woman letting her dogs walk all over my picnic blanket and children has a go at me for 'making my children afraid of dogs.'

Had a lovely picnic on Friday with DH and 4 of the DC's. DH and DS's were playing football, DD2 & 3 were still sat on our picnic blanket as I was tidying our food leftovers away. We were right next to the playpark so ready for the swings.
Lady walks over with 3 dogs all off their leads. Not big dogs and one was very old, but they came over to investigate. I gently used DD's fold up changing mat to guide dogs away from the 2 little ones (just turned 1 & nearly 3). Another dog then sticks it's nose into our picnic bag whilst owner rather ineffectualy calls dogs back. They're more intrested in us than going back.
Again I shoo it away, then DS2 (9), says, mum is that dog peeing up our buggy? I go to check, it isn't but owner then has a go at me, saying 'You're going to make your children afraid of dogs, my dogs are gentle, my children have brought up with them!'
AIBU to think that if I don't want someone else's dog all over my picnic blanket and children I should have that right?
I'm afraid my response to her was along the lines of, 'I don't give a s*#t how you're children were brought up, i don't want your dogs sniffing around my children!'
She honestly ruined the afternoon for me as I felt drained by an unwanted conflict. I'm having a hard enough timeanyway as DD3 (1) has severe reflux and has been in lots of pain and not sleeping well at all untill her meds were adjusted a few days ago.

She is being extremely unprofessional and I'd report her.

was she there in a professional capacity then? I didnt realise HV did park visits Grin

also, who would you report - ring every PCT and say that women who has dogs - guffaws loudly!!

MilaMae · 06/06/2011 16:21

Thanks, yes he's off the antiobiotics and it doesn't hurt so much but all 3 are totally terrified now,one won't go out to play.

Seriously though as a nation we're far too polite about this. We do the typical British thing of grin and bare it,not anymore in this familyGrin.I will be reporting dogs on beaches to lifeguards, car parking attendants etc. I won't just smile weakly and nudge, hoping for the best.I will be saying your dog should be on a lead, shouldn't be on the beach. There are fines for beaches,I'm presuming for dog poo too.

I'm going to ring the council, take number plate numbers down and if any dog so much as lays a hairy paw on any of my dc ever again I shall be calling the police.I didn't this time or in the past,dp says I've been far too polite,he really let rip at a dog routing through our picnic this weekend.

If enough people complain to councils,cp attendants, life guards,MPs,police (in extreme cases) it will be dealt with far more seriously.

You did the right thing, don't doubt yourself, wish I had your balls Grin.

Not vindictive enough or have enough time to waste reporting her, but she did stuff her HV status in my face, said she was telling me as a childrens health care professional that I would make my children scared.

Re: Baddesley Clinton - they are indeed vicious, I had my toes nipped (had open toed sandals on and once they had finished my lunch, they went under the bench I was sitting to find pudding Hmm

AND one landed on my head Hmm

whomovedmychocolate · 06/06/2011 16:33

Ah she was a bonker HV. Explains a lot Wink

FWIW YANBU, a lot of dog owners seem to see their dogs as like small children to be indulged and fawned over. But they are even less charming than the snot infested three year olds at playgroup IMHO. Especially when they lick/sit on/knock over/eat the food of my children or anyone elses.

Thing is, they are actually BIGGER in most cases than my kids and that's intimidating to have something bigger than you barrelling towards you. Especially when I've been told 'oh he's a big softie' before a bulldog ripped my elbow to shreds as a teenager. Hmm

VivaLeBeaver · 06/06/2011 18:03

YANBU.

Could have been worse though, I had someone's dog cock its leg and piss up my opened picnic bag. Had to chuck all the food out.

wotnochocs · 06/06/2011 18:10

YANBU.How rude to let their filthy fu**ing dog come and walk on your picnic rug and stick it's nose in your picnic. And as for licking the baby!!! EEUuwww.
I would habve been livid

Chandon · 06/06/2011 18:40

I am afraid I might have laughed in her face, but i would not have sworn at her. That's a bit rubbish, esp. in front of your kids
