To have not left my details on the windscreen?

Gah. Went to get some spuds from my local well known supermarket. Parked in a parent and child parking space. When I came out of the shop there was a car that had parked next to me but over the box on the ground so I might as well have been parked in an ordinary spot iyswim because I had barely enough room to get ds into his car seat.

Anyway, I'm trying to get him in when I bump my door and it scratches the other car on it's rear door. it left a noticeable mark about an inch square.

The car is a really high end, top of the range type thing. I googled and the prices start from around 50,000 quid Shock. I waited for about 15 mins but it was hot and ds was getting cranky so I left. Without leaving my details.

My rationale is this - the car was parked carelessly over the grid on the floor, impinging on my space. I don't want my premiums to go up if I am honest, we are skint enough.

Aibu (probably) I took the Reg number of the car so I could contact the dvla I suppose.

Unless they worked out they may have been seen on camera....

AnyFuleKno · 04/07/2011 17:37

Got to be honest, I probably wouldn't have left details.

It's just a car, these things happen.

M0naLisa · 04/07/2011 17:45

I probably ewouldnt ahve left details either if they cant park a big car like that in a C&P then tough shit.

sybilvimes · 04/07/2011 17:50

Honestly, this has happened to me a few times. I have come out of a supermarket and found a ding, or scrape on the car door.

No one has ever left me their details and I doubt hardly anyone does.

Its one of those annoying things about car parks that you just learn to live with isn't it?

AnyFuleKno · 04/07/2011 17:54

Exactly Sybil. Unless you coat your car in Vaseline, it's going to pick up dings and scratches. A piece of loose gravel here, the wind blowing someones car door into yours etc. It's part of the reason I would never have an extravagant car.

RevoltingPeasant · 04/07/2011 17:56

OP good for you for going back.

DP has a nice car - nothing too swish, but a very solid family-type Japanese car which would cost around £20k new. He actually got it third-hand from a family member who kept it in good nick for £1500. This was about as much as he could afford to pay.

This weekend, some twat drove past and bumped the back end AND knocked the driver's side wing mirror off. It will cost a few hundred quid to repair. That is our weekend break this summer gone Sad He does not want to claim on insurance because he only passed his test last year, already has sky-high ins just for being a new male driver, and cannot afford not to have a no-claims bonus next year.

Just because someone has a nice car, doesn't mean they're rolling in it. You did the right thing...

SirGinster · 04/07/2011 17:57

Anyone who damages someone else's car in a car park and drives off without leaving details, irrespective of what car it is, is a arse in my opinion.

AnyFuleKno · 04/07/2011 18:00

A crash is different fom a ding though. Its a sliding scale of magnitude, or something.

I wouldn't leave a note if I brushed someone car with my bag, but I would if I crumpled a wing.

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 04/07/2011 19:12

You are bloody out of order .... You damaged their car. Doesn't matter how much it was worth. Maybe that car is their only luxury in life. You should have left your details. I hope the supermarket has your details on CCTV and the police come knocking. Sorry but people like you take the piss. Ok, they parked badly but that doesn't warrant damaging their car. You should have left a stroppy note on their car windscreen, not a gash in the side.

WiiUnfit · 04/07/2011 19:19

My local area must be full of twats then Mayor, our car has countless scratches, scrapes & dents where idiots have parked next to us, bumped our car & never left details! :( I wouldn't mind if DP parked badly but he actually winds me up with his systematic straightening up! Grin

OP, you did the right thing in going back, but I fear most would not have.

maighdlin · 04/07/2011 19:21

when posing in AIBU think of it from otherside.

AIBU to call the police because someone scratched the door of my car and left it?

im glad you went back. it sucks, but shit happens. no matter how much it angers me inconsiderate parking does not mean they should have to pay for YOUR accident. I feel like writing park properly with lipstick on windscreens sometimes but i just have to believe that one day karma will get them. karma gets everyone.

TrinIsASadSpottyFatRhino · 04/07/2011 19:24

I'm quite reassured and surprised that so many on this threadd are saying you should have lefty yuour details
I fewel sad that nowadays me and my very close seem to be the only people left who do the decent thing

I would have left my details but I'm well aware that people dont think twice about just driving away cause we have had our car dented/dscratched twice and noone left details

worraliberty · 04/07/2011 19:27

She only went to get some spuds...I still can't see why she didn't use the other door? Confused

unfitmother · 04/07/2011 19:41

I'd only bother if it was a proper dint.
Marks and scratches are par for the course.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 04/07/2011 19:44

unfit, I read that as Marks and spencers are par for the course...

squeakytoy · 04/07/2011 19:46

She only went to get some spuds...I still can't see why she didn't use the other door?

I cant see why the lazy mare didnt walk.. by the time she had faffed about with strapping child into car she could have been there...

Also not sure what revelance it is that this is a "well known" supermarket either...

VivaLeBeaver · 04/07/2011 19:51

Don't believe for a minute that you went back and their car was still there. Noone takes that long doing their shopping.

YABU, someone scraped my well parked car in Sainsburys a few months ago and it cost £150 for me to fix it. I'm so angry that I've had to pay. 5 years ago someone completly mangled a wing of my parked car and again drove off without leaving details. Total scum. Have some honour and own up to your mistakes.

cheesesarnie · 04/07/2011 19:52

yabu.just because i hate parent and child parking spaces.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 04/07/2011 19:58

I only hate P&C parking spaces if there's none available!

AnyFuleKno · 04/07/2011 20:18

Viva but you're talking about a crash rather than a ding as well

Can't everyone see why it's different?

I couldn't afford to have a panel of someones fancy car resprayed because of a tiny scratch. It's a risk of leaving it in a public car park.

moomaa · 04/07/2011 20:47

I am shocked at all these people telling you off for leaving OP. It doesn't reflect my real life experience.

I have scrapped cars twice in car parks (makes it sound worse than it was) but once I waited and once I left a note. When I waited the couple just said 'oh well, got enough scrapes anyway', jumped in and drove off. The second, the man called and was amazed I had left details and said he could fix it himself. I had been worried someone would take advantage and claim I had caused more damage than I had but the opposite was true.

This made me canvas my friends, all pretty normal folks and the vast majority would have driven off and would expect to see scrapes left on their car.

The other thing that shocks me on this thread is the amount of people that would get a small dink or scrape repaired. Now I know why my car looks so bad compared to everyone elses, I never get them repaired, just use some paint stuff to stop weather getting in if it is bad enough. Are other people made of money???

VivaLeBeaver · 04/07/2011 20:51

It wasn't a crash. Car was parked in a close and another car tried to reverse park in and hit mine.

I'm sorry but if you can't afford to respray someone else's panel of a car when you've hit them then you should not be driving.

People with the attitude of oh well it's a risk of parking your car are complete scum of the earth.

VivaLeBeaver · 04/07/2011 20:54

The little scratch I had on my car cost over one hundred pounds for me to fix. I couldn't afford it either, but it started to rust and I had to find the money but it was a real struggle. Why the hell should I have had to pay that.

AnyFuleKno · 04/07/2011 20:54

Haha good one.

You're joking of course

VivaLeBeaver · 04/07/2011 20:55

Who's joking? I'm deadly serious. I think your attitude is appalling.
