To not understand how anyone can stay on a low carb diet

Honestly they are so hard to maintain. I have just been on for 2 weeks and (apart from losing only 5 lb) found it incredibly hard. (mentally, physically and practically)

Oh yes and before anyone says its too soon to tell at 2 weeks, I once did it for 3 months and found it equally difficult. (lost a stone)

I guess it depends to what extremes you take it...

I find high protein, low carb diets work for me

MrsKravitz · 25/06/2011 10:13

I found it incredibly difficult

MrsKravitz · 25/06/2011 10:13

and slow

I find it fairly easy, rather than cutting out everything, the better way is to change to a healthier option. I have been on a low carb diet for nearly 3 months and have steadily lost nearly 2 stone now.

MrsKravitz · 25/06/2011 10:15

I have been producing ketones with hardly any loss.

I did the Atkins and eneded up in hospital with a twisted bowel. That HURT - wouldn't reccomend it. I did the Dukan diet and managed to stick to that for about 4 months and lost nearly 2 stone and I found that a lot healthier than the Atkins as it is low fat and you start bringing the carbs back after a while. Not convinced either is healthy but cutting out refined carbs and not eating carbs later in the day does seem to work for me. (When I can stick to it) :)

bamboobutton · 25/06/2011 10:16

yanbu

i did it for a couple of months years ago, it made me feel faint all the time and made my breath smell weird.

didn't lose any weight either

DrNortherner · 25/06/2011 10:17

I think it's utterly stupid. We NEED carbs as part of balanced diet. Cut them out and you might be skinny but you won't be healthy.

MrsKravitz · 25/06/2011 10:17

Any diet that makes you afraid to eat an apple is mad

OP posts:
jeckadeck · 25/06/2011 10:18

I totally agree. Managed it for about 10 days and felt physically ill and not just from hunger. Got mouth ulcers etc. I'm convinced its not healthy and will be shown in years to come to have been a dangerous fad.

Riveninside · 25/06/2011 10:19

Its a freaky diet and far as i am concerned, an unhealthy way to eat. Dd is on exteremly low carb, high fat diet for her epilepsy and its so dangerous we have to measure her ketones twice a day to avoid ketoacidosis and scan her kidneys every 3 months and test her blood every 6 months.
Thats enough to out you off!

squeakytoy · 25/06/2011 10:19

We dont need bad carbs though. The western diet contains far too much processed shite, white bread, cake, biscuits, potatoes... cut out the sugary carbs, swap white for wholegrain, and control the portion size as well as eat small regular meals rather than one or two large meals a day.

MrsKravitz · 25/06/2011 10:21

I previously ate no "bad" carbs anyway. (yes the occasional biscuit etc which is why I need to lose, but staples always wholegrain).
Sorry, small regular meals has been pronounced a myth.

I do find if you cut the refined carbs but keep the "good" ones you still lose weight. Trouble is those horrid refined carbs are often sooooo tasty :(

SootySweepandSue · 25/06/2011 10:22

I managed from January 4th to Easter this year. Lost 1.5 stone.

I can not for the life of me get back on it. Still have 1 stone to lose. Have tried 3x but cravings get better of me possibly cos I am a little bit low at the moment (spend most time with baby and most days the only conversation excluding DP is with shop assistants and the odd baby group).

My tip to stay on it is to eat more protein. It dissolves the hunger, so snack on cold meats and cheese. I always had a stock of sugar free jelly made in fridge too so I had something kind of sweet to eat if I got cravings. Drink if you are hungry also.

Yesterday I ate a whole pack of biscuits Hmm

Will start again Monday...

mosschops30 · 25/06/2011 10:23

I stick to the no carbs after 4pm which worksmuch better for me. I can still eat themthrough the day but not at dinner when i am unlikely to burn them off before bed.
Unless im working nights when i like a big bowl of wholemeal pasta Grin

The best way to lose weight, be healthy and stay that way is to eat sensibly and exercise, its simple, no fad needed. I eat well, 3 meals a day, fruit or nuts for snack, exercise 4-5 times a week and enjoy a chinese takeaway every saturday Grin

What are the "good" carbs?

MrsKravitz · 25/06/2011 10:24

I have been having scrambled eggs for breakfast (or a diet shake thing if Im sick of eggs), meat and salad for lunch ns fish and veges for evening meal (all low carb options). If Im hungry I have about 7 brazil nuts in the day.

I think cutting out 'bad' carbs is good. A couple of weeks ago I cut out pasta, rice & bread and have lost 6lbs. Cutting out all carbs must be very difficult I'd imagine.

MrsKravitz · 25/06/2011 10:26

I dont each much bread anyway. And hate potatoes.

OP posts:
squeakytoy · 25/06/2011 10:26

small regular meals is not a myth at all....

your body does not need to be stuffed full with one big meal, you just need enough to burn off, otherwise the excess gets stored... treat your body like a machine, not a dustbin and it will run properly..

catgirl1976 · 25/06/2011 10:26

Well by "good" carbs I meant veg, wholegrain - that sort of thing

MrsKravitz · 25/06/2011 10:27

squeaky there is no evidence to support the frequent meal theory. (proper evidence I mean)
