To be in tears over a sofa

Me and DP have been saying for a while now that we needed to replace our current sofas and get a corner sofa, which makes sense in our smallish living room. Yesterday we went to DFS and DP decided there and then that he wanted to buy a sofa. This was the first shop we'd been in, and we hadn't even measured the living room. I'm of the opinion that you don't buy a sofa on the first shopping trip. As far as I was concerned, the shopping trip was just to get ideas.

This is the sofa DP decided that he loved - it is very comfortable but I thought it looked really tacky because of the arms and bottom being a different colour. I wanted to look around at some others first. DP started making jokes with the (pushy) sales guy and saying 'this is how men shop', ie, they just get on with it and don't need to look around. He also got sucked in by the '50% off ending today' thing - well, the sofa is still 50% off, and probably always is because it's so hideous.

I've measured the living room and I feel sick - the sofa is going to literally take up two walls and will completely dominate the room. I got home and saw this on the website which I think is so much nicer and smaller. I'm so angry with DP for making such a big decision without thinking it through, and trying to make out I was being difficult for not wanting to buy it instantly, and with myself for not giving a firm 'no' because I couldn't be bothered to have an argument. We had an agreement that DP would replace the living room furniture and I would do up the kitchen, which I now see was really stupid as it made it harder for me to say no.

Really don't know what to do now as this bloody hideous thing is turning up in 5 weeks.

I would contact DFS first off and see if it's possible to put the order on hold while you sort this out. A sofa is a bloody big thing to be stuck with if you hate it. I would be hopping mad. Why did you let him order it?

Mandy2003 · 06/06/2011 14:05

Your DP's first choice is quite tacky, frankly, and it will date quickly. Also, I feel that the cushion backed sofas are a bad idea because the cushions could squash and mutate after a short time. Still, if you are stuck with it you could gradually work on the cushions till they look scruffy and then declare it as faulty!

The second one I love, it is very similar to mine. Mine is actually a chaise type which is useful as it acts as a kind of room divider.

squeakytoy · 06/06/2011 14:06

I would prefer the first one if it was my choice to be honest. But if you contact DFS they should be able to change your order anyway as it is so recent. So long as you and your partner can agree on it.

LolaRennt · 06/06/2011 14:07

cancel it

noddyholder · 06/06/2011 14:08

They are both a bit OTT really and dated but the second one doesn't seem as over bearing and it would go with more. How big is the room? They both look huge!

thiscantbehappening · 06/06/2011 14:08

Jesus wept, that one your husband chose is fucking shite. Yours is a much better choice OP. Ring the shop and tell them you want to swop.

MmeLindor. · 06/06/2011 14:08

I agree that the one that you like is much nicer.

Phone DFS and ask if you can change the order. Ask if they can put it on hold for 24 hours while you decide which one you want. The second one is more expensive, so make sure you mention that.

oneofthosedays · 06/06/2011 14:10

I don't think the first one is hideous but do prefer the second one. I second GML and ask DFS if you can put this on hold while you discuss with DP and see if he'll come round to the second one. And definately don't let DP pressure you into making such a hasty decision in future no matter what he says! If it's as big as you say it is will you even be able to get the thing in the house?!

Beamur · 06/06/2011 14:10

As you like another sofa from the same shop, it's not as if they are losing a sale - I'd ring them up and be super nice on the phone and see if they would be willing to change it.

Ormirian · 06/06/2011 14:11

I like them both TBH. But I have to say..cream? Really? You are braver than me! I have some white chair covers that I ordered months ago and I haven't had the courage to put them on yet Grin

There must be a cooling off period if you have signed. Certainly a day or 2 surely. Just cancel the whole order, don't order the other one yet.

DFS is always on it's final day., sale must end sunday bollocks.

Then start afresh looking.

LolaRennt · 06/06/2011 14:13

I think you can refuse delivery as well can you not?

flibbertigibbert · 06/06/2011 14:15

The sales guy implied that they start building it as soon as they get the order in which could be a problem.

So glad it's not just me who thinks the first one is awful. And I did voice my reservations about the cushion back not being very hardwearing.

I'm going to give DFS a call and see if they can do anything. The second one works out £300 more expensive with the chair as well, so surely its in their interest to get more money.

CREAM sofas??? Are you mad?? Shock

second one is marginally nicer than the first one.

Just ring up and ask if you can swap.

shirleyshortcut · 06/06/2011 14:16

have you got it on finance?

flibbertigibbert · 06/06/2011 14:16

Ormirian - no DCs yet and DP has paid for the guarantee so the covers can be replaced. Will still make everyone sit on throws though.

LolaRennt · 06/06/2011 14:16

I dont think they actually make each one as its ordered surely? Confused just call and cancel, your dh is was daft to believe in a dfs sale!

DoMeDon · 06/06/2011 14:16

I don't really understand why your H ordered a sofa you weren't keen on and wouldn't wait. Did you not express your displeasure? If you didn't YABU, if you did YANBU to cancel the order.

diddl · 06/06/2011 14:17

Well, I think it´s fine to buy a sofa on the first trip-if it´ll fit in the room & you both like it.

I hate trailing round & round on the off chance that you might see something else.

I much prefer the first one tbh.

But surely as it´s the same shop you can just change the order?

DoMeDon · 06/06/2011 14:18

Voiced concerns is not saying 'no I hate it and don't want it in my home'. I think you may be a bit annoyed at yourself for acquiescing.

melpomene · 06/06/2011 14:20

All dfs sofas arer mahoosive. We wanted to buy from them, but then discovered that even the smallest "compact" sofa in the shop was too small for our room.

flibbertigibbert · 06/06/2011 14:24

DoMeDon - yes I am angry at myself for not putting up more of a fight. But also angry that DP would make such a big decision (and as recent graduates with not a huge amount of money, it is a very big decision) without giving it proper consideration. It's not the first time he's done something like this (though never on such a big scale).

What I really resent is being made to feel that I have a problem with being indecisive because I want to take more than 10 minutes to make a decision about something I will have to use and look at everyday for the next 5 years.

Have spoken to DFS and they have agreed to put the order on hold. Hopefully, we can sort it out.

OP posts:
DoMeDon · 06/06/2011 14:28

i would make that clear to him for future decisions - it will always cause arguments if he ignores your wishes/opinions and way of doing things. It's a bit off to belittle you for wanting to make a 'proper' choice.

valiumredhead · 06/06/2011 14:29
