... To expect my DP to wash fruit

shelfy74 · 25/06/2011 19:11

Me, DP and DS1 sitting eating fresh cherries purchased cheap from fruit shop for our pudding. He had taken them out of plastic punnets and put them in a bowl when we got them yesterday. I see DS1 (aged 2.10) go to eat a mouldy one. DP goes "I had to chuck quite a few mouldy ones away when I unpacked them". He then admits he did not even rinse the rest. I am not happy, he says no big deal. AIBU?

You can cook fruitWink

MrsDaffodill · 25/06/2011 20:41

Yeah...... true..... I think it is wine o'clock and I need help to talk sense!

Bunbaker · 25/06/2011 20:43

I always wash fruit and veg. Fruit handlers aren't known for washing their hands after going to the toilet, also I don't want to ingest pesticides. I had a nasty bout of salmonella several years ago and now have a sensitive digestion as a result and eating unwashed fruit for me is a no-no. I grow lettuce, tomatoes, herbs and beans organically and like to remove the caterpillars and flies before I eat them.

I know we are supposed to eat a peck of dirt before we die, but I prefer to ingest my own germs rather than someone else's.

I never wash meat, why would anyone want to do that? It gets cooked doesn't it? Current guidelines recommend not washing meat, especially poultry because it can cause more problems.

begonyabampot · 25/06/2011 20:43

mostly wash fruit and veg but only rinse/wash it with water.

Does no one think about veg being in the soil and all kinds of beasties crawling over them and poohing etc. Same with fruit. Picking out apples and stuff - imagine all the grubby hands that have been picking them up and touching them along with all the other stuff that could be on them.

Thinking about it might start to do the dilute soap thing and rinse and I'm not usually OTT on sanitary things at all. But some grubby old dear who's been picking her nose or been to the loo touching the goods - might as well just lick her hand.

I wash fruit/veg/salad for DS (22 months) and me as I'm currently pregnant, but wouldn't otherwise, and I don't bother if it's being cooked. I've never heard of mince washing though.

CocktailQueen · 25/06/2011 20:45

Bleck. I always wash fruit, dh does not. Typical man! YANBU. esp if there are of ones in there too. Yeah, it's good to be exposed to dirt etc but not unnecessarily imo.

catgirl1976 · 25/06/2011 20:48

there was a whole thread about someones who's DH rinsed mince after cooking it

Bleeeurgh

Crossssssshairs · 25/06/2011 20:49

Wouldnt it get soggy?

Ormirian · 25/06/2011 20:51

So,fruit-washers - would you refrain from eating lovely glistening blackberries as you picked them? or strawberries ? My DC have happily stuffed lbs of underripe gooseberries straight from their grandparents garden. And peas.

WishIWasRimaHorton · 25/06/2011 20:54

but what good does it doing washing in cold water? surely if there are faeces from someone else's hands on the fruit or even dirt / grime / pesticides, a quick swill under the cold tap is going to do SFA. that is why i never bother washing fruit / veg. unless i can see the mud.

Bunbaker · 25/06/2011 20:56

"So,fruit-washers - would you refrain from eating lovely glistening blackberries as you picked them? or strawberries ?"

No, because I would be the only one who had touched them. I don't eat strawberries that often as I am not mad about them so the insecticide on the few I do eat wouldn't cause me a problem. I am picky about where I would pick blackberries from. I wouldn't pick them from the roadside as they would be covered in the crap that gets emitted from car exhausts

WishIWasRimaHorton · 25/06/2011 20:56

that said -YANBU to expect your DH to wash fruit if you have previously asked him to do it. if i knew someone had a 'thing' about fruit being washed, i would do it if i were giving fruit to them.

LorettaMasonPotts · 25/06/2011 20:57

Different when it comes from someone's garden, Orm - it's more likely to be organically grown and probably no-one's peed on it or handled it with mucky hands.

I'd look out for bird poo though Smile

Bunbaker · 25/06/2011 20:57

When I wash fruit and veg I only rinse them in clean water, I don't use anything else.

Crossssssshairs · 25/06/2011 20:59

"So,fruit-washers - would you refrain from eating lovely glistening blackberries as you picked them? or strawberries ?"

I would wash them first, each to their own and all that. :)

Ormirian · 25/06/2011 21:00

Soft fruit can be damaged by even cold water.

debka · 25/06/2011 21:07

I never washed or veg, but then I got toxoplasmosis whilst pg, which my dr said was almost certainly from salad I hadn't washed at all properly. That was homegrown salad though, I don't think they use proper soil to grow supermarket salad.

Vegasgirl · 25/06/2011 21:08

I always wash anything that I am going to eat raw. E coli, listeria etc can all be transmitted via fruit and vegetables. I think the most recent outbreak has been from bean sprouts.

DH always says he washes them but I suspect he doesn't. I get really hacked off if he doesn't wash them when he is preparing something I am going to eat as he knows how I feel- YANBU!

Crossssssshairs · 25/06/2011 21:08

''I don't think they use proper soil to grow supermarket salad.''

Fake soil?

WishIWasRimaHorton · 25/06/2011 21:10

can you wash e coli / listeria / toxoplasmosis causing bacteria off with cold water then?

debka · 25/06/2011 21:11

Well not fake so much but engineered so as it doesn't contain the same toxins that outside-in-the-garden soil does, and perhaps with extra stuff to make the plants grow better. Thos however is conjecture, don't know whether it's true or not!

Vegasgirl · 25/06/2011 21:13

I wondered that myself, but being a bit OCD BlushI checked the "official" advice and it appears so.

Crossssssshairs · 25/06/2011 21:13

I thought toxoplasmosis can be in all soil. (Im no soil expert)

Vegasgirl · 25/06/2011 21:15

It can be from the soil from cat poo but is is mainly from undercooked meat.

orienteerer · 25/06/2011 21:17

I never wash fruit or veg, I'm still hereGrin
