here.

Okay, so it's supposed to be a very good book, but haven't these people heard of libraries?

Surely thats a typo Shock

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/05/2011 11:08

I've sold a textbook for just over that amount before; some books are expensive. It's not what they're selling for but what they sell for that is the true value though.

I've also previously spent £100 on a book that, with a little more foresight when I was a child, could have appropriated for the library and paid the £4 fine instead... Blush

scurryfunge · 19/05/2011 11:08

Sounds a bit of a piss take...who on earth would waste that sort of money?

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 19/05/2011 11:09

Bloody hell ... i thought it was going to be a first edition of something! Its not! How absurd! Have to say that lots of stuff is more expensive on Amazon than in the shops. I wanted a toy recently for a birthday and it was £15 more expensive on Amazon than the toy shop! Your example is better though! What idiot is going to pay that!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/05/2011 11:09

... that link also shows 5 used for £4.00... buy one of those instead. Grin

JiltedJohnsJulie · 19/05/2011 11:10

Think that would have required more than "a little foresight" Grin.

And not a typo, plus I've checked our library's online catalogue, was looking for a friend and the library have 4 copies.

nickelbabe · 19/05/2011 11:12

it happens a lot with Marketplace stuff, though.
Like, they reckon that a book in demand but out of print and not available elsewhere will sell for inflated prices.

Bucharest · 19/05/2011 11:12

I noticed Kate McCann's book for £142 on ebay. (I checked, and it wasn't signed, or anything)

When I sold off some uni textbooks on Amazon, one of my dictionaries was going for about £200. I put the same one on for £25 and it still never sold!

MangoTango · 19/05/2011 11:16

I've often noticed books that are out of print and not available elsewhere on sale for that sort of amount on Amazon. Surely people don't really buy them for that amount though?

SmethwickBelle · 19/05/2011 11:21

I think it is a glitch in pricing software.

There are automatic price trackers on many book sellers online catalogues, so they work out what other people are charging and add a penny or pound. On occasion due to certain demand patterns the price can bizarrely spiral out of all recognition as they get into a loop of increasing the price which makes others increase the price... so they increase the price. I don't really understand it but saw it explained on a bookseller website once.

tidybaby · 19/05/2011 13:10

Just clicked on the '3 new' link, and the 3rd price given is £225.17 plus £2.80 p+p! The seller is best bargain books Hmm

piprabbit · 19/05/2011 13:13

Try Waterstones , their delivery is free too.

LaWeasel · 19/05/2011 13:13

Sometimes it's a mistake.

But sometimes it's just because they're out of print, difficult to get hold of and commonly used references in particular academic fields.

nicklebabe I know someone who does that - he has a HUGE barn to store them all in, because you have to wait for a person that wants it desperately enough...

peeriebear · 19/05/2011 13:14

I looked on amazon for an old out of print childrens book we have (in case I needed to replace) and they had copies for over £50. Just silly.

xstitch · 19/05/2011 13:46

Books are expensive. I had to pay £120 for one at Uni and that was a very long time ago.

WhereYouLeftIt · 19/05/2011 16:29

This book originally had a RRP of £9.99, so not in the same category as expensive specialist textbooks with small print runs.

I've noticed this on Amazon before - as already said, once a book is out of print, resellers seem to feel they can charge the earth. Particularly funny when the reason it's out of print is that a new, updated edition has been release :). Oh yoohoo, you're never going to sell that book at that price ...

Oakmaiden · 19/05/2011 16:33

I have sometimes wondered if Amazon give you a special deal if you have a certain number of products listed on their marketplace, and so sometimes sellers put things on at prices no-one is ever going to want to pay because they don't ACTUALLY have the book but want to up their number of listings. I have no proof of this theory, it is just a theory I have developed whilst scratching my head at the insane prices sometimes on Amazon.

FabbyChic · 19/05/2011 16:34

Its obviously a typo, the paperback version is half the price of what the hardcover would be.

nickelbabe · 19/05/2011 16:38

coastgirl · 19/05/2011 16:43

There's a book I want to read that is long out of print but enough people are interested in it that on the odd occasion that one comes up on eBay, it always sells for £30+! I'm not paying that for a paperback so I guess I'll just never get to read it.

nickelbabe · 19/05/2011 16:45

library, coastgirl Grin

coastgirl · 19/05/2011 16:46

Nope, not in any libraries - they've either been long taken out of circulation (it's 30 years old!) or in the stacks - but when people on forums have gone looking for them the book has often been stolen, probably because you can sell it for £30...

FreudianSlipper · 19/05/2011 16:50

i think a typo. i have purchased some uni books for £10, and seen the same books going for £50+ i guess i was very lucky

though i trying to by ds some wooden magnetic numbers of amazon found some (already had the alphabet) for £9.99. the p&p was £49.99

so i am always careful at checking p&p charges now, luckily i noticed before putting the order through

LRDTheFeministDragon · 19/05/2011 16:54

Some of the books I can't afford but would love cost that much - it's because they have illustrations that cost a lot of money to make. I know this, but still am never in a million years going to shell out for them!

LatherRinseRepeatAsNeeded · 19/05/2011 17:00

I just noticed that it's prices from 168, one seller has it for £225
