to think it totally unfair to bawl at your bored child when you are spending the day shopping?

I nearly welled up at the unfairness earlier today when I saw a mum yelling at her toddler who was making a fuss in the pushchair while she tried on endless garments in the changing room. OK so very judgy of me, she clearly has no-one to leave him with but why couldn't she see that that was NOT going to be a bundle of laughs for him and obviously he was going to start misbehaving? AIBU to think some people haven't any empathy for their kids at times!

Gateway of wonder is my new favourite phrase

usualsuspect · 27/05/2011 21:53

ShirleyKnot · 27/05/2011 21:53

This whole thread is a Gateway Of Wonder to be honest.

I always yearned for small private rooms where I could chastise/thrash offspring without some do-gooder telling me not to.Soundproof obviously.Wink

YABU. The woman needs to have clothes and she may have no-one to leave the toddler with. She could have unstrapped him from his pushchair but then she may have been embarassed when she had to chase him around the shop in her bra and pants. If you 'welled up' at the sight of a bored toddler then I think the issue is with you and not her.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 27/05/2011 21:57

I am actually very heartened by the number of people on here who are not all "think about the children!"

OP- what do you think the mum in question ought to have been doing with the child (I am genuinely interested, not being sarky)? Are mums allowed to do anything for themselves, or are we all just meant to spend our time making egg-box animals and teaching french?

MrsSchadenfreude · 27/05/2011 22:00

YABU. Children need to learn that it is not all about them and to be bored sometimes. My childhood was stiflingly, yawningly dull sometimes - going to visit Auntie Edie, being dragged round MFI at Wembley or Brentford Nylons. Yes, it is dull, but it's not going to kill them.

usualsuspect · 27/05/2011 22:03

God yes ..I still remember the visits to my aunt Adas ...boring as fuck

heleninahandcart · 27/05/2011 22:04

wowwow your posts sums the whole thing up nicely IMO

Haven't clothes shopped for years with a toddler, and I usually did it alone, but when I did he liked it or lumped it. I had a life too.
He's nearly 16 now and just as bad, but at least I can send him off to HMV or KFC.

usualsuspect · 27/05/2011 22:10

I well up when my vodka bottle is empty

likingthespring · 27/05/2011 22:10

Yeah ok but OP talking about a toddler here. I think that's different.

sourpastels · 27/05/2011 22:15

That is the reason I love how my 2and half year old loves clothes shopping with me :o . She even tells me what is nice (which most of the time I would not use as a rag but never mind) she also tells me if I look nice in the clothes I try on :o or if I look fat/ugly etc (the times I take no notice of her, I don't wear them again ) The one thing I am trying to teach her is not to open the changing room curtains whilst I am in the middle of trying clothes on usually showing my big fat ass off to the world when she does it

So anyone who sees me changing in a changing room do not do a thread about it on here as it is embarrassing enough when my dd laughs and says "the lady seen your bum mummy" at the top of her voice Blush. It is as to make sure everyone sees Blush

Madamdeathstare have you seen the opening credits of Narnia - the lion the witch and the wardrobe (the other ones are shit) ?
