Some years ago, a true story

Boys of a youngish age chasing pidgeons; as they do....the birds usually fly off and leave the child disappoinred.

On this day.....a boy of 6-8 chased a bird which was busy feeding. He jumped on it....KILLED IT......there were a lot of people around some got very angry.....one talked of reporting the boys dad to the police.

What would you have done if you had been nearby....(anyone can give the daft answers, lets start with a few serious ones.)

ME SEXIST? nonsense. I genuineley believe most women are nicer than most men (By almost every test one could make)

Even the pigeon test? It is 99 per cent boys who chase them

WARS? it is 95 per cent men who still fight them

FOOTBAlLL ? I have seen both genders play good stuff. MEN cheat and foul much more than women.

This should be a BBC Radio 5 Live debate get Victoria or Shelagh (with a GH ) on the case . PLEASE....Bring Gabby Logan out of partial retirement (only 2 jobs now )

Snort because physical violence is the only type of violence there is.

If I wanted someone dead I would poison them because it is tidier and less hands on, if DH wanted them dead he would punch them in the face, outcome is the same, method is different.

Women are not 'nicer' than men, this just shows that you don't really know very many women very well.

ScousyFogarty · 02/06/2011 11:23

I forgot to credit MosEISLEY, for the critcism of me on sexist grounds. I hope he will respond to the 3 points I made then it can be taken from there.

Morloth stop being silly. I made 3 observations on the genders for which there is loads of evidence. Please answer those 3 points or butt out of the debate.

Study the crimne figures genderwise you silly non evidencial man or woman

If we made Pidgeon Pie our national dish that might reduce the flying vermin?

Morloth · 02/06/2011 11:29

LOL, I knew there was a reason you were on my 'Crazy, Do Not Engage' list Gabby.

Vomit at eating Pigeons. Poison, all of them, or perhaps 'flying' squads of small boys to jump on them at every opportunity. Hopefully ending with satisfying splats.

Then we can get started on the rest of the bird world.

onagar · 02/06/2011 11:38

I'd have comforted the child myself.

Kids chase birds and squirrels without really expecting to actually catch one.

Some people like to shoot them with guns which is less sporting and premeditated

MarsAttacks · 02/06/2011 11:38

Jumping on pigeons?

That's nothing.

My ex boss used to shoot squirrels that got into the roof space with an air rifle. Also used to hang out of the window and pick them off while they were sitting in the trees. Lovely having bloody furry corpses fall out of the loft hatch and onto my desk.

He claimed it was pest control. I think he enjoyed it all just a little bit too much. Unfortunately was all legal as squirrels are classed as vermin.

Wonder if he chased pigeons whan he was a kid???????

Thingumy · 02/06/2011 11:40

Ahh I see gabbyloggon has had a name change...

MarsAttacks · 02/06/2011 11:49

Were you referring to me Thingumy?

If so, no.

Namechanged so could not be identified by ex co workers as the incidents are pretty distinctive. But have never been called gabbyloggon? Who she???

If you think I am a troll (I guess that is what you mean???) then you are lucky to have had such a sheltered working life!

Thingumy · 02/06/2011 11:51

Nooo not you Mars,I meant the OP!

MrsFruitcake · 02/06/2011 11:53

You know that feral pigeons are on the UK vermin list don't you? This is due to the sheer numbers of them and diseases that they carry that pose serious health issues to us humans.

As for the kid, I'm pretty certain that he wouldn't have set out with the intention of culling the animal, and I'm guessing that the Dad would have been shocked at quite how the situation turned out, hence the lack of response. What did you expect him to do? Have his son arrested and then give the pigeon mouth to mouth and chest compressions?

You should have perhaps called emergency services, just like that woman who did for the theft of her snowman. Would have given us a laugh when it was propagated to youtube anyway.

MarsAttacks · 02/06/2011 11:57

Ok sorry thingumy!

Was a bit sensitive as I do accept my experience may be a little difficult for some to believe!

LynetteScavo · 02/06/2011 11:59

I bet that boy NEVER chased pigeons again.

I do hope he didn't need to much therapy.

I tell my DC not to chase pigeons, but they still occasionally do....if they accidentally killed one I would be beyond [shocked]. I wouldn't be able to tell them off. (And I tell my DC of for everything, I'm very grumpy)

Imagine having to clean pigeon blood of your childs shoe. ,boak>

No worse that running one over in a car, IMO

LynetteScavo · 02/06/2011 12:01

Pigeons are a health hazard.

My mother used to take me to Trafalgar sq to feed the things. Oh how it amuzed her to see them land on my head. Confused

MrsCampbellBlack · 02/06/2011 12:03

I hate it when children chase pigeons. I am terribly phobic about birds and pigeons flying up at me really upsets me.

And I just think its mean to derive pleasure from chasing birds/animals.

I would like to think I would have said something.

chasing birds and other animals is very different from torturing them. if a young child (3ish) sees others running they are likely to run too, its a game nothing about being cruel my ds chases the squirrels aroudn the garden or will try too and our cat

i am not sure i would have said anything likely to be too shocked, i am sure it has given him nightmares and jumping on a pigeon is cruel

DirtyMartini · 02/06/2011 12:08

There was an absolutely massive thread about chasing pigeons on here a year or two back and I was astonished at how passionate people got about it. Still am tbh.

Anyway, I am quoting WhereThe's post in full, as I think it is totally sensible and bears repeating:

MarsAttacks · 02/06/2011 12:09

I think it is most likely that the boy thought the pigeon would fly away as he jumped at it, he didn't take into account how slowly some of these fat pigeons move.

BalloonSlayer · 02/06/2011 12:13

Hate little gits chasing birds and animals and the parents that let them.

Morloth · 02/06/2011 12:18

I reckon the pigeon in question had probably had enough chest compression.

BalloonSlayer · 02/06/2011 12:24

Maybe it wanted to die. It had had enough of the flying-rat race and threw itself under the boy's feet. It was kindness really.

CliffTumble · 02/06/2011 12:25

They are not my feathered friends. Pigeons are vermin and no better than flying rats. Stamping on them is a bit extreme though.

transferbalance · 02/06/2011 12:35

not pigeons, but I watched several children taunting a peacock at ~Paignton Zoo, parents laughing along

was praying that the peacock would snap at their precious little fingers, that would've taught 'em

ScousyFogarty · 02/06/2011 12:42

It was a very hungry pigeon actually.

Cliff pigeons probably think we are vermin.

There is a lotof kindness to animals on this site
