What age would you let your DC wear deordarant and which is best - she is nearly 10 and just starting to "smelly" sweat :)

You are all good mums for getting deo,

my mum never told me anything as she foudn anything to do with the body embarrassing.

So my first period I made do with wads of loo paper, leaking blood left right and centre.

And I only started buying deodorant from my pocket money when I was 13 (!), and some "helpful" girls had taken it upon themselves to spray me with deodorant every time they saw me. message received Blush. I remember my mum commenting on how perfumed I smelled, and that I was overdoing it on the deodorant..... Angry I still feel the humiliation of that, wish someone had told me BEFORE I was 13!

Morloth · 20/05/2011 10:15

Get her the salt crystal one. It is awesome, no smell at all (either from me or the product).

No chemicals and it isn't an antiperspirant either.

BendyBob · 20/05/2011 10:20

Oh Chandon how horrible for you Sad You must have been so upset and scared. How could a mother not tell her daughter about growing up and help her?

knittedbreast · 20/05/2011 10:28

ive never used the anti persperant i think i tried it once and thought it felt like spray hairspray under my arms (dont like hairspray either, bareing in mind i was an 80s child and i hope hairspray has moved on from then!)

i have always used roll on creme stuff and would encourage my daughter to use it rather than the sprays. i was told about the links between breast cancer and spray ons about 10 years ago maybe even earlier. Isnt it because the spray blocks the holes you sweat out of or something?

Im very excited by these magic health crystals mentioned, il be looking into those once ive been paid.

do they really work?to the same degree roll ons do?

how much do they cost?

Flisspaps · 20/05/2011 10:31

knitted I've posted a link from CancerResearchUK above which says there is no proven link between cancer and anti-perspirants/deodorants (apologies if you've seen it) I'm sure there are more studies out there than this one which show the same.

I do like the sound of the crystals, as I don't seem to be able to find any spray, stick or roll on which is effective. I must be a proper sweaty Betty!

Mumofjz · 20/05/2011 10:34

Mum - now that's a blast from the past :) ....just kept you wet for about an hour - i've never managed to wear a "roll on" without first standing there like an aeroplane until dry!!! :o

Cream sticks for my family all the way i think

How can a salt crystal not be a chemical? Confused

Morloth · 20/05/2011 10:47

Well yes, obviously it has salt in it. But it doesn't have any parabens or sodium lauryl sulfate or aluminum chlorohydrate fragrances or alcohol anything like that.

Presumably you know what was meant by 'no chemicals'.

SoupDragon · 20/05/2011 10:53

The phrase "no chemicals" never fails to make me giggle because it is utter nonsense. :)

And yes, I know what it means. It means "oh, we know it has that chemical in, it just doesn't have this one" :o

GrimmaTheNome · 20/05/2011 11:06

'No chemicals' means a vacuum Grin

I suppose people mean either 'no synthetic chemicals' or 'no organic chemicals' (in the proper meaning of the term). But aluminium chlorohydrate wouldn't qualify as a 'chemical' under either of those definitions. Or lead arsenide.

Coralanne · 20/05/2011 11:38

Chandon, I feel for you. That was me exactly (except for the bullying).

mrsmellow · 20/05/2011 12:37

Out of interest - why wouldn't you use an antiperspirant at that age?

ClenchedBottom · 20/05/2011 12:49

My DD has had to use a deodorant since she was 6. Yes, 6 - the week she turned 6, actually Shock Sad

She was running around, it was a hot day and there was a strange niff - after blaming DH for a while Shock I realised it was DD. We freaked a little, as thought it might lead to precocious puberty (have I just made that phrase up? - YKWIM, where puberty starts really really early) but a little reseach (thanks MN) told us that it's not that unusual.

She uses one of the rock thingies, managed to get a travel size one, which is a better fit for small armpits. It works really well, but she needs to be reminded to use it........

I've just bought 10yo dd her first anti-perspirant today. She was bouncing about on the trampoline yesterday and complained her armpits were sweaty - I had a feel and they were.

bonkers20 · 20/05/2011 12:54

Lots of early developers on here. My DS(12) doesn't need deo yet.
Their school doesn't allow aerosols so I'd say get your DD used to a roll on.

wotss · 20/05/2011 13:10

Are there any spray on deodorants that aren't aerosols?
Apart from that tiny handbag sized Nivea one (which I don't trust DD not to use up in one go).

diddl · 20/05/2011 13:43

I think that the only pump spray ones are quite strong APs for "problem sweaters" iyswim.

Would a stick be better?

ZZZenAgain · 20/05/2011 13:47

what about those mineral sticks - are they any good? Actually I should be looking into this for my own dd

Ninxy · 20/05/2011 13:49

DD (almost 11) uses a roll-on and she still reeks by the end of the school day. She's quite tall and developing quickly. I almost wish she had underarm hairs because I find that the act of shaving is the best way to remove residual odour.

MadamDeathStare I had quite forgotten about the fact that I had an enormous abscess on the side of my breast / underarm aged about fourteen. It was enormously painful and scary. Perhaps it was caused by blocked sweat glands.
