To ask how many times it rains before you rewash the clothes on the line

my nan says always rewash, but my mum says its okay but what if it has repeatedly rained i.e the last couple of days. Its only a duvet cover but when would you rewash?

Ha! So it's not just me who does this - mother and mother-in-law would have be believe I am a dirty slattern for leaving washing out in rain and/or overnight. . I too simply do the sniff test - and it always smells lovely for having been out in the rain for several days waiting for it to dry before bringing in.

HeadfirstForHalos · 24/06/2011 21:34

Water is natures softener. I don't rewash, it always smells fresher after a bit of rain :)

Meglet · 24/06/2011 21:36

Never.

I leave stuff out there for days.

bibbitybobbityhat · 24/06/2011 21:36

Jeez! I am so laid back about housewifely stuff as to be almost horizontal.

But it stands to reason: if wet clothes hang around on washing lines for days, then they will go musty.

Surely??

Get them in and re-wash them you slatterns!

neveradullmomentinparadise · 24/06/2011 21:37

Oh, and while we're on the subject, the best stain remover (when all else has failed) I have found is direct sunlight. It works like magic.

dementedma · 24/06/2011 21:38

never re-wash - living in Scotland the washing gets rained on regularly. Just leave it there until it eventually dries.

bellavita · 24/06/2011 21:40

I would never leave my washing out in the rain in the first place Grin

bibbitybobbityhat · 24/06/2011 21:40

Yes, direct sun is brilliant on whites.

But I hope you are drying all your coloured things inside out?

And your darkest clothes in the shade or inside?

usualsuspect · 24/06/2011 21:41

I have a towel on my line thats been there for about a week

BoosMaw · 24/06/2011 21:41

Rain water is perfectly soft water so is a good fabric conditioner, if you live in a hard water area that is, otherwise in soft water areas it's no better than tap water for leaving things soft.

Sometimes if I leave washing out too long it gets a sticky feel to it. It took me a little while to figure out this was pollen, there are loads of trees round here, some overhanging parts of my washing lines, so for that reason I can't leave stuff very long on the line, varies with time of year tho.

moonface73 · 24/06/2011 21:43

Never - though I have been known to rewash stuff that's been in the stupid ironing basket for so long that it has become too scrunched up to iron.

Lipstickgal · 24/06/2011 21:46

Oooh leave the buggars out there until they dry however long it takes. Mine never get smelly frankly.

MissVerinder · 24/06/2011 21:51

Rain isn't dirty until it hits the ground.

Amen.

HeadfirstForHalos · 24/06/2011 22:21

Nope, it has been known for me to leave washing out for several days (after getting caught out by the rain before the washing is dry several days on the trot) and it's never smelled!

COCKadoodledooo · 24/06/2011 22:37

I never rewash.

"if wet clothes hang around on washing lines for days, then they will go musty.

Surely??"

Well no, not unless you bring 'em in and put them away when they're still damp. They're still out there with plenty of fresh air.

begonyabampot · 24/06/2011 22:42

had this dilemma last week with a wash. In the end was out for about 2 days before it dried up. Thought it was perhaps a bit mingy but it was lovely and soft and no wrinkles so no ironing so no rewash!

Ceic · 24/06/2011 22:52

I leave my washing out in the rain. Where I live, it can get rained on several times in an afternoon and still be drier than when I put it out. Other times, the rain can be so heavy, it's wetter than the washing machine could make it.

I've never rewashed clothes that were rained on, only respun them. They seem fine.

I agree that rain makes a good fabric conditioner and I find it makes the laundry smell better than any conditioner out a bottle.

I also find that the lighter rain seems to make my laundry finish off drying quicker inside than on a dry day (but this is at the colder times of year).

've put washing out when there's snow on the ground. I wouldn't rewash after snow either.

brightidea · 24/06/2011 22:57

i have the whitest nappies atm.

been raining for days - with the odd bit of sun thrown in.

Chummybud1 · 24/06/2011 22:58

Never I live in the highlands and it rains all the bleedin time, my washing stays out till it dries, could be days, even months lol

FellatioNelson · 24/06/2011 23:06

It depends. I only rewash if everything has taken on that faint earthy smell.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 24/06/2011 23:14

What a strange thread. If it rains I bring the washing in and hang it indoors instead.

usualsuspect · 24/06/2011 23:15

Do you?

What if you are out when it rains?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 24/06/2011 23:15

I bring it in when I get home.

LetThereBeRock · 24/06/2011 23:20

Why would you leave it out overnight?Confused

If it's a light short shower then I'll leave it,otherwise I'll taken them in and throw them in the tumble dryer,or hang them up. Usually both depending on the item of clothing.
