For not wanting to lie for DP to his family?

Lorita · 24/05/2011 14:05

DP and I have been together around a year and I have never met any of his family or friends. I let it go but now its coming up to a year together I've pushed the issue and only now he's admitted he hasn't let me meet anyone as he's lied to everyone about my name as he was embarrassed by my real name and didn't want everyone taking the piss so told everyone I was called Angie. Now he's saying he'll let me meet them if I promise to go along with it and not let on about my real name but I'm really struggling with this, why should I lie?? but if I don't it's going to make him look so silly.
AIBU to be really angry about this? he's making out that I'm over-thinking it but long term I don't see how I can keep up this lie, it's bound to come out sooner or later and then I'll look as bad as him.

the biblical spelling is Dorcas, yes , but Dorkus is a perfectly acceptable phonetic variant

ForeverNamechanging · 24/05/2011 14:34

I'm named after a card game and have a cousin called thorn. Theres worse out there

If he is this petty i wouldn't bother with the twat

xStarGirl · 24/05/2011 14:34

"Dorkus"? Did your parents, by any chance, not know how to spell Dorcas, which is a genuine, and quite nice, name?

Can sort of see why he would want to use a different name, but why not use a pet-name or whatever? Weird.

Thingumy · 24/05/2011 14:34

Dorcus I've heard of.

See my link below.

I think it's a wind up.

nickelbabe · 24/05/2011 14:34

the full passage

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 24/05/2011 14:35

According to MN I sound like a deep south beauty pageant contestant, who has gone over the hill and now works in a diner

squeakytoy · 24/05/2011 14:35

I think it is really rude to take the piss out of anyones name actually.. it is not as if they had any choice in the matter!

Yes Spoc and Fabby... I am looking at you two as well! puts on stern face

nickelbabe · 24/05/2011 14:35

(sorry, I got it the wrong way round - Dorcas/Dorkus is the greek)

scurryfunge · 24/05/2011 14:36

Dorcus means gazelle.

BooyHoo · 24/05/2011 14:37

i agree, how rude to ridicule someone over their name. she didn't choose it. it was chosen for her in memory of her grandmother. how immature to take the piss.

MrSpoc · 24/05/2011 14:38

Sorry squeakytoy i have been shamed.

I still think this is a wind up. And come on how can anyone say its a nice name??? I like the name Thorn though as it is a name out of a book I am currently reading (Tad Williams Siege)

Thingumy · 24/05/2011 14:39

I'll await the 'update'.

Still think it's a pisstake Hmm

LDNmummy · 24/05/2011 14:40

OK, I won't lie, Dorkus is quite unusual, but it has a lovely meaning, It means Gazelle I believe.

Angie is a rediculous substitute and he should have been honest with them from day one as he has made your name far more of an issue than it should be.

If he had just been honest and said "her name is Dorkus" and let them get used to it, it would probably be perfectly fine by now.

He is still an immature twit and I think you should show him up by meeting his family and telling them your real name.

And I think Dorkus is probably only unusual in certain countries, it sounds like a name you would find abroad.

Sn0wflake · 24/05/2011 14:41

Thingumy - yes it does look like a wind up. I went to school with a Dorcas....nobody teased her.

pink4ever · 24/05/2011 14:41

Well I can say it is is nice name as I really like it! prefer the spelling Dorcas though. Was one of my names for dd but dh vetoed itAngry.
If this thread is real then dump his sorry arse.

LDNmummy · 24/05/2011 14:41

And this may be a wind up but hey ho Grin

Sn0wflake · 24/05/2011 14:43

I always thought it was quite a posh name.

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 24/05/2011 14:44

I've only ever heard of the spelling Dorcas (i think one of the brides in 7 brides for 7 brothers is called that).

My name was the Bain of my life in school and if someone who was supposed to like me took the piss I'd never speak to or see them again.

Casey76 · 24/05/2011 14:50

Tell us your name...then we can decide if he is wrong or not!!!!!!

Seriously this person is deluded and has issues.....

Be free......tell him to fuck off

FabbyChic · 24/05/2011 14:53

Thing are you thinking this is a troll thread?

FabbyChic · 24/05/2011 14:54

Squeeks not taking the piss, but can understand his er um concern. Think the thread is a pisstake though.

scurryfunge · 24/05/2011 14:55

If it is, it is quite a funny one.

Thingumy · 24/05/2011 14:56

Not one for trollhunting but....

Anyway, lets see if the OP comes back with more info.

madonnawhore · 24/05/2011 14:59

He's a shallow twat and his family must be slightly mentally subnormal if they can't cope with the fact that someone has an unusual sounding name.

Are you really sure you want anything to do with them all?

MorrisZapp · 24/05/2011 15:01

Aye right. 'Dorkus', lol.

Good stuff OP.
