Thought about this when reading another thread & just wondered what people thought. I do believe in angels but have never seen one.....

I don't believe in angels, I have had plenty of awful times when a bit of supernatural fairy dust would have helped, but none was forthcoming!

cece · 18/06/2011 18:13

No!

TimeWasting · 18/06/2011 20:37

Izzy, I don't believe in the soul. Which incidentally enough is my religious belief.

Of course we don't know everything about the workings of the universe, but accepting that uncertainty is vastly different to speculating wildly, or frankly, just making shit up.

Where did the fluffy image of lovely angels helping people find parking spaces and flipping around on fluffy white wings? Sort of like the Roman household gods. Or possible little fairies or something?

What happened to swords of judgment, firey swords, messages from god (important ones - not "if you keep going 20 metres there is a space you can reverse into") and destruction of cities?

Clytaemnestra dh and I were talking about this thread last night, and this is exactly what we said. The angels of the Bible are (to me) terrifying. I would be petrified if I saw one of those! But nobody ever seems to have any important info - and they will help my mum find a parking space, but not help my Dad with MS be able to walk to the bathroom unaided. It does not make sense.

Lovecat I don't know if they were angels or not, but that is a really great story, and obviously an experience (whether a dream or not) that gave your dh great comfort. I am so pleased your story had a happy ending - there are not enough of those.

I'm going to take one issue with one argument - God and free will (essentially onager's point).

God does not change things directly, he works through you.

For example: I was driving my car and got locked into a horrible black ice skid heading towards another car. I screamed (prayed) for God and he told me what to do (turn the steering wheel the exact amount to correct it) - he did not correct it for me, he told me what to do.

So when praying for someone it may lead them to remain in hope, be better at choosing treatments but God doesn't 'cure' people because of free will.

Another quick example: God did not part the Red Sea - Moses just listened to him intently and arrived at exactly the right moment for the sea to be out and low. The miracle is that Moses listened and was at one with God's will.

My friend (very spiritual) has a parking angel too Grin In truth she is probably close God's will.

To believe in angels you would have to believe in god, many dont.

LilQueenie · 20/06/2011 13:42

angels are non denominational so you dont have to believe in god or any other religion.

PerryCombover · 20/06/2011 13:45

ah no
no to angels and angle cards and angels to watch over me and any other angel related guff and actual angels
no

2rebecca · 20/06/2011 13:56

No, nor fairies, elves, goblins, demons, genies etc.

Clytaemnestra · 20/06/2011 15:34

"angels are non denominational so you dont have to believe in god or any other religion."

Erm....really?
Are you sure you're not thinking of pixies?

What is the origin of the non-religious angels then? Has someone told them they need to hand back the halos and firey swords? Gabriel might be a bit upset, he's been saving a fortune on his heating bills.
