Why do people enjoy picking others up on their spelling or grammar

TakeMeDrunkImHome · 31/05/2011 01:29

i have noticed this a LOT here, and i am fairly new. Is there some kind of badge that is awarded if you spell every word correctly and use every term in the correct way. Some people seem to respond to a particular thread just to correct the OP with their spelling or punctuation or grammar. WHY? Not everyone has a masters in english. Not everyone is awesome with spelling or grammar. Is it some way of making yourself look better than the next person?

OP posts:

Any old people will do.

Anyway, you asked me why I thought what I did and I explained. People really can write what they like, how i like; but, when it is to me, then mistakes genuinely annoy me, the more so if the writer seems to "reckon" him/herself as something of an intellectual giant.

It probably just means I'm a horrible person.

And I mainly came on here because I get quite separately annoyed by mis-translations (usually computer-generated) so thought it might be helpful all round if I gave a bit of input on what "lupus in fabula" means.

The stuff that's actually relevant to the thread was a bti of an aside, really.

doley · 31/05/2011 15:09

maypole that is why I asked .:)

Like I said though,I know you are passionate about education ,I don't want to have to skip over yours (or any others) posts .

Personally, I wouldn't like to have my post ignored because of crazy punctuation .

I am open to all other reasons to ignore me thoughWink

MIFLAW · 31/05/2011 15:09

"what they like, how THEY like" of course

usualsuspect · 31/05/2011 15:13

I never use full stops on MN

Its more about my sometimes drunk crap typing skills than anything else though

Or because I cba when I'm using a chat forum for a bit of light relief from the RL

maypole1 · 31/05/2011 15:16

Thanks doley I am not really that bothered by it all I know were I am at in terms of spelling lucky my job dose not require it.

And my oh is very clever so i guess that makes up for it all

Altinkum

I don't think you've actually read anything I've said apart from that last post.

Hey ho.

doley · 31/05/2011 15:21

altinkum so lack of punctuation is a style of writingConfused

It has to be said that even the posters with fantastic educations can be misunderstood right ?

I have been talking to maypole today ,but I am not pulling her posts apart ,nor am I aiming this at her .

It seems un-fair that someone(anyone) who makes interesting posts should be skipped over because the post is impossible to read :)

I am not an academic (obviously) I would just prefer a few full stops ,and the ocasional comma !

MIFLAW · 31/05/2011 15:26

To be crystal clear (before I become further embroiled in an argument I don't want):

if someone posts something full of spelling mistakes, I do tend to wonder why.

I would contend that you can often tell, from the context and structure of the piece, if this is down to dyslexia (in which case, fair do's) or to poor spelling and grammar.

The latter will tend to annoy me in the same way that some people get annoyed by clashing colours; it jars on my eyes.

But I would only typically comment if someone typed (as they sometimes do), "you can't beet grammer schools I went to a grammer and it was excellant, all the teachers where excellent, why can't more young people read and write like I leared to do at my grammer school!?!?!???!!!!" or "the OP is clearly uneducated, why cant she spell, spelling is to important not to bother."

So there you go.

doley · 31/05/2011 15:30

MIFLAW Grin

I agree .

maypole1 · 31/05/2011 15:36

Oh dear I guess we have come full circle some people feel the need to nit pick at peoples posts and some don't

MIFLAW · 31/05/2011 16:05

maypole

i feel no such need unless the content also annoys me - many posts on this very thread are ripe for a "frank critique" of spelling and grammar but I have, as you will agree, refrained from offering one because the posters are not on any particular high horse.

beesimo · 31/05/2011 16:13

I have just been given 16 pound of over ripe raspberries would anyone like to help me make some jam?

You lot could arguify for ever and a day and it matters not a tinkers fart!

B's last word is to say yes its is nice to be clever but it is more important to be wise, think on

MIFLAW · 31/05/2011 16:30

"B's last word is to say yes its is nice to be clever but it is more important to be wise, think on" - I am at a loss as to what that could actually mean.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/05/2011 16:53

Beesimo... I'll come and help you. Grin

MIFLAW... Perhaps it's a variation on "I never did mind about the little things", perhaps not, but I do think that Beesimo is very wise. She's been busy doing things and the pedants have been revolting, as usual.

JoanofArgos · 31/05/2011 16:57

Is it 'think on' that you don't get? Being Northern, I say it lots Wink, but it might be less familiar further afield!

beesimo · 31/05/2011 17:40

Wise people know you don't fatten a pig by keep weighing it.

Clever people don't always get that.

'think on' means consider the point I'm making/think what your doing or saying

JoanofArgos · 31/05/2011 17:55

I know, I like 'think on'! Grin

skyebluepink · 31/05/2011 18:45

Is there supposed to be an apostrophe in fair dos / fair do's?

FellatioNelson · 31/05/2011 19:09

I think it is one of those few occasions where the jury is genuinely out on whether an apostrophe is warranted or not, because the word 'dos' is a bit of an anomaly and doesn't read as it should. Technically I suspect it may be wrong, but practically I think it may be acceptable. In fact things like that give me such angst that I would have scrapped it and written fair enough instead!

ILoveYouToo · 31/05/2011 19:58

"nijinsky... Would that be why you don't differentiate between 'write' and 'wright', then?"

Grin

nijinsky "LyingWitch indeed. Mea culpa. But there is a difference between a typo and a spelling mistake."
That isn't a typo; it's a confusion of meaning and a spelling error. Confused
