whilst flicking through some ones new photos on facebook, a picture of their 3 week old baby asleep, curled up in his moses basket... with a staffy dog...

well, am I?

OP posts:
TheMonster · 23/05/2011 19:53

My staffies would never have fitted into the moses basket.

ShirleyKnot · 23/05/2011 19:54

Faverolle - HA HA HA HA HAAAA

TheMonster · 23/05/2011 19:54

I don't like Bono either.

shineoncrazydiam0nd · 23/05/2011 19:54

Well, I own a dog and I say YANBU...

Not because it is a staffy but because the idea of putting a baby next to a dog makes me go bleugh - and not from a potential biting point of view, purely a hygiene one. Think it is kind of revolting.

TheMonster · 23/05/2011 19:56

Yeah, if a dog licks a baby it can get worms. And there's nothing worse than a dog with worms...

faverolles · 23/05/2011 19:56

Elf - my jrt is very protective of "her" family, but has never lashed out at anyone. When anyone holds the baby, she sits and watches closely.
I suppose it's like beertricks said - I know my own dogs.
My Labrador has only been protective of me once. When she met a scarecrow Hmm. She barked at it until I went close to it, and she knew it was ok.

MrsRhettButler · 23/05/2011 19:56

My dogs won't fit either bodyofeeyore.....

My poor baby will have to learn to sleep by herself.... Or, I could put her in the dog cage, now there's an idea

PiaThreeTimes · 23/05/2011 19:57

Staffies are known as Nanny Dogs in the US, as they're naturally very good around children.

Abusive owners = abusive dogs.

TheMonster · 23/05/2011 19:58

I would worry that the wicker nature of a moses basket would scratch my dogs and hurt them.

tooposh · 23/05/2011 19:58

I think some of the posters above have been too flippant. Baby and dog could come to serious harm this way (first the baby, and then the dog through being put down).

I have always had dogs but there is NO WAY I would be happy with a dog in a basket with a 3 week old baby. The dog can have been perfect until the day when it has earache/ a nightmare/ and mistakes the baby for a chew toy. It is utterly irresponsible no matter what the past history of the dog. Dog and baby should be gradually introduced over a matter of months so that it is possible to see the dog's reaction (? jealousy) in every situation before leaving them alone together.

The RSPCA website says:

"Sometimes long-established family pets may feel jealous of a new baby. Dogs and cats in particular are going to be curious. Always introduce your pets gently to a new baby. Try to give them special attention whenever you can, so they know you still care about them.

No matter how kind and trustworthy your pet may be.............[d]on't put your child at risk by leaving it alone with an animal."

Simples.

I don't imagine the RSPCA would condone a baby and a staffy in a moses basket together. Oh, the breed is relevant only insofar as staffs are bred to bite and then hold on with enormously strong jaws. I have had staffies and am also familiar with them being great family pets btw. Having said that, I wouldn't condone any breed of dog in a basket with a newborn but a staffy would kill more efficiently should it choose to (perish the thought). In short, why take the risk when there is no need?

TheMonster · 23/05/2011 20:01

Flippant? Moi?

tooposh, I think people are taking the mickey...

PeterSpanswick · 23/05/2011 20:04

My dogs LOVE children.. But they couldn't eat a whole one (runs)

RidinOnAPig · 23/05/2011 20:04

YANBU.

Its not hygienic or safe.

tethersend · 23/05/2011 20:06

Would this be a good time to resurrect my plans for an ark on which we could put all dogs and float them out to sea?

If not now, then can someone give me the nod when it is?

Cheers.

Glitterknickaz · 23/05/2011 20:08

What Scurryfunge said Grin

ManicAnnie · 23/05/2011 20:08

Newborn in basket wit dog. Grim. Just totally fucking stupid. Some people are bonkers.

shineoncrazydiam0nd · 23/05/2011 20:09

Yes I think flippant too.

I think ' Eugh!' at babies being shoved near dogs faces. Where not two minutes previously they were licking their arses or licking dead rabbit from their chops after a long walk. the dog that is, not the baby!

Bleeeeeee ......

shineoncrazydiam0nd · 23/05/2011 20:10

I totally think the dog should be around the baby ... but to put them in together?

Don't be daft!

SpringHeeledJack · 23/05/2011 20:14

tethers!!!!

Shock
cryhavoc · 23/05/2011 20:15

There isn't a photo of my DD when she was newborn without Boydog's head hovering nearby (attached to his body, obviously). He would have loved to have gotten in with her, but as someone has already pointed out, Rottweilers just don't fit in Moses baskets.

We do, however, have some lovely photos of DD asleep in the basket with the two rotties, curled up in the middle of them.

OP, you were probably looking at a staged photo. Or do the people whose photos you were looking at strike you as the type to leave a dog and a baby asleep together? We've got tons of rottie/baby photos that were actually very safe when they were taken but would probably make people who don't know our dogs gasp in horror (or run to AIBU).

OnlyWantsOne · 23/05/2011 20:18

FWIW I have dogs, have always had dogs,...

OP posts:
DontCallMePeanut · 23/05/2011 20:23

its still an animal with teeth and claws IMHO

No shit sherlock... Hmm

But by that reasoning; KEEP THE MOTHER AWAY FROM THE BABY! She has teeth and nails, y'know?

Honeydragon · 23/05/2011 20:28
