AIBU to think bread bins are totally pointless?

DP is obsessed with getting a bread bin. He swears it will keep bread fresher than just putting it in the cupboard and that it's more convenient than my tactic of freezing every bread product that enters our home. I don't see the point. Surely they just take up space in the kitchen and make no difference to the bread itself? We can't agree so I said I'd put it to the MN jury.

Breadbin: waste of money or kitchen essential?

Butter dish = pool of melty stuff at bottom , flies potentially landing all over it .

Gooseberrybushes · 27/06/2011 09:58

Getorf I don't have your taste but I do like your certainty. I think you are also the "once a year burn everything in the house you don't need" type, to which I aspire.

MistressFrankly · 27/06/2011 10:16

Would be totally pointless in my house as bread gets inhaled by xoh as soon as he gets in from work. Never known anyone who can eat so much toast. I buy little loaves and get it fresh every day as i fear he would suffer a carb od if i left too much out.

I hide the tortillas/soreen/fruit loaf yumminess where he wont look so a big box with bread on it would be counter productive Grin

You see nobody has ever challenged me before about my bread bin. I thought it was like a British kitchen law that you HAD to put bread in a bread bin.

Now I know better and the breadbin has been shifted OFF the work surface!

Yeah.

Wow Animation I had no idea this thread would be so empowering for people. Glad to be of service. Grin

Getorf, I also admire your devotion.

I'm coming in late here, bt dh has just reminded me of the most useful purpose of my aforementioned designer bread bin.

"where else would you stack the bills and open mail if you didn't have the bread bin to shove it all behind....?"

MoreBeta · 29/06/2011 22:02

I recently got told off quite firmly on MN for putting bread in the fridge.

Apparently the low temprature does something to the bread protein and makes it unpalatable. Freezing is OK though as it does not happen at sub zero temperature.

Bread bin is good for 24 - 48 hours.

fluffybutt · 29/06/2011 22:07

I keep my bread in the microwave, (that my DH insisted we needed and I refuse to use.)

Animation · 29/06/2011 22:25

PrincessJenga - I am more empowered now - and I owe it all to you! Smile

BTW in the US I never saw any bread bins...all bread seems to go in the fridge. But their bread has a different texture... seems more sugary - like cake. Confused

Pang · 29/06/2011 22:59

Breadbin definitely needed in my house. We have a clever dog that steals bread. But he can't open the bread bin.

Animation - some americans do use bread bins. Yes thesupermarket bread there is very sugary. Even the DCs thought it was too sweet.

Animation · 30/06/2011 06:50

I, I had the bread of my life, and I never felt this way before, I swear it's the truth - and I owe it all to you...

I want a 'like' button for the above three posts. Grin Grin

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 02/07/2011 19:53

Yes Lady but I would have to demand that such a button was crumpet shaped, at the least. Although at a push, a floury bap would suffice....

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 04/07/2011 12:37

Oh yes! Fabulous idea. MNHQ, can we have a 'crumpet' icon to indicate that we like someone's post?

Rubyx · 04/07/2011 12:49

Yes fridge is excellent, it tastes better and doesn't go mouldy as quick

TeaOneSugar · 04/07/2011 13:14

Mine's great, it's full of kit kats, breakaways, rocky bars ........

GoldenGreen · 04/07/2011 15:50

Bread is always forgotten about if it goes into the breadbin in our house, so inspired by this thread I have just moved all the biscuits into it instead. Those are never forgotten.

Animation · 04/07/2011 20:19

"so inspired by this thread I have just moved all the biscuits into it instead."

Way to go! Smile

bluebellewood · 05/07/2011 13:20

I heard an amusing anecdote on Womans Hour once, about an old lady who's cat lived in her bread bin.

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 05/07/2011 13:31

I should use mine for all the unwanted gold I have lying around the house. I'm so clumsy I keep tripping over the gold bullion propping open the kitchen door.

If only there was somewhere to sell all this gold, for cash?
