Am I right to harshly judge the owner of a dog wearing a dress?

We live in a small market town, so hardly New York (not that that makes a difference in the judgement to me) and on the way home today we walked past a woman putting a chihuahua in her car which had on something similar to <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.dogsupplies.cz.cc/products/280x380/106_4.jpg&imgrefurl=www.dogsupplies.cz.cc/__product.asp%3FP_ID%3D106%26ZoomImage%3D5&usg=__BMciXUZLHwhhT2bHmU_LCfWn47g=&h=380&w=280&sz=14&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=UZrH3gFTdV7jSM:&tbnh=125&tbnw=101&ei=nE7VTb-GDoTZtAbpg-2bDA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dchiwawa%2Bdress%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1146%26bih%3D667%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=400&sqi=2&page=1&ndsp=28&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:0&tx=62&ty=88" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this.

The woman kept looking over at us, I thought possibly because she expected 10 YO DD1 to 'ahhhh isn't it cute' the dog, but as we've seen dogs dressed up on telly and talked about while it might be harmless, some people see it as a bit demeaning for the dog, and totally different to putting a warm coat on a dog like a greyhound that might need it, so DD1 was desperately trying to suppress her Shock face at actually seeing a dog in a dress in the flesh.

So would you say dressing up dogs in hoodys, hats, sunglasses and the like on a daily basis, is just a bit of harmless fun and the dog hasn't got a clue anyway?

Or is it freaky as fuck and the owners should be put in the pillory?

Blush I assumed you meant the dog owner was wearing a dress, not the dog.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 19/05/2011 20:04

I was wondering if you were referring to the dog or the owner, tbh!

Dog in a dress is just tacky beyond belief.

LifeIsButtercream · 19/05/2011 20:04

YABU - that was her daughter! Wink how rude hehe

Virgowoo · 19/05/2011 20:05

Prize for best title today. Grin

YANBU. I would do a cats bum mouth at anyone with a dog in a dress. Ridiculous.

Just so long as it was a nice demure dress, then fine. If it was a slutty dress then YANBU.

exexpat · 19/05/2011 20:14

Try going to Hong Kong or Japan - it's rare to see a dog that isn't wearing some kind of clothing. Or shoes Shock. I even saw some doggy swimsuits in a dog fashion boutique there Hmm.

I always look at the dogs and think I can see a look in their eyes that says 'Let me out of here! I want to run around and get muddy and be a proper dog!' But they are basically child-substitutes over there, so get dressed up and pushed around in buggies and fed doggy versions of human food.

AgentZigzag · 19/05/2011 20:15

hehe Blush sorry, just to clarify, it was a dog that had a dress on, I was too fixated on the dog to notice what the owner was wearing Grin

It was downright slutty claret Grin

And what if the owner crosses the line and forgets the dog is a animal with certain needs zukie?

Like if they don't train them properly or give them enough exercise because they've got them more as an accessory than than seriously researching before they take them home.

I was all ready to jump in all pedantic like and give you a piece of my mind about your poor grammar (assuming you meant the dog owner was wearing a dress and you'd got it wrong). I stand corrected. :o

As regards the dog's dress - blinkin' awful!!

BabyDubs Nooooooooooo! Don't do it!

AgentZigzag · 19/05/2011 20:33

I can't believe I didn't notice the title could be read two ways Grin

Apologies zukie, I was recovering from clearing up a poo explosion when I answered. I'm still a bit shaken by the experience tbh, it was a big 'un Grin

I think if I tried dressing my lab up the look of disgust would show.
Did buy a waterproof dog coat for my jack russell but he hates it.
Dogs should be dogs not dolls for saddos to dress up.

AgentZigzag · 19/05/2011 20:40

Our (mostly) black lab would be the same taylor (got a piccy of her on my profile) I think she'd eat it actually Grin

I'll admit when I see small dogs in clothes and jewellery I judge the owners as being brain dead Hmm

I really cringe for them. It looks awful, especially chihuahuas, they're really ugly ratty dogs anway. It's like having a rat in a dress and expecting people to find it endearing.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/05/2011 20:43

I think it's sad and a bit pathetic. I too wonder about owners who see their animals as accessories like so many handbags... I change my handbag often but my dogs are my dogs for all their lives and much as I think they're cute, they won't be wearing dresses or bows.

Each to their own but not when it concerns a living creature, I don't think. Hmm

Georgimama · 19/05/2011 20:44

A woman in front of me in Pets at Home the other day was buying various tacky shit outfits for her dog and kept holding them up and commenting on them as the cashier rang them up, and looking at me as if inviting me to say "oh how cute". She was lucky I didn't say "oh how abusive".

My DF has a chiw chew chiwawah small dog who has a couple of jumpers for cold weather walks. That's about it though.

I thought the dress looked sweet. I wouldn't dress a dog though.

DillyDaydreaming · 19/05/2011 20:48

Madamdeathstare that's actually very sweet. But then I am a cat person lol

DoMeDon · 19/05/2011 20:48

It's harmless fun - I had xmas jumpers for my dogs - kept them warm in the snow and they looked so cute Grin

HalfTermHero · 19/05/2011 20:50

I think that as long as the dress was a good fit and clingy in all the right places then live and let live Grin

beamel · 19/05/2011 20:50

YANBU. She is a needy attention seeker !
