we currently have a shit chesterfeild like this but in red - which we got from freecycle as old sofa was knackered.

i hate it, the chairs are uncomfy and its smelly, doesnt fit in our odd shape sitting room

I would love to buy something all soft and lovely like this but DP says no

but MN can decide, new sofa... or not?

My in-laws have a brown Chesterfield-type sofa and it's the most uncomfortable thing I've ever had to sit on. And it looks like it belongs in a pub.

New sofa vote from me.

And I don't see why having children precludes you from having fabric, even in cream. We've had a cream sofa for 11 years now and it's not remotely trashed (just rather worn on the arms as you would expect after 11 years). The covers are washable and after a run through the machine look just fine.

If your furniture gets trashed by virtue of having children them something has gone wrong somewhere - if you don't let them jump on it, drink Ribena on it or stick knives in it then it will be fine.

OnlyWantsOne · 12/06/2011 20:36

maybe I should point out to DP, that neither kids drink ribena, or jump on the sofa ...

So washable covers/throws or squishy leather then.

And moving makes fuck all difference, you can easily move without trashing a sofa. Honestly you hate the sofa, it's hard, it stinks, it's embarrassing, you have the means to change it. Stubborn sofa man, compromise with your best lady friend. It'll make her happy.

Kiwimumm · 12/06/2011 22:06

Na get a second hand one but a nice one.

honeyandsalt · 12/06/2011 22:44

Ah I missed the lab bit.

I'd definately go for dark leather then, it's what my brother has had for years (kitten, dog, two young kids and they are not angels) and it is just dandy. Honestly if you started fretting about things getting used no-one would ever get anything, the economy would grind to a halt, world poverty would ensue. I'm not suggesting you exceed your means but that doesn't seem to be the issue here. I am begging you by your ankles, OH's D-whatever-it-is, begging you, do it for the country, for you children, for your job, for without a flow of goods and services ,why, we are all unemployed and David Cameron will have us put into a futuristic gladiatorial ring to fight to the death, with Simon Cowell and a resurrected Micheal Jackson to judge. Don't let that happen, OP's D-thing. Do it for all of us.

Don't get that new one that you linked.

We have one with those giant throw cushion backs and I hate it. The cushions never stay put, they squash out of shape, DH is always leaving one on the floor or balanced on the back because he says it's more comfortable with less cushions in it (which it is but it makes it look weird instead), there is always something getting lost down the back of them (often it's the dog!) and it's the worst sofa we have ever owned.

I hate it.

Your chesterfield link one is horrible too but if you win the argument get one with a proper back with 'normal' back cushions.

sarahtigh · 12/06/2011 23:00

DFS is rubbish if they were that good they would not be 50% off, I agree sounds like a rubbish chesterfield not a real one as cushions would not be foam, your choice i don't like that that is irrelevant but the movable cushions keep slipping and you have to keep pushing them back if you are moving in about a year get second hand one go to charity shop or an auctio n will have change from £100; as if you buy new it may not fit your new house or its decor

jasonwalker · 13/06/2011 09:21

Onlywantsone - although we always like a mention and links to our site - chesterfield sofa company would like to point out that the chesterfield sofa was not purchased from the chesterfield sofa company, and the comments of onlywantsone are not reflective of the quality of workmanship from the chesterfield sofa company.

ScroobiousPip · 13/06/2011 09:32

Personally I don't like either. If he's worried about it getting spoilt, why not buy one with washable covers. Get a couple of sets and it'll last years.

MackerelOfFact · 13/06/2011 10:09

Chesterfields are horrible, but DFS sofas aren't much better. YANBU for wanting something soft-furnished and comfortable though.

We have two second hand sofas with throws over them. It's a bit 90s student digs maybe, but I'm the one laughing when the DCs are wrecking a tenners worth of throw and not a grands worth of fancy sofa.

Jason walker ACGHHH shoo

Perhaps you would like to give me a new one then so I can rave how fab they are and not smelly and badly made?

I wouldn't be able to live with a sofa I hated/felt I couldn't relax on, which sounds like it's the case with you.

I'd get a new one, a soft, squishy leather one which you can wipe clean etc in your place and get rid of the old one!
