I did it for a while; with fairly serious joke stuff. It usually seems to be used frivolously.

like the current road conditions on the A322 between Bagshot and Bracknell

Tempting, but I think I'll give following you a miss, nannynick Wink

KristineKochanski · 20/06/2011 17:31

I love Twitter too. I love to write, and write a blog so I follow loads of other people with blogs and read them Smile
So basically I'm on there for ages reading and writing so I'm happy with it, get to do my two favourite things! Grin

nannynick · 20/06/2011 17:50

TobyLerone - I know it sounds really dull Grin but twitter can be very useful in a time of local crises. Local road closures is just one use.

Today on twitter I have had discussions with people about good baby changing bags, email distribution lists, and going to the gym. Could have done all those on mumsnet admittedly, though replies may have been different.

Meglet · 20/06/2011 17:56

yes. But only to follow interesting / funny slebs and politicians.

I prefer FB for interacting with people.

TobyLerone · 20/06/2011 20:48

Today on twitter I have had discussions with people about accidentally tucking my dress into my knickers after going for a wee, and buying a girl I know who is in a semi-successful band a pint of pissy cider.

TechLovingDad · 21/06/2011 08:26

See Toby, it's so educational! Grin

glammapuss · 21/06/2011 08:34

It's brilliant for businesses and we use it to communicate with our customers. Its also great for community news.

Lunabelly · 21/06/2011 08:42

Am learning to love Twitter.
I love the instant interaction with RL friends, my DH is finally online because of it.

Have found that some slebs who I used to love are actually really boring, that some who always seemed boring are actually as mad as a box of frogs...For example, on Eurovision night, Simon LeBon's running commentary was very amusing, Joan Collins is quite funny, mystery comic is not, and my kids like the fact that there is interaction with cBeebies presenters - DD3 is well chuffed that one presenter wants to use her chicken joke (relax, I tweeted it, not my bubba) in their show :)

CybilsLiberty · 21/06/2011 08:48

. I follow hardly any celebs, and most people on Twitter are dull (including me) 'Waiting in car for rain to stop'

And? What do you expect me to say in return to that?

BUT as a chat board, fast chat, it is good fun

TechLovingDad · 21/06/2011 09:00

The Queen_UK and Darth Vader spoof accounts are funny. Vader's father's day jape was good.

I subscribe to all the specific news topics I like so get the news I want instantly. I find it so useful.

But I'm dull so rarely post anything.

Lunabelly · 21/06/2011 09:27

There is something quite horrific on there this morning - If you regularly tweet you will no doubt know what I mean - please, report that creature to twitter and your local police twitter account.
If they are stupid and twisted enough to be posting what they are posting, then hopefully they are stupid enough for the police to find them and deal with them very quickly.

There is a huge difference between freedom of speech and that.

GabbyLoggon · 21/06/2011 09:27

yes, well twitter has a lot of users here. It can be fun. I wish there was a direct way of posting to twitter staff for advice. The list of problems does not always work for me. I did a fictional story about a randy lady vicar. It caused a little excitement.

TechLovingDad · 21/06/2011 10:29

By the way on Twitter I'm Paulthegerman. Grin

cumbria81 · 21/06/2011 10:47

I do not get Twitter. I just don't. I can't imagine anything worse than reading constant updates from people, interesting or otherwise. Surely there is not THAT much to say ?

Lunabelly · 21/06/2011 11:39

Some tweets are hysterical. Admittedly it's not hard to make me ROFPML, but even so...

and the whole Alice Pyne thing was truly heartwarming.

MmeLindor. · 21/06/2011 11:48

I use it.

To promote my blog, to chat to interesting people who I would never have met, to keep up on news.

It is not about "I am having my lunch" "Might have a biscuit later".

If you do it, then don't follow slebs unless they are truly interesting. Journalists are good for gossip and laughs, and they are more likely to interact with you than stuck up slebs.

I am @mmelindor on there, if anyone wants to follow me. I don't tweet about traffic jams. Much. And if I do they are at least French speaking traffic jams.

Sourdough · 21/06/2011 12:15

I'm a highly inept user of Twitter for work, but there's so much of it I can't get the hang of and I'm not particularly inclined to learn.
Good for communicating with others in our sphere who we wouldn't normally see regularly

slug · 21/06/2011 12:15

I use it professionally. It's the norm now at conferences I attend to have a hastag associated witht he conference. It's a way of carrying on the conversation started by the speaker. In some of the more daunting events the twitter feed is projected behind the speaker as they talk which can be quite disconcerting, but also useful to see others reactions to the content of the talk and to realise others are thinkg the same as you or are confused about the same points. It's also used as the starting point for the discussion afterwards. I spoke at a conference last week and someone tweeted an admiring comment about my shoes. Grin

TechLovingDad · 21/06/2011 12:17

Can I ask, do you ONLY use it professionally?

I was going to link it on my LinkedIn profile, but as it's mostly inane rubbish I thought it might make me look unprofessional.

ErinGoBraLess · 21/06/2011 12:17

I signed up just to read Kenneth Tong's page. Nosy git that I am.

MmeLindor. · 21/06/2011 12:17

ha at the compliment about your shoes.

MmeLindor. · 21/06/2011 12:18

TLD
You can have a professional and private account separate, I know a few people who do that. I think it is a bit of a faff though.

TechLovingDad · 21/06/2011 12:20

I probably wouldn't bother then.

Lunabelly · 21/06/2011 12:24

I am the same everywhere. Because I forget who I am half the time, only having to remember it once is helpful. Brain came out with placenta #4, you see?

The cBeebies presenters are lovely, and I got a RT by Joan Collins the other week :o

TobyLerone · 21/06/2011 15:42

Well, I now follow you, TLD, but you're right -- you're boring Grin
