I was shopping in Marks and Spencer and came across this glaring at me in the checkout queue.

First this is a horrible story but par for the course for the media, but 'Josie' is on the front page, inside were enormous pictures of this woman in her bikini. I don't know who she is but I don't want my kids reading shite like this or even seeing it in the supermarket. why the hell is it anyone's business how fat she is? Why does she deserve to have pictures of her in her bikini plastered all over the country?

It's a bad as the Lad's mag thing

ThisIsJustASagaNow · 21/06/2011 11:16

I had no idea who she was so I googled the name. She's from Big Brother it seems.

If it's something to do with vacuous sleb culture I just try to tune it out. It's pulp and if she's famous because of Big Brother she signed up for the whole pointless deal. Fat/thin/happy/sad and every pathetic bit of drivel in between - the lives of such people are fodder for the trashy supermarket rags they appear willingly in. It's seen as a 'career' nowadays Hmm.

M0naLisa · 21/06/2011 11:16

Doesnt bother me, makes me feel better about myself tbh. :|

Also she didnt look like that in BB she was like the before and after pic, she wasnt that big in BB.

I mean i aint big as some at the minute but i wont go swimming or wear a bikini cos im not happy with my body. Shes brave wearing that imo haha

mayorquimby · 21/06/2011 11:16

You're angry about that woman choosing to sell her story? She may be humiliating herself, but she's hardly being humiliated.

worraliberty · 21/06/2011 11:16

I don't see what the big deal is.

She's an attention seeker...a chancer who went on Big Brother for exposure and is milking the last few pennies from her five minutes of fame.

She's never been slim anyway..well not that I've ever seen so I'm sure she's perfectly happy to pick up the pay check for this.

TakeMeDrunkImHome · 21/06/2011 11:17

She knows exactly what she is doing. She went on Big Brother fgs. You can't pick and choose when you court the papers but either way it is almost certainly a PR stunt.

ruddynorah · 21/06/2011 11:18

She won big brother. She will be skinny by Christmas with a fitness dvd out. Her relationship with fellow contestant john James is over so her manager has obviously suggested going down the fat to skinny route for a few extra quid.

ConnorTraceptive · 21/06/2011 11:19

She need to learn how to hold a fork properly

Butterbur · 21/06/2011 11:21

She obviously doesn't feel humiliated by her body, or she wouldn't be out and about in a little bikini. And I see no reason why she should feel any shame. Perhaps you would prefer to see her in a burkhini? Or maybe you think she should stay indoors, and spare us the sight of her altogether?

This thread is just body facism in a different guise.

NormanTebbit · 21/06/2011 11:21

Wow

I assumed these were pap shots and the poor woman had been chowing down at Burger King for a few months or something.

I should get back to Radio 4 and Downton Abbey I think

OP posts:
MumblingRagDoll · 21/06/2011 11:23

lol....she wouldn't appear like that unless she wanted to be seen like that....they ARE pap shots...but people can choose how they are seen.

NormanTebbit · 21/06/2011 11:23

I think the body issue is control. If the shots were framed as 'I'm a size 20 and happy,; a la Beth whatsername then ok fine

But the story's context is that her size is a shameful thing. The shots are very unflattering.

So no I am not a body fascist. I just felt a bit sorry for her. My sympathy was misplaced, it seems.

OP posts:
worraliberty · 21/06/2011 11:24

But she's quoted on the front..therefore she's obviously spoken to the media about it.

If she was unhappy with her body, there's no way she'd wear a bikini unless she wanted to earn money out of the attention it brought.

MumblingRagDoll · 21/06/2011 11:26

There's less milage in "I'm big and happy" than in "My Fat Hell"

welshbyrd · 21/06/2011 12:21

Josie Gibson - is the winner of the last Big Brother - from watching her, she has a really low esteem towards her body, the media stunt has not helped her one bit

mdowdall · 21/06/2011 12:26

ffs op - that's put me right off my lunch

BulletWithAName · 21/06/2011 14:44

She's humiliated herself by wearing something that does not flatter her whatsoever. I'm half her size and would never wear a bikini like that in public!

aliceliddell · 21/06/2011 14:59

Soon, all girls will be born with 'For display purposes only' tattooed on their arses. Whether that individual woman wanted to be portrayed like that is neither here nor there imo, it's part of the wider thing that women's bodies are public property. Fat, thin, big, small there's always something to sell us to either look like or not whoever it is. All women in this society are meant to feel permanently self-conscious and that we need to be improved, there's always something wrong.

HazeltheMcWitch · 21/06/2011 15:06

Another voice to add to the melee saying she's sold her story, she assumingly knows what she's doing.

STAR mag is published by the same outfit as O mag, and who own Channel 5. She has a contract with them, she has done a raft of stories with both mags and her show runs on C5. She is now single (having split up with her BB chap); this is just the next chapter in her story.

For me, the crazy thing is 'why does this shite sell?'. Because it really does.

revolutionscoop · 21/06/2011 15:21

I've no idea who she is, and can well believe there's a fitness DVD in the pipeline, although it's also possible she's planning no such thing. Either way some of the responses on here are incredibly spiteful. Z lister or not she does not deserve to be called a desperate whore.

BunnyLebowski · 21/06/2011 15:47

Well if you read my post properly revolution you would see that I actually called her a famewhore rather than a whore. There's a difference.

BelleEnd · 21/06/2011 15:59

I see no reason why she shouldn't wear a bikini if she wants to. As someone said upthread, it's no more offensive than seeing an emaciated supermodel in a bikini on the beach. In fact, I think she's a lot prettier than a lot of better known slebs.

Riveninside · 21/06/2011 16:06

Who goes into a cafe or restuarant for lunch wearing a bikini? Everyone else in the pkace appeared to get dressed firs. Shock

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 21/06/2011 16:17

It does look like a set up. Especially the photo of her sat in her bikini eating her lunch. Most of us cover up to eat in restaurants don't we? Plus that bikini is a good 2 sizes too small with her bumcrack practically hanging out. Surely she could have bout bigger bottoms, it looks like she is trying to emphasise everything.

The yo yo dieting effect is showing on her body i think, she is only in her mid 20's and her legs look like my 50 yo mum after a life time of yo yo dieting she has ended up with cellulite everywhere.

I don't personally have a problem with it, and i am halfway though a weight loss journey so i know how difficult it can be as i have lost 4 stone, however my worry is that many impressionable girls are lured in by the "look at me, i was fat! Now after 10 mins a week on my dvd you can be a size zero!" stories that are always in these magazines and is never realistic. Everything is quick fix, lighter life, lose a stone in a week and sadly that is worse for your health than staying at a constant healthy weight. I have watched friends balloon to 22stone and back down to 13 stone, only to end the year back up in the 20's. The weight gain she has looks like the product of this. They end up depressed, over weight and unhealthy and it's a vicious circle when the next cure all, fix all dvd or method is marketed.

There should be something under the trades description act.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 21/06/2011 16:34

I actually quite like Josie, I was a big BB fan but am glad that it's finished.

I think it's actually good for celeb-obsessed girls/women to see this picture. It shows the fickleness of the public and the depths to which scummy 'journalists' plummet for a story. I'd be using this magazine picture to educate my children and persuade them not to be taken in by the lure of celebrity-without-talent and not buy this trash either.

As far as Josie is concerned, I think she'll be alright, she seems pretty down-to-earth and she has family around her. The size/shape of her thighs and stomach will be forgotten by tomorrow when the next sleazy picture is published. She has courted publicity, no doubt about it, but it's the people who read this stuff and buy these magazines who are to thank for the never-ending stream of tabloid crap.

OpinionatedPlusSprogs · 21/06/2011 16:34

I felt really sorry for her when I saw those pictures. Couldn't understand why an overweight celebrity would dress like that. I would't wear a bikini and I don't have to worry about the paparazzi (size 14) I'm thinking the fitness DVD explanation makes sense now.
