Ok silly because I know its not quite a aibu

But thinking today about jobs that I am fascinated with , like personal shopper, and wondered what people on here do and if there is a big range of interesting careers. Ive read previously there are actors and writers on here, what other things? and is anyone a personal shopper?Do people actually use them?

Blimey, who would have guessed that there are 2x Bird of Prey workers on MN?

Pumpernickel10 · 08/06/2011 23:43

Sadly career as been on hold due to illness but fingers crossed be back soon doing what I do best looking after horses. Was working at a livery before I got ill.

Mumcentreplus · 08/06/2011 23:54

I'm a civil servant...

salsmum · 09/06/2011 01:54

I've always worked with people (young adults) with disabilities....now I'm an activities leader working with the elderly Grin....challenging but rewarding!

Loolah · 09/06/2011 03:01

for the past 10 years + I have worked as a support worker with Adults with learning difficulties that are detained under the mental health act in a secure hospital who also have challenging behaviour. I love my job hence the amount of time I have worked there, but only work part time since having DC

FiveBells · 09/06/2011 04:23

I'm a curator of art

Iteotwawki · 09/06/2011 05:00

Anaesthetist - day on the whole interesting and varied (depending on how sick the patients are and how hard the surgeons are trying to make them worse!). Currently in the process of planning a house build - oodles of awe fir architects and builders for being able to turn a desolate rocky hillside into a gorgeous home :)

Always wanted to be a spy - then I married one :) it's interesting watching his reaction to programs like Spooks or Alias - same as me watching Casualty!

Iteotwawki · 09/06/2011 05:01

s/fir/for

(given how many programmers there are here!)

chocywokky · 09/06/2011 05:11

I'm a personal shopper, love it! :o

Grockle · 09/06/2011 06:40

Bilbio- I use your pretty books all the time!

PureNewWoolWithPerfectStitches · 09/06/2011 07:09

I'm a teacher but at the moment I'm a sahm (not out of choice, I can't find any part time work). I really do enjoy being in the classroom with the children but the admin is crap.

I'd really like to find a new career although I'm trapped by the convenience of teaching for childcare/holidays.

Any career advisors out there who can tell me where to start looking?!

I work for the Scouts Association, at one of their National Activity Centres. I deal with schools, scout groups, brownies, guides, etc, booking them onto our campsite, and helping to arrange their activity programme for their stay - such as climbing, archery sessions, abseiling, etc. I get to deal with lots of different people - from school teachers to kids, many with SN. It is lovely to see them over-come their fears - at the start of the week they may be terrified of the zip wire, but then maost times by the end of the week they love it!

The scouts are also very flexible and child friendly.

Duchess They don't take over your life, they take over the house, garden, freezer. Smile

PenguinArmy · 09/06/2011 07:43

I used to be in the air cadets but know I can't rejoin for that very reason, it's a massive time commitment (in a good way), but still yearn to put back some of what I took out

echt · 09/06/2011 08:00

I've been teaching for more than 30 years, and have never been bored once.

Lots of other things, but never bored. :o

DialMforMummy · 09/06/2011 08:14

Same here Echt. might not be a fancy job but I love it.

oopsiedoopsie · 09/06/2011 08:19

I'm an engineering consultant working mainly in the field of vehicle / occupant safety; so started off designing / developing airbags, and moved on to full vehicle stuff, now working mostly in pedestrian protection.
Its fun, in its own way, and I like knowing I am actually making a difference, in some regard.

C4ro · 09/06/2011 09:28

I work in Logistics. I make and cost models of warehouse and transport networks. Lots of spreadsheets/ maps/ maths/ economics. It is project work with a range of top global companies, so always changing and learning new fascinating details and I get to travel a fair bit which is also nice (mostly... sometimes... if I'm in the mood for it!).

bilblio · 09/06/2011 09:31

Grockle Are they my books? or just ones like them? Do I know you? Confused

travispickles · 09/06/2011 09:43

Another teacher here (on ML) , although considering a career change. Especially now, having read all about your fascinating and inspirational lives Envy

hatwoman · 09/06/2011 09:44

wearenotinkansas funny that you say you'd like my job...I am thinking of taking on yours! I love the academic side of law (I have an LLM and have published a few journal articles) but feel the need to get my hands dirty. as it were - see it in practice and meet the people it affects (even if they think I don't need to sleep)

wearenotinkansas · 09/06/2011 10:06

ha! What area are you thinking of specialising in? The few people I know who work in human rights related areas generally love their jobs - v. competitive though. Criminal lawyers generally seem to be happy with their lot too.

export · 09/06/2011 10:30

Wow thank god I lurk on MN. Having finished my MA in Sept last year with huge enthusiasm...it has now dwindled into a reluctance to admit the job market is hard and I might not be able to do my career of choice. Unfortunately for me, all of my (male) friends seem to have walked into a good job, I must admit I have been slightly resentful about this turn of affairs and have been harbouring evil thoughts about the patriarchal society and so forth.

So it is so so so refreshing to see a huge thread of women doing the most exciting jobs and enjoying them Smile. I feel like I have been on a virtual careers day and feel very enthused once again. So thank you all, I bet your sons and daughters are secretly quite proud.

hatwoman · 09/06/2011 10:34

I'd like to do public law and/or medical negligence. I just spent a week at a top law firm that does public law - looked at cases involving care, local authority spending cuts, hospital protocols and a bit of prison law. mainly judicial review. It definitely confirmed for me it's what I'd like to do. I'm too old for criminal law and late-night visits to police stations. I just fancy doing the type of law that's about giving govt (in all its forms) a kick up the bum on behalf of people who are getting a shite deal.

what area did you work in?

ExpatAgain · 09/06/2011 10:53

yes, stealth with you on epidemiology, no clinical background though and think it helps in current competitive market..may do MPH at some point.

also love art, Fivebells, where do you work??

currently sahm due to visa restrictions, healthcare project manager previously..
