How much notice, if any, would you give your cleaner?

Don't know what to do. We have a lady clean for us every week. She's done nothing wrong, I've just decided that it's making me lazy and I've on weight since I've stopped cleaning like I used to it's an unnecessary luxury.

I'd feel mean if we didn't give any notice, but I don't know what to do. Would a week's notice be ok? Or should OH pop back to the house when she's here to say we don't need her any more when she clean after this week?

Was there any kind of contract exchanged or was it a casual thing? If it was just a casual verbal agreement then I would say 1 week was fine but certainly no less. No notice at all would be very unfair to your cleaner.

nethunsreject · 14/06/2011 20:12

You ought to give notice, yes, of course.

Didn't you have a contract?

Personally I'd give 4 weeks.

smudgethepuppydog · 14/06/2011 20:14

I think a month's notice would be best but if you pay her weekly she might accept a week's notice.

HettyAmaretti · 14/06/2011 20:14

I had to let my cleaner go because we couldn't afford her any more. It didn't occur to me to give her less TBH.

sausagesandmarmelade · 14/06/2011 20:15

Agree with 4 weeks

HettyAmaretti · 14/06/2011 20:15

Erm, eh? I gave her a month's notice. It didn't occur to me to give her less TBH.

smudgethepuppydog · 14/06/2011 20:16

It would be cowardly to let her clean this week then tell her you don't need her anymore imo.

ScaredyDog · 14/06/2011 20:17

No, no contract. Just money in her hand.

I've said give her a week's notice, DP said he would ring her and just say this would be her last week.

Not giving her any notice at all is a pretty shitty thing to do to someone IMHO. At least have the decency to give her some warning.

ZillionChocolate · 14/06/2011 20:19

I try to give at least two week's notice just for holidays. If you can afford it then I would want to give a month.

Jonnyfan · 14/06/2011 20:19

I think a month would be fair, although you could agree to less if she finds another place to clean. She might really need the money so she needs time to find another place.

nethunsreject · 14/06/2011 20:21

Well, I hope your employer treats you better than you want to treat her.

Pandemoniaa · 14/06/2011 20:21

If you could afford to keep your cleaner but have chosen to let her go because you feel she's an unnecessary luxury then you owe her the decency of 4 weeks notice. To get a phone call from your DP telling her that she's history at the end of the week is pretty shitty, tbh.

ScaredyDog · 14/06/2011 20:23

Thanks for your opinions. Will give her two weeks I think and some extra money.

OP posts:
nethunsreject · 14/06/2011 20:23

Yes, Pandemonium. Completely agree.

If it is not because you have no money to pay her, then you should do the decent thing and give notice.

nethunsreject · 14/06/2011 20:23

x-post.
Fair play to you!

chelstonmum · 14/06/2011 20:24

4 weeks is the decent thing to do.

Give her time to try and replace the hours lost with someone else and not be out of pocket this month, she may rely on the money. Also, as you have said, she has done nothing wrong.

HettyAmaretti · 14/06/2011 20:24

Well, that's 10 out of 10 for starting a thread and totally ignoring all the advice given on it. Well done.

Do what you like. It will come back and bite you on the bum if it's not the right and fair thing though.

ScaredyDog · 14/06/2011 20:26

Tbh I wouldn't expect her to give me any notice if she couldn't clean for us any longer. I was asking for opinions, thanks for them :)

Good x posting from me there.

Still thinks she deserves a month's notice though. I have to skip meals to do that for our cleaner, I wou;dn't have had it any other w`y.

HettyAmaretti · 14/06/2011 20:26

and again

ScaredyDog · 14/06/2011 20:26

And HettyAmaretti, I'll give her two weeks notice and some extra cash as a thank you, which will make it up to nearly four weeks wages, don't think there was any need for you to be so nasty.

OP posts:
trixymalixy · 14/06/2011 20:27

4 weeks notice is the right thing to do.

ScaredyDog · 14/06/2011 20:28

Fair enough, HettyAmaretti, you xposted. I was saying what I planned to do in my second post, you guys made me change my mind :)

HettyAmaretti · 14/06/2011 20:29
Hmm

Was in reply to your post of 20:17:36, fair comment (at that point in the tread) IMHO.
