To judge those who shop in Boden?

Anyone who pays £15 for 1 normal simple t-shirt for a sproglet must be mad, surely!?

AIBU to think people who shop in Boden are mugs?

OP posts:

I really like Mini Boden. The quality's great. (Except for the "worn look" jeans. AHEM.) I go to the clearance on their site and get next year's clothes for DS all the time, and also use the "25% off and free shipping" deal. Plus, I can ebay it when he's outgrown it for most of what I paid for it.

Omigawd · 17/06/2011 08:44

YANBU Boden is getting a bit common now, isn't it, now that justvanyone can buy it off eBay. Which brand should I use to show that my kids come from a superior home?

hmc · 17/06/2011 11:10

It's rather pathetic of you Omigawd to assume that people buy mini boden for ostentatious reasons - ridiculous!

Irksome · 17/06/2011 11:14

I quite like Boden for my younger child. I shy away from anything that shrieks BOOOOOODEN though, like hotchpotch t-shirts and the like. To be fair, it does last very well and I like passing things on. It's often been the only place I can find what I think of as 'normal' t-shirts or jamas or whatever. No stupid writing or sequins or tat.

I have gone off it a bit since realised old JB is good pals with David Cameron and Nick Clegg, though.

weblette · 17/06/2011 11:17

I'm far judgier of people who use the term 'sproglet' tbh Hmm

Allinabinbag · 17/06/2011 11:17

I've just been on the Boden site (as I have never bought it) and it all looks fine to me, some of the summer dresses are pretty and the odd pair of shoes quite practical. I think people would look better wearing Boden even if it is all a bit jolly than the uniform of three-quarter length trousers and fleece that everyone seems to be wearing at the school gates this week.

Lambzig · 17/06/2011 11:17

Omigawd you could always try Petit Bateau.

rosie1979 · 17/06/2011 11:18

YABU - I do not wear it but the kids clothes wash amazingly and usually last two years. And they do boys clothes in great bright patterns and stripes, not like other kids clothes shops that want little boys in muted khakis.

And the girls clothes! OMG I wish I had had dresses like that when I was little.

It does not attempt to be too grown up, no sexualising, no inapproriate slogans.

It always has great discounts - free postage ect.

FridayFanjoFun · 17/06/2011 11:22

I don't judge people on where they shop for clothes. How utterly ridiculous!

My wardrobe comes from all over the place - Boden (shock horror!), Topshop, Oasis, Warehouse, Reiss, Hobbs, Fat Face, White Stuff, Joules, Primark, Dotty P, New Look, Peacocoks, Matalan, Tesco, Asda etc depending on what I need, what's on sale, how flush (or not) I am that month. Pretty hard to judge me, don't you think?

Oh, and I happily pay full price (£80+) for Boden dresses because they are good quality, wash well and always do a longer length for us tall peeps. I also invest in winter coats and dressing gowns for the kids from Boden, despite them being a bit pricey, because they actually last a whole year without falling apart.

Sometimes cheapo clothes are a false economy.

BulletWithAName · 17/06/2011 11:22

I don't judge them for spending £15 on a t-shirt, I judge them for having no clue about fashion Wink

I'd never even heard of it before I joined MN!

itisnearlysummer · 17/06/2011 11:24

hmc actually, a friend of mine does buy mini boden for her DDs for ostentatious reasons. She likes what she says about them as a family. Hmm

thaigreencurry · 17/06/2011 11:28

Only buy in the sale. Would never buy anything for me just for the boys. I am lucky in that my mum buys most of the boys stuff, mostly supermarkets, Matalan and NEXT. I just buy additionals for them in the Boden sale. I spend no more than £30 per year. The quality is fab, I buy big and it lasts, ds wore a striped pullover thing for 4 years and it is still in good enough condition for ds2, it was well worth the £8 that I paid.

thaigreencurry · 17/06/2011 11:30

I can't stand Johnny Boden though I think he is a sexist arse.

FridayFanjoFun · 17/06/2011 11:31

Oh, and I hate the Boden fashion reverse snobbery.

I am rocking a black Boden dress today with the most fabulous scarlet rip off Laboutins, jewellery my designer friend made especially for me and a damn fine Maxmara trench.

So fuck right off Grin

newpup · 17/06/2011 11:42

I buy Boden for my DDs.

I can afford it.

I like it.

Why does it bother you?

LDNmummy · 17/06/2011 12:04

I had heard of boden once before MN on a show featuring its founder. It was described as the new big thing of the middle classes.

I have looked at the boden website once and it was the most boring clothing. I couldn't imagine spending that kind of money on such drab attire.

No offence. I do understand what others have said about being able to buy non limited adult clothing for their little ones, but there are other places you can buy clothes like that that are also stylish and hard wearing.

Boden is incredibly dull and over hyped IMO.

BulletWithAName · 17/06/2011 12:05

Totally agree with LDNmummy

IsItMeOr · 17/06/2011 14:29

I shop in Boden for me and DS. I also buy the bulk of DS's clothes from H&M, M&S and Sainsbury's. But I like Boden for brightly coloured young boys clothes which is not basically mini-men's clothing. And while I don't mind the occasional branded thing, I don't want him to be a walking advertisement/completely cocooned in supposed boys' interests.

It actually saddens me to see so many of DS's small friends looking exactly like mini versions of their Dads. I like DS to look like a little boy, out to have some fun.

I think that I am neither mad nor a mug, as I buy most of the things at 20-25% off. Or from Ebay second hand.

Perhaps the OP would like to post photos of her and her DC's wardrobes, with a price list, so that we can judge for ourselves?

cantspel · 17/06/2011 14:40

i have never heard of boden so i just went on their site to have a look.
My youngest is 13 so i thought i would look at tshirts and swim wear for him for our holidays.
£28 for a pair of board shorts that look no different than the one i can get for half the price on mandm direct and £17 for a tshirt with twee pictures on.
I left the site without even bothering to look at the womens clothing.

CrapolaDeVille · 17/06/2011 14:43

I can't wear Boden but I've never, and we're not wealthy, bought supermarket shit for any of my family. I cannot abide 'branded' clothing, hate poorly drawn dinosaurs/fairies on clothes. My dcs wear Boden, John Lewis, Gap and things like Yumi, Uttam..there was a time when we could afford Catimini and Oilily Sad.

notso · 17/06/2011 14:54

The coat I bought for DS1 cost about £17 with a voucher they sent me and an offer code, lasted two years of almost daily wear and sold on Ebay for £15.
Put that in your judgy pants and sit on it.

pink4ever · 17/06/2011 15:07

I dont buy Boden because 1)cant afford it 2)its catalogue shopping-naff imo. but to all the posters on here frothing at the mouth trying to deny its middle-class ostentation-come on,get fucking real!. Of course you can buy stuff on the high street much cheaper. I also dont like character/identkit clothing for dcs. I shop at h&M,Zara,Boots and occasionally Peacocks.Dont spend a fortune and my dcs look fine.

I've had stuff passed to me from Tesco/Sainsburys 2nd or 3rd hand and then passed it on to friends after. How much better quality is a 15 quid t-shirt going to be to a 50p one? Because it would have to last 30 times longer to justify the price!

FridayFanjoFun · 17/06/2011 15:14

'Middle class ostentation'?

See, I just genunely do think 'get a life' when people spout such tripe about clothes. I mean, they're clothes. Fucking clothes. Why do people care so much about a clothing label?? Or what other people buy/wear? I have friends who only ever buy secondhand and friends who would think nothing of spunking a grand on one item of clothing. Different styles, different values, different pay packets, different strokes/folks.

Stop this petty waffling on about Boden.
