How much notice, if any, would you give your cleaner?

Don't know what to do. We have a lady clean for us every week. She's done nothing wrong, I've just decided that it's making me lazy and I've on weight since I've stopped cleaning like I used to it's an unnecessary luxury.

I'd feel mean if we didn't give any notice, but I don't know what to do. Would a week's notice be ok? Or should OH pop back to the house when she's here to say we don't need her any more when she clean after this week?

I'd say 4 weeks, less is rude.
Cleaners who have given us notice (because they were moving back to Poland) have given the same, AND introduced us to another cleaner.

lol

I have x-post-itus and will be retiring for tea.

ScaredyDog · 14/06/2011 20:31

Like I say, I wouldn't expect any notice from her if she couldn't clean for us any longer. Will make sure I do it properly, thanks for the advice.

Enjoy your tea Hetty :)

I think four weeks, or four weeks money (if you don't require her to work those weeks).

Why do you need OH to deal with this?

ScaredyDog · 14/06/2011 20:40

I don't need him to deal with it, it makes sense as he can pop home and see her why she's cleaning as he works nearby.

Thanks again :)

You wouldn't need much notice if she stopped cleaning for you because that's not something that really matters that much, but the other way around is different as it is her income you're talking about. If you give her a month's wage it doesn't matter how much notice I suppose!

redwineformethanks · 14/06/2011 21:47

This is how she earns a living. Definitely she should be entitled to proper notice. I'd have gone for 6 weeks.

Imagine being in her shoes.

hildathebuilder · 15/06/2011 10:41

How long has she cleaned for you? if its more than 4 years you have to give her at lest a week for each year up to a maximum of 12 weeks (and pay her for it) if less than 4 years I would probably give her a month

porcamiseria · 15/06/2011 10:44

give her 1 weeks and sweeten it with pay for next week? she has done nothing wrong and its good karma

muriel76 · 15/06/2011 10:49

I gave 6 weeks notice. Our cleaner had been with us for 4 years and I felt so awful having to let her go.

I also tried to find someone to take her on from us but unfortunately didn't manage to find anyone.

Mandy2003 · 15/06/2011 10:55

My friends who work as cleaners and have been let go under the circumstances you describe have usually found themselves dispensed with there and then, no notice. I think 2 weeks plus a tip/gift would be good.

eurochick · 15/06/2011 11:36

I also think 4 weeks notice is right. I expect hat my cleaner relies on the money she gets from us. It is appropriate to give her a fair chance to find an alternative source of cash.

Mumwithadragontattoo · 15/06/2011 11:44

I think 2 weeks' notice plus a tip is fine to be honest. She might not actually want to be committed to coming to you for a few weeks when she is looking for someone else to replace you.
