DH just told me about some mates of his, who play the very geeky, but usually fun and silly, LARP game (it's basically dressing up in funny costumes and acting out fake battles ... as geeky as could be and makes me roll my eyes, but this is beside the point ...).

Anyway, DH's mate apparently walked through a major train station carrying a shedload of replica weapons. Not covered in a bag, not having cleared it with the station staff first ... just wandered around carrying what looked extremely like real guns.

The police grabbed him, quite hard, and cuffed him and questioned him, and gave him a lecture. He is now cross because he has a bruise where the policeman grabbed him.

Is it me? Or is this just crushingly stupid and rude? I heard about it and was thinking WTF even before I heard that this guy actually considers himself to have been molested by the police.

I know this is an odd AIBU but I had to ask someone to share my WTF face ... and I do feel awful for the police who must have got a horrible scare!

well if it's on show it might be because it could be perceived as a threat, like an armed bank robber with a fake gun is still an armed bank robber (until the weapon is identified as fake) and would be treated as such. Or something like that. Maybe?

Mumofaflump · 26/05/2011 12:55

I'm in a re-enactment group, one of the two main English Civil War ones and I have to have a firearms license for my replica musket. It's a lenght of pipe glued to a lump of wood... Still have to have a license for it.

We are not allowed to walk around in public (unless on an organised event with police clearance) with our swords, pikes, muskets etc. Anyone found doing so risks losing their membership.

seedlessgrape · 26/05/2011 12:57

What a total twat! We are currently on a mid/high security level (following the events in Pakistan and also the current US Presidential visit) and surely it's common sense to avoid anything like this.

He sounds like a total wally brain!

SuePurblybilt Thu 26-May-11 12:06:17 "Bet he did it on purpose, showing off and just dying for someone to comment on them. Knobber."

Got to agree. On what planet would/should this not attract police attention? To genuinely not anticipate this, you'd have to be too stupid to put one foot in front of the other.

I live in Ireland and know people who do a lot of reenacting, supply weapons etc. in films. They have loads of paperwork etc. especially if transporting weapons between Northern Ireland and the republic. I think it is illegal to import replica weapons into Ireland.

peeriebear · 26/05/2011 13:08

What a silly arse. DH is a Larper and even though the weapons are often far from realistic (hammers with giant heads the size of anvils, green double ended spears, clubs made from monster heads on spikes etc) he always puts them in a Big Bag. He was stopped once when he had something poking out (fnarr) but the officer was polite and had a joke with him.

CurrySpice · 26/05/2011 13:11

I thought it was illegal to carry a replica weapon as well - or have I made that up?

helenthemadex · 26/05/2011 13:28

what a complete knobhead he was very lucky that he only got a bruise

OTheHugeManatee · 26/05/2011 13:33

HAHAHAHAHA

That'll learn him. Grin

TheMonster · 26/05/2011 13:37

Stupid, and a waste of police time.

RitaBix · 26/05/2011 14:59

Crazy fool
The police have shot people dead carrying chair legs before now

he is lucky

Isntitironic · 26/05/2011 15:19

What a muppet. Yes, I believe it is illegal to carry replica weapons - I know threatening someone with a fake weapon is just as illegal as threatening with a real one. Our self-defence instructor at school gave us a stern lecture on the subject and now I'm cautious about even carrying sewing scissors or a craft knife, which are always in cases and well buried in my handbag!

LadyOfTheManor · 26/05/2011 15:23

He's lucky the ARU (armed response unit) didn't get wind of it first and shoot him in the shoulder.

It is not illegal to carry replicas, it is illegal to use a replica in a threatening way where the victim may consider it to be real.

I'd rather he get a bruise, instead of the police being too PC and one day some idiot carrying real weapons shoots people.

LadyOfTheManor · 26/05/2011 15:24

My father deals arms internationally as his little side hobby, and hates people like this causing uproar which discredits his line of business.

Ormirian · 26/05/2011 15:33

Sorry lady? He's an international arms dealer and he is worried about someone discrediting him?

LadyOfTheManor · 26/05/2011 15:35

He's worried about peoples' irresponsible attitudes to weapons discrediting his line of business;

example;

Illegal fire arms certificates
Replicas
Sawn offs
Illegal importation of illegal guns

etc

Weapons cause fear in a lot of people, and dicks like in the OP, don't help the situation for those that deal with them in a controlled environment.

I'm anti-guns (legal or otherwise) FWIW.

LadyOfTheManor · 26/05/2011 15:36

People like this implied the guy carrying the replicas...

blackeyedsusan · 26/05/2011 18:03

mmm could have been more than a tazer... daft idiot...

comedycentral · 26/05/2011 23:51

What an idiot, he could have been shot by the police. A man got shot years ago because they thought the table leg he was carrying was a sawn off shot gun...can't remember his name.

MuthaHubbard · 26/05/2011 23:57

serves him right - how are us mere mortals supposed to know they are replica weapons?? police receiving a call from a member of the public stating they've seen a chap walking round with a gun/knife/machete are going to treat it as real until they are able to establish otherwise.....and he was very lucky not to have been tasered or have been surrounded by an ARU.

he may well yet be charged with something.....

LaurieFairyCake · 27/05/2011 00:00

Nice to see some twat's won the Darwin award this year Hmm

what a fucking idiot, seriously, who does that???

Fecklessdizzy · 27/05/2011 00:04

If they're realistic enough to look like the genuine articlel I think it might be ... DP has a geek chum who'se into this sort of stuff and I'm pretty sure he's been cautioned for whipping his piece out in t'pub ( fnar, fnar )

Your twerp's lucky they only bruised him ...

Fecklessdizzy · 27/05/2011 00:08

Shit ... Didn't realise there was a page 2! Sorry! Makes no sense at all now ... Blush

giraffesCantZumba · 27/05/2011 00:09
