AIBU to think I'm not 'goulish' for visiting Auschwitz?

DH and I are going to Krakow early next year, with the intention of visiting Auschwitz and Birkenau. My Granddad's best friend was briefly imprisoned there during the war and he often spoke to us about it when we were children.

Mentioned it to a friend and she called me a Ghoul so I mentioned it to some other people and I get the impression that people think we're a bit odd.

Just wondering if it's in some way insensitive to visit?

I think as a human being, everyone has a connection to the holocaust. I am not Jewish, German, Polish or in any way related to anyone who was a direct victim or perpetrator of the evil of the holocaust but I am a member of the human race to so I feel connected anyway.

however I don't think I will ever go to Auschwitz

Good grief, I can't believe anyone has the effrontery to complain about not being able to eat at Auschwitz - a place where victims were starved to death*, FFS! How stupid do you have to be to whine about that?!

(*Those who somehow managed to avoid the chambers or dysentery or the other many and varied ways the Nazis had of exterminating Jews, political opponents, the disabled, gypsies, trade unionists, gay people etc. etc. etc.)

edam - my thoughts exactly.....

I agree edam but I think the whole point of that particular poster's contribution was simply to wind up. Unpleasant.

I haven't contributed to the thread but have found it really interesting and have been googling away reading extracts etc. Thought provoking subject OP.
