we currently have a shit chesterfeild like this but in red - which we got from freecycle as old sofa was knackered.

i hate it, the chairs are uncomfy and its smelly, doesnt fit in our odd shape sitting room

I would love to buy something all soft and lovely like this but DP says no

but MN can decide, new sofa... or not?

and i don't think a sofa will necessarily get trashed. why would it?
my children are not allowed to jump/stand on the sofa and they aren't supposed to eat on it.
if you teach them to use things nicely then there is no reason to think it will get wrecked. I know sometimes things happen that are unavoidable, but that's no reason to live with really manky furniture is it

ninah · 11/06/2011 18:46

I heart chesterfields

yomellamoHelly · 11/06/2011 18:51

I don't find Chesterfields comfy to sit on (they're very deep so have to pad myself with cushions and the back is too low) so I'd go for the new. If the only time you and dh spend together is snuggled on the sofa it needs to be comfy.

TheMonster · 11/06/2011 18:53

Oh I don't like the new one you are looking at.

I like Chesterfields.

honeyandsalt · 11/06/2011 19:24

Sounds like he's wanting to avoid another heavy job - I'd say you'll put them back on freecycle/ebay and buyer collects, then DFS guys will deliver new sofas. No effort required from the other half at all!

I really like the DFS one you linked to by the way.... don't buy cream if you have kids whatever you do. Been there, done that, wrecked the sofas.

biscuitmad · 11/06/2011 19:41

go to a second hand shop or a charity shop and see what they have. I would definately get extra covers. Saying that my brothers dog at 7 months old ruined the brand new corner sofa in an hour when they popped out. The sofa looks about 5 years old covered in scratches.

ninah · 11/06/2011 19:44

If you want to get rid of the old one and you're in the Midlands pm me

GooGooGadget · 11/06/2011 19:50

cream and children/ pets bad idea.

linky sofa not actually very nice.

YANBU to want a new sofa if yours is stinky, but be sensible about what you pick. You really don't want to be hating something that you haven't finished paying for.

Things only get trashed if you allow it. So keep the dogs off the furniture and certainly don't consider cream as a colour all the while you have children. But I'd also not want a smelly, uncomfortable sofa like your Chesterfield and would suggest you try the "unhygienic" line of attack next.

There's plenty of lovely, soft sofas that don't cost the earth out there (in nice colours too!) and if money is the main stumbling block try your local furniture recycling place. They've got to have better stuff on offer than a stinky old leather sofa.

LOving the colour of the one you linked too, hate the one you have.

New sofa

OnlyWantsOne · 11/06/2011 20:10

The dog isn't actually allowed in the siting room so that's fairly irrelevant and we are about to sort out a play room for the girls So the siting room would sort of just be our space

DoMeDon · 11/06/2011 20:11

I have a white leather sofa - DC and did have pets - I just give it a wipe over every day - at least you can see the dirt immediatley.

He is BU as his reasons are not good enough to put up with stinky sofa. But I vote against material with DC - will just get stinky too. DD has vom'd twice on this sofa - easy wipe off with leather.

OnlyWantsOne · 11/06/2011 20:19

Hes not convinced. And saying "we"ll talk about it" but now actually saying any thing Sad

MistressFrankly · 11/06/2011 20:37

Oooh i say stick a peg on your nose and live with the chesterfield! its gorgeous. Im not a fan of new sofa but i guess depends what sort of look you are going for in your house.

Personally would only ever have leather sofas because i am very clumsy and very fond of red wine Grin. And dd is a mucky lil pup no matter how hard i watch her. And her father is a prone to falling asleep with mugs of coffee in his hand Confused. So wipeable surfaces only here!

Can you not save up the pennies and buy the sofa yourself? If he is so attached to the old one stick it outside for him where you dont have to smell it Grin

breatheslowly · 11/06/2011 20:42

Don't get a cream one - we have been there and it's grim. I'd stick with leather if you can, but I certainly wouldn't have a stinky sofa - it must make your house smell and it isn't great for children when they have friends round to have a smelly sofa.

OnlyWantsOne · 11/06/2011 20:45

When we have friends round I NEVER take them to the sitting room - ever - they are horrid.

Oh it's just fucking horrid Sad

superjobeespecs · 11/06/2011 20:45

Get a two seater each?

honeyandsalt · 12/06/2011 19:10

@onlywantsone - why is he he sticking his heels in?

OnlyWantsOne · 12/06/2011 19:36

he thinks it will get trashed, wants to wait till we move (we dont plan on moving for at least a year)

FairyLightsForever · 12/06/2011 20:22

Do you have a British Heart Foundation furniture shop near you? You can something nice and comfortable for not too much money- I got a nice squishy red leather sofa for £75, and it's in really nice condition. It would be a compromise because you could get something more to your taste, but without spending crazy amounts of money.

FairyLightsForever · 12/06/2011 20:26

Blush sorry, my fault for posting before reading the second page- cat got there first with my suggestion Grin
