I unfortunately got talking to someone at school today, and I mentioned that fact that the demise of manners on the road saddens me (I excell at smalltalk Wink), and she went off on a tangent that she only lets people with "naice" cars out into traffic.

Quite a productive day.

Wow it never occurred to me to base my decisions while driving on the model of the car - won't be able to help myself now Grin

Maybe we should have a mumsnet colour of the day - be nice to all red car drivers etc and see if we notice a difference Grin

SoupDragon · 15/06/2011 08:26

I think it makes you rather thick and shallow if you judge people by their car.

MindyMacready · 15/06/2011 08:28

I think it makes you rather thick and shallow if you judge people, who judge people by their car. Wink

microserf · 15/06/2011 08:58

hmm, i should note that although i am very judgey about city 4x4s especially on the school run, it's never actually occurred to me not to let anyone into traffic.

except people that drive like total wankers. i never give way to those fuckers.

Chandon · 15/06/2011 09:07

squeakytoy....I judge people who judge others bad manners but then shout: "It's ok you're fucking welcome!" to be nutters.Grin

So next time someone does me a favour and I fail to acknowledge it, I'd better brace myself for them yelling : "HAVE YOU NOT GOT ANY FUCKING MANNERS!" people like this make me GrinGrinGrin

foolserrand · 15/06/2011 13:05

Can't let people out who are on their phone. Regardless of what they drive. I used to get irate when people didn't thank me for giving way. Now I blow a raspberry at them. Makes ds giggle so I feel better :)
Dh won't let anyone out in case they crash and blame him.Hmm

Helenagrace · 15/06/2011 13:21

I live near a sixth form college and we are plagued by driving school vehicles. I have noticed that they often don't get let out (and not just by me). I usually let other women out (especially if they have children in the car) but I never let BMW drivers out (BMW standing for Brainless Moronic Wanker as far as I am concerned). Oh and salesmen types in sports cars (arrogant idiots) and old people (too slow).

Actually I appear to be fairly driverist...

trixymalixy · 15/06/2011 13:29

This really pisses me off. I drive a 4x4 because I live up a huge hill in Scotland and wouldn't be able to drive up to our house for months of the year if I drove a 2 wheel drive. I also drive it across fields on a regular basis. We regularly tow classic cars so need something that can tow 3.5 tonnes and need 7 seats to drive grandparents and kids about.

But how do you distinguish me from the Chelsea tractors when I'm driving in town?

Find me a car that can do all those things that you're not all going to judge and I'll buy it.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/06/2011 13:42

Is it a black Range Rover. the size of a bus with blacked out windows and alloy wheels?

Is it one of these?

If not you're alright. You can tell, really. And actually, I don't have as much of a problem with the Chelsea tractors as when they're driven by tossy fuckwit men who think they're driving something tiny and speedy and not something that could kill the average car as soon as look at it.

I let everyone out, all the time. That way I get to feel all angellic at the same time as really annoying the person behind me Grin

In my job, I get to know intimate details of peoples finances and I can promise you that in the vast majority of cases, flash cars aren't paid for and often the paymentrs can barely be met. Really well off people drive very ordinary cars.

BelleDameSansMerci · 15/06/2011 14:04

otchay I've got a two seater too and have had the same experience Grin

I love that my car only has room for DD and me (heaven help me if we ever need to take the cats somewhere though).

I judge all of you car users!
We had a 'naice' car with DP's job but have not replaced it since he left the company.
We now use public transport and walk everywhere.
< polishes halo >
Having said that I did used to have my own driving 'rules': never let out a car/van/lorry that I can't see in front of.
And when being tailgated in the city centre traffic by overzealous (usually male) driver, let EVERYONE out. Especially when a bus wants to pull out as I'm turning off.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/06/2011 14:23

How can I get one of these cars then create? I might feel more kindly disposed towards them if I had one :o

lexxity · 15/06/2011 14:32

I drive a 4x4. It does all sorts of everything for us. It's bastard expensive though, we looked at changing it but it's worth hardly anything and the finance on a newer car was too much once everything had been factored in, so we're keeping it for now. Runs on LPG though so it's actually very clean and much cleaner than a lot of other vehicles out there.

LadyFlumpalot · 15/06/2011 14:33

I have two cars, a nice sensible PUG 206 and a souped up modified Mitsubishi. Guess which one people judge?

It's really quite amusing because people go out of their way to be awkward when I'm in the Mitsi, like deliberately trying to overtake me etc. I just pull a "whatever" face at them.

Irksome · 15/06/2011 14:46

Well if it amuses you and entertains them, everyone's a winner, hey! Grin

SpecialFriedRice · 15/06/2011 14:56

I dont really judge any cars unless they are a big shiny land rover / range rover with alloy wheels and crap like that. Only because those things rarely, if ever, actually go off road.

If I had the money I would buy one of those big fancy Range Rovers or a BMW X6... I'd have to judge myself then as I doubt I would take it off road... But then if I was in an accident I would just run over the person/car/bus and carry on my merry way :o

IgnoringTheChildren · 15/06/2011 15:28

I don't judge people based on the car that they drive because, like me, they might not be driving it through choice - I fucking hate dislike my car and I would hate to think that anyone judges me because of it.

However I do judge people based on the way that they "personalise" their car. Drive a BMW? No problems, I'll let you out. Decorate your BMW with "princess on board" signs or other tasteless pink shit and... well I'll probably still let you out coz I'm nice like that - but I will be judging you! Grin
