AIBU to think bread bins are totally pointless?

DP is obsessed with getting a bread bin. He swears it will keep bread fresher than just putting it in the cupboard and that it's more convenient than my tactic of freezing every bread product that enters our home. I don't see the point. Surely they just take up space in the kitchen and make no difference to the bread itself? We can't agree so I said I'd put it to the MN jury.

Breadbin: waste of money or kitchen essential?

Waste of money.

I just stick mine in the cupboard.

glassescase · 25/06/2011 22:09

I have a bread crock...full of plugs and wrapping paper and fairy lights and skipping ropes etc etc.
No bread though, that lives in a pull out basket with rolls and malt loaf and pitta bread and pain-au-chocolat.

LordOfTheFlies · 25/06/2011 22:12

Had a cream enamel bread bin, bread used to go mouldy as it got warm. Now houses my washing powder.

Cream enamel coffee jar on the other hand-yy- I can hear Dh making me coffee when he prises the lid off Smile

PrincessJenga · 25/06/2011 22:17

Wow - it seems we all have strong views on breadbins. Thanks for all the comments (not least because most of you agree with me!)

Now, what can I spend the money on that we would have wasted on a bread bin?

''I have a bread crock''

Read that as 'I have a bread cock'. Confused

BitOfFun · 25/06/2011 22:19

They are handy though. I don't want crumbs in my cupboards

TalkinPeace2 · 25/06/2011 22:20

I have a wooden bread bin - love it.
Bread out of the bread machine lasts an extra two days in it

BibiBlocksberg · 25/06/2011 22:23

Grin - sounds like we were dating the same breadbin obsessed man Bertie :)

The obstructive obsession was lobbed with an violent volley and a satisfied smile into the skip at the local tip this very afternoon.

Frankly, I feel cleansed :)

Mammonite · 25/06/2011 22:25

We have a breadbin out of habit. I can't think which cupboard we'd keep it in as we are short of space anyway but I don't expect it stays any fresher. It's breadmaker bread and stored in a plastic bag. I quite like the idea of having it in a larder or basket/pull-out TBH .

I think it is weird keeping it in the fridge. The true divide is between the chillers and non-chillers.

IHeartKingThistle · 25/06/2011 22:33

If I put bread in mine I forget we have bread and buy more and then it goes mouldy and then I find it weeks a couple of days later Blush

NorksAreMessy · 25/06/2011 22:35

Mmmmm glassescase maltloaf.........yummmmmmm.

Now enough of this, all you clever people over to onlywantsone's baby on a bike' thread please. I am playing by myself, and not in a good way

MumblingRagDoll · 25/06/2011 22:35

YABVU they DO kep bread fresh and frozen bread is shite. Good bread is majorly important and a slice of thawed out Hovis doesn't cut it.

2rebecca · 25/06/2011 22:35

Wouldn't want to be without my tupperware breadbin, it's about a third of the size of my freezer though (below fridge freezer rather than giant breadbin) and we make, buy and eat alot of bread, croissants etc.
It keeps it softer for longer

GoingLoopyLou · 25/06/2011 22:45

Bread in fridge? Tell me more. This may persuade me to get rid of my bread bin and free up space on worktop.

Doesn't it dry out?
Cold for sandwiches?
All bread products or just a loaf?
Are we talking warburtons type loaves or freshly baked from a bakery?

Thank you!

M0naLisa · 25/06/2011 22:51

i keep all bread products in the fridge.

stays fresh for longer doesnt go mouldy and lovely for toasting.

i only buy warburton type loaves.

UniS · 25/06/2011 22:53

I use a large lock and lock type plastic box to store bread in. Works fine except when I bake an over size loaf. My bread is too good to store in fridge, loses it flavour if too cold. Seldom stays uneaten long enough to go stale.

Mumswang · 25/06/2011 22:54

Arse I've just bought my first ever breadbin. Haven't even unwrapped it. Perhaps I shouldn't bother

nenevomito · 25/06/2011 22:55

I have a bread bin and it does keep my bread fresher. I find frozen bread is great for toast, but always has a drier texture when defrosted.

VirgoGrr · 25/06/2011 22:56

Wouldnt have bought one myself - used to keep bread in the cupboard (fridge in summer). MIL bought us one and its actually quite handy - frees up a lot of room in cupboard.

I'm a relatively clutter free surface person too.

Bread bin, sugar bowl + regularly used appliances. And thats it. Final.

Cutiecat · 25/06/2011 22:58

I have a nigella one bought for me by my MIL. I hate it. I used to use a large tupperware container and could see what was in there. Now I often find a few bits of pitta bread a the bottom of the bread bin that DH has chucked in there.

I think my MIl paid about £60 for it. How can I make it disappear tectfully?

nokissymum · 25/06/2011 22:59

I put bread in the freezer, and straight into toaster from frozen, keeps fresh and tastes lovely. Smile

NadiaWadia · 25/06/2011 23:01

Do you not find bread gets very dry if left in the fridge?

silentcatastrophe · 25/06/2011 23:06

We would have no bread if we did not have a breadbin. The bread would be eaten alive.

Taghain · 25/06/2011 23:20

we have a bread cRock which seems to keep bread fresher than leaving it in a plastic bag or in the firdg or on the counter. It's probably to do with the humidity or suchlike: anyway we've used it since we were married and that's a long time and it's a part of home. It may work because we usually buy fresh baker's bread without so many preservatives rather than white sliced.

GetOrf · 25/06/2011 23:23

DP bought me a breadbin once, expecting me to be pleased. It was pine, the size of a coffin with the legend B R E A D carved into the side.

I gave it to MIL. I am not having crap like that on the side. I can only just cope with the kettle cluttering up the worktosp (my scheme to have the kettle stored in the cupboard after use fell in deaf ears bastards).

I don't have tea, coffee, sugar jars either. Sugar stored in a kilner jar, coffee and tea in the packets they came in - in the cupboard.

I loathe stuff on my worktops. I like them to look clean and clinical.
