To wonder why people are happier watching murder than sex?

Why is it okay to depict murder on afternoon TV, but sex is banned?

What sort of messed up values does our society have?

OMG we rented that to watch with ds and dd. DD nipped off almost immediately while poor ds tied himself in knots trying not to be thought illiberal or homophobic at the age of 12 yet completely unable to watch.

Heh heh

Pagwatch · 08/06/2011 16:14

Poor hullyboy.

My mother clearly thought "what would the queen do" and everytime she sensed another blow job scene she would start dinner party conversations

HeadfirstForHalos · 08/06/2011 16:16

This Morning usually have some rude stuff on, usually under the flaky title of "medical reports".

I have seen cock and all on there Grin

Tyr · 08/06/2011 16:16

I think Judaeo-Christian morality is behind it in the West but doubt that all Christians would agree that murder is more appropriate viewing than sex. Probably because it doesn't involve fielding embarrassing questions from children.

GrimmaTheNome · 08/06/2011 16:17

It might be because while very few young people watching would dream of killing someone, sexual scenes might set their fevered imaginations ablaze.

(not saying it makes sense to me either, just speculating)

Also, you get warnings about 'strong language' but violence has to be extreme to merit a warning. I mean really WTF - Swearing never actually hurt anyone.

sungirltan · 08/06/2011 16:19

yanbu. i have had this discussion with dh many times. i think its a v bad reflection of society that extreme violence (we were talking about the saw films) is easier to get past the sensors than a graphic sex scene between consenting adults, i don't want to see more sex or tv as it happens but i would like to see much less violence!

MrsBethel · 08/06/2011 16:21

Yeah, I'd bever thought of that.

Arnie punching the sweet bejesus out of someone on Kindergarten Cop is fine afternoon scheduling. But someone talking about cock or muff is verboten.Confused

I think it is because people are 'happier' being 'shocked/scared' than they are embarrassed... in other words, most people have sex and can relate to it... most people canot relate to murder and are more 'curious' about it.. i.e crime etc is 'interesting' but not intimate... where as watching intimate stuff can be a bit bleck (purely because it is intimate, i.e not something u would usually share).

I am not really keen on either... tho I do like "Bones"....

I think people simply like anything that can allow vicarious experiences.

CaveMum · 08/06/2011 16:36

The US has a similar juxtaposition - they are happy to have heavy duty violence (and sex) on some tv shows, but swearing is rarely heard.

It's like the 24 drinking game - down a shot everytime Jack Bauer says "Damn!"

Insomnia11 · 08/06/2011 16:48

I agree MrsDo. I know what sex is like, thanks, I don't need it S P E L L I N G O U T F O R M E. Murder and other violence, I have no experience of.

Ormirian · 08/06/2011 16:51

Because it's not that interesting watching the police investigate someone having sex.

ninah · 08/06/2011 16:51

yeah sex is yawn, murder is far more interesting

Ormirian · 08/06/2011 16:52

I love watching crime dramas - just love 'em. I don't want to watch porn quite so much. The plot is usually crap.

MrsBethel · 08/06/2011 16:56

Yeah, I reckon MrsDo's onto something. Embarrasment, the cringe factor, must be a big part of it.

Why are we all so embarrassed about sex?

If I went to Tesco naked I'd probably get arrested for a public (sp) order offence. Why? What's wrong about a naked body?

OP posts:
Ormirian · 08/06/2011 17:00

Nothing wrong with a naked body. Nothing wrong with sex. (A bit Confused that you are instantly associating nudity with sex) But generally sex is seen as a private matter - most people think of it that way. It's not that sex is 'bad', it's just private.

Hullygully · 08/06/2011 17:03

Except dogging

Hullygully · 08/06/2011 17:03

And swinging

Hullygully · 08/06/2011 17:03

And orgies

Ormirian · 08/06/2011 17:06

Well if you are going to be silly hully!

I said most people think of sex as a private matter.

Greenshadow · 08/06/2011 17:08

It may be wrong, but I hate watching sex scenes, whether DC are present or not, but love murder/crime drama... Make of that what you will.

Maybe it is conditioning and is wrong, but there it is.

Hullygully · 08/06/2011 17:10

Me? Silly?

The idea.

MrsBethel · 08/06/2011 17:11

The only reason I mention sex and nudity in the same breath is because I think the neurotic ways society treats both possibly have the same root.

OP posts:
stickylittlefingers · 08/06/2011 17:12

I also find it odd and distateful that there are lots of "embarrassing" bodies (there was a reason why I didn't train as a GP), hospital dramas (eeugh gore) and crime drama (eeugh more gore) on in the evenings, when I might want to do a spot of post-prandial TV watching. It is not compatible with keeping one's dinner down.

All of you who want more sex/nudity during the day should move to Germany or get a satellite. There is lots of it on telly there. Also just generally on a sunny day, round and about. I think it's just too chilly here.

Ormirian · 08/06/2011 17:12

" because I think the neurotic ways society treats both possibly have the same root." and I think you are probably right! Unfortunately.
