shave her legs?

My DD is 11 nearly 12 (youngest in her year) and she is about the only one who doesn't, her legs are really hairy (although she is blonde) and she says she feels conscious when she wears a skirt and bare legs.

I can't see any harm in letting her (with removal cream?).

AIBU?

I saw let her do it but offer to help. My DS regrets shaving her legs above the knee, though so maybe just do knees down if she is blonde anyway.

heliumballoons · 22/05/2011 19:59

Why??

Bonsoir · 22/05/2011 20:04

I will let my DD wax her legs at a salon as soon as she feels self-conscious about hair.

slightlyunbalanced · 22/05/2011 20:06

Just feel a bit dissapointed at Beeismo's hopes for her DD's.....

AngryFeet · 22/05/2011 20:07

Personally as soon as DD wants to do it I will let her. I will advise that she tries waxing as I ended up with very thick dark hair all up my legs due to shaving and wish I had waxed from the start. If she doesn't want to I will let her shave or use cream though. 11 is not too young IMO.

CallMeBubblesEverybodyDoes · 22/05/2011 20:09

I use cold wax strips to wax my 12 year old DD's legs every 3 or 4 months. Her hair is quite blonde but she has tanned skin so the hairs were noticeable. I said she could shave if she wanted to but as I wax my own legs she asked me to do hers too.

bigTillyMint · 22/05/2011 20:10

So far DD(nearly 12) hasn't asked about it Smile

bibbitybobbityhat · 22/05/2011 20:10

Why can people not put the full question in the thread title
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

RockStockandTwoOpenBottles · 22/05/2011 20:17

My older DDs have been shaving/waxing their legs since about 11/12. I think I was probably about the same age. DD3 will most likely be the same I suppose.

TattyDevine · 22/05/2011 20:18

Beesimo do you live in a house or a caravan? Just wondering...

goingmadinthecountry · 22/05/2011 20:21

When it's appropriate. As a mum of 4 I'd question the "allow" a "child" of 11/12 of the op, because I know very well that if you stop them they will either do something behind your back badly or start keeping secrets from you.

Be open, laugh with them and realise 12 is pretty grown up to your dd.

FabbyChic · 22/05/2011 20:25

Dont let her use a BIC, they tear your legs to shreds. Buy the Lady Gillette razors they are really good. Go in the bathroom with her you shave one leg and let her shave the other.

ohhappyday · 22/05/2011 20:25

Beesimo - I read a lot of your posts and have often wondered are you from they gypsy or traveller community. I love they way you chat in your local dialect than think you sound quite a character - in a good way

I would love my DDS to go out in the world and explore a bit as myself and my sisters never had the chance but THEY don't want to they love their lives here. They are addict to wedding magazines I have tried to tell them not to get too serious about anyone until they are in their 20s ect as well but all I get is you were 16!!

If I hadn't let them have their 'doggy babies' I would be a granny by now the oldest 2 are like a couple of broody hens. Just like I was in fact!

Dunoon · 22/05/2011 20:30

If my child wanted to look like KP I would attempt all methods of legal persuasion to stop her.

As a hairy mary who was told by her mother and older sister not to be silly when I asked them to show me how to shave my legs I will be discussing the subject fully and frankly with my DDs when the time comes and giving them any istruction they want. I am wondering if waxing would be better as the regrowth will get less and less as they get older.[?]

slightlyunbalanced · 22/05/2011 20:32

Maybe bad choice of word - I am aware of teenage creatures I have worked with them for 6 yrs Grin

I'm wondering where on earth beesimo lives as this stuff about people not daring to lay a hand on them and having their wings clipped after marriage sounds very strange.

Regarding the OP I'd say she should do it as soon as she feels self conscious.

beesimo · 22/05/2011 20:57

My Grandma on my Mams side was a Romany whose family dealt in horses she married my Grandad who was a butcher against massive opposition from both sides a love match. Both sides of the family came round when first baby was born a boy, by the time Mam was born she was the 7 th baby they had 4 shops and property ect as butchering was a good trade then. We've have always had plenty of money as all my extended family are hard working. Mam married a land wealthy money poor farmer and I am one of 5 we always lived 'well' but not flashy'

I didn't go to school much after 12 because I didn't want to so I wasn't made to. Mam got me a job in one of my Uncles butcher shops when I was 16 when I met DH. We married in a Catholic Church but he also had to take the Romany blood oath regarding me and my family the night before the offical wedding.

I live a bit too flashy now on a large farm property I have never lived in a caravan but I could go up to any Romany and ask them for help and they would hear 'like calling to like' and help me. I didn't have another bother with my DHs family or friends when we married up because frankly I was a bloody good catch!

TattyDevine · 22/05/2011 20:59

Thanks for answering my cheeky question Beesimo. Your culture/heritage sounds interesting. Thanks for sharing Smile

heliumballoons · 22/05/2011 21:13

beesimo your culture/ heritage is so interesting. I have to say It explains a lot of your posts and 'beliefs' you have about parenting/ families etc. People can say what they like about travellers but they IMO/E work hard at family and marraige.

I agree with tatty thanks for sharing.

ohhappyday · 22/05/2011 21:16

Oh Beesimo that was a great story as Tatty said thanks for sharing it. I have a great deal of time and respect for the Romany Gypsies. Many are born again Christians and have great stories to tell. There is so little understanding of this amazing culture. I know a Romany woman who used to go around various churches etc giving her testimony. There will be many souls in heaven because of her. Was your Dad Romany? I believed it was highly unusual for a gorga person to be accepted in the culture. Sorry to hijack the thread.

beesimo · 22/05/2011 21:30

My Mam was what you would call half Romany my Father was a farmer so I would prehaps be classed as quarter Romany by you.

But that isn't how I class myself it is like black people don't say I'm 3 quaters white do they? I am not a mongrel I am a proud Romany woman because I keep our ways 'never forgive a enemy never forget a friend' is one of the main ones.

Although I acknowledge and respect my Fathers blood line as well.

ohhappyday · 22/05/2011 21:38

Thanks Beesimo - wish we could share a cup of tea and a blether. Hope I didnt offend you asking too many questions that so was not my intention. Love your pride in your culture.

beesimo · 22/05/2011 21:46

ohhappyday

No offence taken

good night to you all

startail · 22/05/2011 21:59

I've just bought her a decent electric razor, but like me I suspect she prefers disposable razors and shaving foam. There are plenty of both in the cupboard.
She started getting teased at about 12.5.
At the moment she's wearing tights to school, but I've said I'll give her a hand making sure her legs are shaved and putting on a touch of fake tan if it gets hotter (Some of the girls in her class bitch about the slightest inperfection)
