Rinsing mince, yes really.

I think that the idea of cooking a packet of mince, rinsing it (using a colander) then putting it back in the pan is well, weird.

Fair enough skimming the crap that comes off it, but rinsing it takes away all the flavour of the meat.

This has been a long-standing argument between me and dp.

I appreciate your input Grin

If it's to get rid of the fat and not the flavour he should do what my mum did (in the 70s, guessing there wasn't a low fat option) - brown it, pour a bit of cold water over to cover then put it in the fridge until the fat set. She used to scrape it off then carry on cooking. I don't think she does it any more....

Maybe your DH and other DP have been reading the same magazine. It is currently recommended in the July edition of 'Mens Health' magazine.

It's the way to loose weight for the man who leads a busy life Hmm

Pet his courgette?

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 21/06/2011 22:38

My friend does this but that's because she buys really cheap economy mince that's about 30% fat to meat I work on the logic that I'd rather pay slightly more for extra lean steak mince, as in the end I'll get more edible actual meat for my money, hence it gets dry fried and doesn't swim in grease (and tastes pretty damn good if I say so myself)

And does he harangue his meringue?

MinnieBar · 21/06/2011 22:39

Refry his shepherd's pie?
(keeping with the mince theme there, see?)

Enmesh his créme fraîche?

iscream · 22/06/2011 05:22

I usually rinse it. My friend adds water after it's cooked, brings it to a boil and dumps the water out. My reason is I don't seem to feel well after consuming fat or grease. Maybe I will try blotting it with paper towels after straining the fat off instead, if you all say it makes it bland. I never noticed.

I guess I would live if I didn't rinse, I never kicked the bucket after eating meatballs or hamburgers etc..

Buda · 22/06/2011 06:09

Loving all the rhyming! You are a funny lot.

Rinsing mince after cooking was a tip from the days when low-fat was the latest thing. The idea was to cook the mince, drain, put in a colander and pour hot water over it to remove more fat. It does remove flavour obv but if you are using in something like bolognaise or something and adding herbs etc. you wouldn't notice so much.

Am I really old if I remember when low fat was just becoming the latest thing?

TheMagnificentBathykolpian · 22/06/2011 06:37

I rinse. Have you seen how much fat comes off mince? No thanks. I can live without that clogging up my arteries Grin And it tastes just as nice without the fat.
