Why do people enjoy picking others up on their spelling or grammar

TakeMeDrunkImHome · 31/05/2011 01:29

i have noticed this a LOT here, and i am fairly new. Is there some kind of badge that is awarded if you spell every word correctly and use every term in the correct way. Some people seem to respond to a particular thread just to correct the OP with their spelling or punctuation or grammar. WHY? Not everyone has a masters in english. Not everyone is awesome with spelling or grammar. Is it some way of making yourself look better than the next person?

OP posts:

' We are all sooooo nice for the sake of political correctness but jump on the next woman who may not have a university level of english reading/writing.'

You don't need an English degree to be able to write using good grammar and spelling. Although I gather from an admissions tutor friend that many applicants to study English aren't secure in the above.

Cage. Swinging? Is this a lightly disguised attempt to bring back hanging?

ThisIsANiceCage · 31/05/2011 10:48

Too good for us them, Scousy.

usualsuspect · 31/05/2011 10:50

This is a chat forum though Abra1d ,not an application for a Job or university

Its more like having a conversation

I am the only person visualising Beesimo as one of those women dressed in a hopsack skirt with a full length pinny and a mop-cap and ruddy cheeks, stirring a huge cauldron on an open fire, with a pig's head on a scrubbed wooden block, circa 1650?

Bucharest · 31/05/2011 10:53

I'm too busy with the maypole and the dwarf to fit anything else disturbing in my head at the moment.

FellatioNelson · 31/05/2011 10:55

PMSL - yes TIANC I did mean hyper-vigilant! It's that darned auto-pilot brain and the Law of Sod at work again. Grin

ScousyFogarty · 31/05/2011 10:56

Usualsuspect. Well said, it can be a layed back forum or a serious discussion. But NOT a spelling or grammar test.

FellatioNelson · 31/05/2011 10:58

SF Good job really. Grin

generalhaig · 31/05/2011 10:59

the only time I've ever corrected someone is when they kept on going on and on about how bright their child was and they just had to go to a 'grammer' or 'independant' school ... it was the repetition of both spelling mistakes, combined with the belief in superiority of said child that grated ... I felt bad about it afterwards Grin

FellatioNelson · 31/05/2011 11:06

So have we still not had an explanation on dwarfing then?

maypole1 · 31/05/2011 11:07

generalhaig but i still don't understand why if someone is saying how bright their child is why you need to correct their spelling

just because someone cant spell its still doesn't mean their child is no bright so i am not sure how you would be taking the person down a peg

i would understand if someone was boasting about their child and the child couldn't spell then fair enough but

but how bright or educated a parent is has no bearing on how educated or bright their child is is its all a bit odd really

Psammead · 31/05/2011 11:11

maypole1 at 9:40:55 you mentioned dwarfing. I assume this was an auto correct failure. What was it you meant to say?

usualsuspect · 31/05/2011 11:12

But what about the dwarf,Maypole?

maypole1 · 31/05/2011 11:15

BucharestTue 31-May-11 09:41:51

What the Jeff is dwarfing when it's at home?

Pots and kettles I'd say Maypole with regard to the swearing.....

i was simply asking Bucharest about her post was not sure what she was on about and as for psammead i prsume its your type the thread is aimed at

Also posters who are loosing their argument start swearing some dwarfing and correcting spelling in the same post To me that shows less intelligence than bad grammar

beesimo · 31/05/2011 11:18

fellatioNelson

Do you have the seeing eye I have this very morn been making the brawn up which does indeed involve pigheads and cauldrons.

The only part you can't eat of a pig is it's squeak, waste not want not

FellatioNelson · 31/05/2011 11:18

Actually maypole that's a good point. A common scenario for smug SPaG correction is a chippy state school advocate trying to get one over on someone who went to private school, or who would like to send their child to private school. The inference is 'who do you think you are being all elitist when you were clearly born an oik?'

Surely if you know were not taught good grammar and you suffered some of the more wacky and experimental literacy teaching techniques of the 70s and 80s (as many of us in bog-standard state education did) and you know you grew up in an environment where the local accent/dialect made it difficult to grasp those skills on your own, then that in itself is often a driver to want better for your own children.

Bucharest · 31/05/2011 11:18

My post was in response to your earlier one.

maypole1 · 31/05/2011 11:21

right bucharest i would of been a bot more helpful if you put this up before i wasn't sure what you were going on about.

i have no clue what i went their sorry must of been distracted mid sentence.

FellatioNelson · 31/05/2011 11:22

Shock For real Beesimo? Listen to her:

'I have this very morn' been making the brawn up'

She's a bona-fide Medieval Nigella.

Psammead · 31/05/2011 11:23

maypole look at the post above the one you just quoted. Your post. Where you mention dwarfing. People keep asking you what you meant. They will keep asking until you tell them.

I am trying to help you for fuck's sake, but posting the time at which you made the comment to help you find it.

If you bother to actually read what I posted originally at 10:32:01 you will also realise you are accusing the wrong person.

Again, as I said, I assume your refernce to dwarfing is an auto-correct fail or something similar from an iPad or iPhone.

Please read my post and don't assume I am calling you thick, because that's really pissed me off. Much worse than poor SPaG are people who don't bother to read and go off half cocked.
