to think people shouldn't give out legal advice on here when they don't know what they're talking about

I have read SO MANY threads on here with posted giving out advice as if it is gospel and it is totally wrong.

I've had to clear up nonsense on two threads in as many days.

Why do people think this is ok to do????!!!!!! It's dangerous!

PR47Bridge (?) has been very helpful to me when Ive asked questions on here re a court order and non payment. Obviously I also checked online and with the court but he gave me the initial outline of what to do and really helped me.

I always provide fabulous advice....Grin

loverboys · 22/05/2011 19:04

i think people are smart enough to realise this isnt a legal centre - its a SOCIAL FORUM, people can gleem what they want from the experience noted on here in great detail. its just that nothing more.

"I hate doing it but I now always say - I am a barrister e.g. I am right!!!! "

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

catinthehat2 · 22/05/2011 19:32

If a poster said "I like to pretend assert I am a barrister on line because I have various personality issues that make it hard for me to deal with real life" I am sure it would be taken more seriously Grin

OK, everybody, I've decided I'm a barrister and everything I say is right.

Anyone got any legal q's they want to run past me? I'll come up with an answer in sentences & paragraphs with various bits of legal terminology. Guaranteed to be very convincing

Form an orderly queue!

You know how Stephen Fry is a stupid person's idea of a clever person?

Well, MN takes it a stage further.

Every few days, someone pops up who is a non-legal professional's idea of a legal professional.

A1980 · 22/05/2011 19:37

YANBU it drives me crazy. People seem to think they know everything having had no legal education or employment.

The employment law drives me crazy too. It's a minefield. I am a solicitor but I have a speciality. I wouldnt' dare give out legal advice on a matter I am not familiar with, especially employment law.

The medical advice is more stupid though. One of the posts being, my daughter has burned her arm, what can I do to keep her arm under the cold tap......! Ummm, would it be ridiculous to suggest you stop typing on the computer and hold her arm there?!

K999 · 22/05/2011 19:40

dandy....can you use "their" and "there" correctly please? Grin

catinthehat2 · 22/05/2011 19:41

can I add 'sheesh' as well for extra legal gravitas

BooBearBoo · 22/05/2011 19:42

"I'm a heart surgeon therefore I know how to do a heart transplant"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Confused Confused

Look, I am embarrassed I said that now. It came out terribly. Quite clearly what I meant was I am right on the law. I am. Get over it. It was "out of the people giving you advice on here, I am the one who is right". That is what I actually meant.

I do know what I am talking about. Just like a heart surgeon or whatever. Would anyone laugh at them if they said they were right about something to do with hearts??! I certainly wouldnt!

The second comment somebody cited above was mega tongue in cheek. Quite clearly from the big grin smiley immeidately following it.

I actually spent a long time trying to HELP people today and yesterday. Time I didnt have to spend. But ho hum.

I wouldn't take their word as gospel on an internet forum. People say they are all sorts on here and other sites - some are who they say they are, some definitely are not. If I came to see you in RL in your place of work that would be a different matter.

LRDTheFeministDragon · 22/05/2011 19:47

But Boo, no-one knows if you're a lawyer, or a heart surgeon, or whatever. Surely you can see that?

We can't tell if you're right or wrong. Of course it's annoying for you when you know you're right and others seem to be being taken more seriously ... but what do you expect on an anonymous forum?

I am really grateful when people take time to answer me on this sort of forum, and I know some people really do take a lot of trouble. But no-one is forcing you to spend 'time you don't have to spend', so why be offended about it?

I'm just trying to say you perhaps shouldn't take it so personally.

BooBearBoo · 22/05/2011 19:48

No of course not valium I agree!

Cocoflower · 22/05/2011 19:49

I must admit... I am a teeny bit suspcious of people who claim to have a high-flying full-time job but have plenty of time for a forum....

Maybe they are just super-organised.
