Insomnia11 · 07/07/2011 16:21

I was told not to use anything on newborns except olive oil, so YANBU. Can't believe people here seem to be advocating using baby wash, talc and so on, totally unnecessary.

Any unwanted toiletries sets I give straight to the charity shop as there are only certain ones I'd actually want to use on my skin.

petisa · 07/07/2011 16:23

fanjobanjowanjo, look at NoHunIntended's link above, passionatelycompassionate or something like that.

NoHunIntended, I'm confused about toothpaste and fluoride and have actually started a thread in chat, I don't know which I should use. Confused

petisa · 07/07/2011 16:23

Oops, sorry to hijack OP.

NoHunIntended · 07/07/2011 16:27

Will go an find it/you, petisa! :)

petisa · 07/07/2011 16:31

it's here Thanks! Smile I'd appreciate your views! Sorry again OP.

Argh bins all cosmetics and soaps

AllGoodNamesGone · 07/07/2011 16:42

My "babies" are teenagers now but, with DS1, I was told by the MW at parentcraft class not to shake talc onto him directly from the bottle as he could end up breathing it in and choking. It was all a long time ago but I am sure I heard that some babies had died because the lid fell off the talc bottle while it was being shaken onto them and they got a faceful of it. The MW said, if we wanted to use it, to shake a little bit onto a cotton wool ball and then apply to his bottom, which is what we did.

By the time DD arrived I had heard that talc can get up into little girls reproductive systems and that there may be a link with ovarian cancer, as someone said further up the thread, not proven, but I decided not to take the risk as talc isn't essential and there are other things that can be used for nappy rash.

KaraJS · 07/07/2011 16:43

The problem with talc is it can get in delicate areas and cause cysts, it is also closely linked to the carcinogen asbestos, as for the other stuff just say thankyou and put it in a cupboard she was obviously trying to help you and was excited about buying something , later down the line tell her you've used it and now you've moved on to another brand, just incase she ever buys anymore

IWillCountToThree · 07/07/2011 16:43

I use SLS free stuff on ds as he has very sensitive skin. I even had to request aveeno from the dr as everything else we tried made his ezcema worse. Since i've banned SLS he's beeen fine with only the very occasional flare up.

He's DC3 and i still have trouble getting Mil to understand she can't use what she uses on the girls on him.

Unfortunately he gets it from me! (poor Child!)

girlywhirly · 07/07/2011 16:44

If you really have to use the toiletries, why not use the baby wash as a hand wash, the wipes as quick clean-ups for the older child, and the barrier cream for applying to your hands when decorating or doing something that will stain your hands? But I still wouldn't use the talc.

The things will get used, and you won't have been ungrateful or wasted them. Unless MIL is present for every bath the baby has, she won't know how you are using the toiletries. As I said in my earlier post, give MIL details of the brands you prefer, to prevent her buying any more of the ones you don't. If you are diplomatic she shouldn't be offended. Surely there is no rule that the toiletries have to be used by the new baby.

Sorry about DP'S OCD. That must be really hard to cope with.

TobyLerone · 07/07/2011 16:46

You're being insane.

KaraJS · 07/07/2011 16:50

Although regarding my earlier post talc can't be that harmful or it would be banned! I don't use it because it doesn't allow the skin to breath, clogging pores etc, which is why it's so good for fungal infections

girlywhirly · 07/07/2011 17:02

But Kara, adult skin is a lot thicker and tougher than a newborns.

KaraJS · 07/07/2011 17:06

I ment I don't use it on the baby, I use any old thing on mine!

ImperialBlether · 07/07/2011 17:11

I have to say I was just like this when my children (now 22 and 19) were babies but now I can't for the life of me see why.

I've never used talc on babies and wouldn't now, but the rest... Johnson's baby products? They're OK aren't they?

I do think I went a bit insane when I had given birth - maybe this is what's happening here? ;)

naturalbaby · 07/07/2011 17:16

what brand are they madyoungcatlady ? i was just like you when pregnant with my first but the stuff i really wanted to use is so expensive! I found a great website that i spent ages reading and working out what to use from -
www.tipslimited.co.uk

I'm a bit like your DP with OCD and spend ages in my cupboards sorting and organising.

OhdearNigel · 07/07/2011 17:40

YADNU. I have never used any products on K apart from shampoo once a week. We don't use wipes, baby bath or talc and we use cloth nappies. She never, ever gets nappy rash - I am still using the sample pot of sudocrem from my Bounty pack and she is 18 months old.

@ the lady who wondered how on earth you deal with poo without baby wipes, a wet flannel is infinitely more effective than a wet wipe. And babies did poo prior to the invention of wipes and no doubt their mothers managed to clear it up

centrecourt · 07/07/2011 17:41

YANBU. if you want to take the organic/natural approach, that's fine. just fib. don't, whatever you do, tell her!

MadYoungCatLady · 07/07/2011 18:14

girly - some days it can be tough, but we tend to make 'light' of most things really. I dont take the piss too much of course as I don't want to upset DP, but it is lovely knowing he'll always tidy up after himself! Wink

I am looking into various brands - I tend to use anything really, as long as it smells nice, so Ive not had any experience with natural ingredients. I've heard of a few, like Burts Bees, that I want to do some googling reseach about.

I promise I wont say a word to MiL - she's been so kind, love her!

Use the body wash and baby lotion yourself. Use the talc to get grease stains out of clothes before you wash them. Use the wipes to clean up with

DuelingFanjo · 07/07/2011 18:35

do what piprabbit said.
