to think lots of people have ridden a horse before?

I know this is random! For some reason DH and I were talking about horse riding ealier and he announced his mum has ridden a horse in a way which implied I should be amazed and impressed. I made some comment about surely lots of people have done this and it wasn't unusual at all, a argument discussion ensued and we both had a stand off as to who is right. So - who is right? Am I being very middle class and showing my country-ish upbringing by assuming it's normal that people would have been on a horse or is he right ? He is convinced he'll win this Hmm

I rode when I was younger but not for the past 20 years

Neither of my children, my DC, my parents. my DB or his children have been on a horse.

That includes Donkeys

griphook · 01/07/2011 22:16

have ridden a horse, it's so boring really don't get the attraction, and like you also thought everyone had ridden a horse

Never been on one

schroeder · 01/07/2011 22:21

I've ridden a few times in my youth.
dh never has though

QueeferSutherland · 01/07/2011 22:22

I can't think of any close friends or family who haven't ridden.

weimy · 01/07/2011 22:34

I started learning in my thirties but up till then never sat on one.

LaWeasel · 01/07/2011 22:39

Everyone I knew growing up had at absolute minimum been led around on a walking horse.

I did grow up in obsessive horse land though, it is not a class thing there, it is almost everyone's livelihood.

I don't know about here, I've yet to see a horse. It's oddly novel.

DH says he never has.

xstitch · 01/07/2011 22:41

I have ridden a horse, so has my mum and my dd.

misty0 · 01/07/2011 22:48

Yep, ridden lots. So has 3DCs. My Nan grew up in Fulham, London, terraced house, and they had their horses living in the back garden. Had to bring them through the HOUSE to put on the cart! Not that unusual back then apparently Hmm

DarftApeth · 01/07/2011 22:49

Yes, all my extended family have, I think.

reastie · 02/07/2011 06:52

I did a lot in my teens but I don't think DH has done apart from being led around on a pony when little. I would like both of our DC to ride a bit as it's a good way to learn respect for animals.

ohnelly · 02/07/2011 07:17

Yes I'm a horse riding instructor, and mosr people I know have at least sat on a horse once

ohnelly · 02/07/2011 07:17

Most!

MrsKravitz · 02/07/2011 07:18

No. I fucking hate the things.
And around here its certainly NOT middle class. Quite the opposite.

MrsKravitz · 02/07/2011 07:19

And we own some stables

PaleHandsILoved · 02/07/2011 07:20

As far ask I know I don't know anyone who hasn't ridden a horse! In fact, I know for a fact that most of my female friends have because we went riding on my hen do! Growing up, I had a pony as did loads of friends. I think it must be much more unusual not to have ridden a horse at least once than to have done so.

MrsKravitz · 02/07/2011 07:23

None of my siblings or friends have but my husband's side has

bellavita · 02/07/2011 07:25

My niece has a horse.

I have ridden horses.

kickingking · 02/07/2011 07:26

Bless him!

I think most people have 'had a go' on a horse, it's the sort of thing you do on school trips/ at Cubs/youth groups, etc.

Isn't it??

Meglet · 02/07/2011 07:27

I had a few horse riding sessions on activity holidays as a kid. They have horse riding days down in the New Forest so I have plans to do that one day.

My parents couldn't afford to send me horse riding on a regular basis though . It was a special treat.

FWIW while we're on the subject of sheltered DP's, my XP thought it was weird I know names for most common flowers. He though I was a right country bumpkin when I knew what lavendar was Hmm.

purepurple · 02/07/2011 07:36

I have never ridden a horse, but have been on a donkey. Does that count?
