I was getting bored with their dominance.

I'm thrilled! Now if Sharapova would just do the decent thing and lose (a match or her voice, either works for me) we might get a decent final Grin

And for whoever said Andy Murray's a miserable arse - did you see his post match interview today? He was actually charming, and SMILED. Once I regained consciousness I was really pleased Wink

I've tried hard to like them down the years (DP is an American and inclined to dismiss any criticism of them as envy) but on balance I don't warm to them all that much - though I find Venus the more attractive personality of the two.

So to be as fair to DP's point of view as I can....I do think they are/were a phenomenon and I do think there is a lot to admire in their grit and tenacity. Their records are very impressive and they overcame a lot to get there. And although I'm quite a novice to the US, I get the impression that it is much more ok to shout about your successes over here than it is in the UK, so there could be a cross-cultural thing going on. They also both seemed to value Wimbledon - it mattered to them, they did not just assume it was "theirs" - they made an effort. So I liked that about them.

It may be a moment where a new era is emerging and it's the changing of the guard - and that's usually quite exciting. But if I really really liked them, I'd feel the same way I did when Steffi Graff came to the end of her career - ie a bit sad. I loved Steffi's tennis, she had an amazing record too and seemed to keep her feet firmly on the ground.

I think the Williams sisters will be remembered and that's only fair given their achievements but I don't think they'll be remembered as fondly as Steffi or Martina in the era before her. And in my heart of hearts even though I won't remember them terribly fondly, I'm not sure how fair that is.

Absolutely not true, creighton.

Navratilova didn't come from the home counties, and nor did Amalie Mauresmo, yet I always cheered them on.

I find the Williams sisters' obnoxious, their outfits are ridiculous and, more to the point, their games are boring - they've put me off women's tennis for years.

Agree completely tazmin - I'm hoping Murray will go out in his next game.

sausagesandmarmelade · 27/06/2011 21:10

If they were nice white girls from the Home Counties none of you would ever tire of them.

Now THAT is the stupidest comment ever....
Why make it a race issue. Such a cheap shot!

Omigawd · 27/06/2011 21:15

Who cares - I prefer watching the men's.... tennis :o

sausagesandmarmelade · 27/06/2011 21:16

Is Andy Murray anything like Tim Henman.....

He was boring too....but hyped up just because he was British!

Used to watch Wimbledon a lot...until it got boring...actu found Stefi Graff boring too...

I like the players to have a bit of charisma, personality, spirit....not just thwack the ball to and fro.

I also prefer men's tennis.

Nancy66 · 27/06/2011 21:36

Murray is a more exciting player than Henman.

Pete Sampras was a brilliant player but dull as shite to watch....

sausagesandmarmelade · 27/06/2011 21:42

Oh yes...Pistol Pete....I think I stopped watching seriously after he started to dominate the game.

It was all about rocket serves...and less about personalities (which make a game really interesting).

Now Andre Agassi was a man to watch.....and Connors, Borg, Becker...nasty Nastase

Didn't like Mcenroe...with his temper tantrums

lifeisa4letterword · 27/06/2011 21:45

Not that keen on the W's; but I would willingly have them back in to get the dour, dreary, charmless Murray brat out...

sausagesandmarmelade · 27/06/2011 21:49

I get the picture nre Murray...wilol maybe catch a game (if he's still around) so that I can see what he's like...

Tim was a sulker...took himself too seriously!

sausagesandmarmelade · 27/06/2011 21:50

apologies re the typo's.

I blame this new keyboard....I haven't touched a drop of alcohol (honest)

creighton · 27/06/2011 21:54

can someone tell me why my last 3 posts have not been accepted? No swear words, no racism, just genuine comment

trixymalixy · 27/06/2011 22:01

Because they were completely wide of the mark.

creighton · 27/06/2011 22:02

oh dear, I'm being boring and I am wearing ridiculous clothes. You will all be glad that I am out of the competition!

creighton · 27/06/2011 22:05

trixymalixy, as you did not see them, how do you know they were wide of the mark?

trixymalixy · 27/06/2011 22:07

Eh?

creighton · 27/06/2011 22:14

what to you mean 'Eh?'? How do you know that my posts were wide of the mark if they were not posted? You did not see the content so cannot judge whether they were relevant to the discussion or not.

I read posts here every day with ridiculous/scary/foulmouthed comments. They are clearly posted with no difficulty. Why were my posts, giving robust but polite opinions not deemed to be acceptable?

NonnoMum · 27/06/2011 22:16

I'm upset. I think they are both fabulous. Loved how they have brightened up the game. Love their power and grit. Loved how they have ALWAYS picked which tournaments they would enter (and not just trudge around on the circuit playing anything just for the cash). LOVED the beads and the outfits, especially as they didn't always get it right. Loved the sibling rivalry and the family watching in the players' box. Just loved them.

trixymalixy · 27/06/2011 22:17

There's no auto filter on posts on MN.

I thought you were referring to the reaction to your 3 earlier posts on this thread.

southofthethames · 27/06/2011 22:21

Of course YANBU, you can support whoever you like. As far as American female players go, I always preferred Lindsay Davenport to either Williams sister. And in fact, Maria Sharapova is virtually an American player in terms of training and upbringing, having been America since 7 and training in Bollettieri's Florida academy since 9!

WhatGoodIsThis · 27/06/2011 22:21

YABU. I LOVE the Williams sisters. Their story is so amazing, you just couldn't make it up.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 27/06/2011 22:22

Creighton - your pc/laptop must have swallowed your last three posts. There's no pre-posting moderation here.

Though I do think you went well over the line when you suggested people on this thread were racist.

creighton · 27/06/2011 22:27

if i write a nice benign message will it be posted?

MarioandLuigi · 27/06/2011 22:28

I am glad that Serena is back from her injury.

But I agree that they dominated and its nice to see someone else be able to get close to winning something.
