I've just seen some tinned mushrooms in a supermarket and yo me, the idea of vegetables in a tin is a strange and slightly gross one, aiby?

Only a little bit, because they are gross, but come in handy for a store-cupboard curry!

you don't eat baked beans, chopped tomatoes, kidney beans or sweetcorn out of a tin then?

I agree some things are yuk from a tin but for some people they are a staple - whats better - tinned veg or no veg?

usualsuspect · 14/06/2011 18:53

I love tinned garden peas

I must be gross, tinned is often all I can afford.

PinotGrigiosKittens · 14/06/2011 18:53

I did smile at the link between your MN name and your thread title.

Quite!

I agree with ashamed and euphemia.

organictwat · 14/06/2011 18:54

I do use them to cook with but I mean just eating them on there own, not in food

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow · 14/06/2011 18:55

you don't eat tinned tomatoes???????

nicespam · 14/06/2011 18:55

i ate half a tin of processed peas tonight - cold - yum

organictwat · 14/06/2011 18:55

Is it actually cheaper to buy tinned veg though??

PinotGrigiosKittens · 14/06/2011 18:56

A tin of sweetcorn is a ver good hangover recovery food. Fact.

organictwat · 14/06/2011 18:57

Ah yes tinned sweetcorn, I do eat that.

It is if you live around here and factor in the travel to a shop that sells decent fresh stuff.

earlyriser · 14/06/2011 19:00

mmmmm tinned mushrooms, all slippery and slimy. Great eaten cold straight from the tin, with a smidgen of yellow mustard!

organictwat · 14/06/2011 19:00

How do they make it last so long?! I used some kidney beans in a chilli the other day which had been in the cupboard for almost 2 years, they tasted fine but the idea grossed me out a bit!

PamBeesly · 14/06/2011 19:02

I like tinned and they are cheaper but I prefer fresh. Can I ask any tinned veg gurus if tinned tomatoes are high in nutritional value or does the canning process ruin the nutrients? Sorry for the hijack OP...

organictwat · 14/06/2011 19:03

I don't think they do hold any nutrients which is one of the reasons they gross me out..

catinthehat2 · 14/06/2011 19:04

tinned mushy peas

nutritious and delicious

organictwat · 14/06/2011 19:04

I know frozen hold nutrients but I don't think they taste as good and aren't much cheaper at all

Want2bSupermum · 14/06/2011 19:04

I didn't know beans were veg, I thought they were a legume?

I do consume tinned fruit and veg (tomato, peaches, mushy peas and sweetcorn) on a regular basis but don't count these as part of my 7 a day. One of my fav desserts is tinned peaches and cream!

catinthehat2 · 14/06/2011 19:06

How do they make it last so long?!

High temperatures drive air out of the tin before sealing, so no bacteria to speak of

AngryFeet · 14/06/2011 19:07

Tinned veg do look nasty to me. I buy frozen to save money - cant imagine how canned ones could be nutrious anymore tbh. I do eat tinned fruit though - it tastes nicer to me!

onceamai · 14/06/2011 19:08

Beans, tomatoes, sweetcorn, mushrooms (at a push) absolutely nothing wrong with them. Tinned fruit is very good too and a quick pud that also serves as one of the five a day. Tinned plums in a charlotte - tin of blackberries in apple pie, tinned peaches and arctic roll with raspberry sauce - yum.

Scaredycat3000 · 14/06/2011 19:08

Grin My DP says I'm a snob because I always pull a face everytime he wants tinned peas for tea. Gray peas, yuck. Some tinned veg work fine, tomatoes, sweetcorn, most beans for example, but some just end up gray and mushy.
