Teenage daughter's arm

12 days ago my 15 year old dd hurt her elbow whilst trampolining. She had an icepack put on it and at the end of the day was sent home with the opinion of to get it checked out if any swelling or lack of movement.

There was no swelling, and although the arm was hurting it did not stop her moving it.

The following day she was out in the garden doing cartwheels etc. Then moaning afterwards that her arm hurt.

The following week she spent the week doing activities and then when tired complaining about her arm.

Roll forward to today she's spend 8 hours today at a schools athletics event competing in a number of disciplines, and then has gone on to do 3 hours of gymnastics.

She has now come home from that saying that her arm is hurting, and I have said I'm not surprised I'm more surprised that is the only thing that is hurting over that much sport.

She said that one of the other mothers at gymnastics asked her if she'd had her arm looked at as she once walked round with a fractured arm.

My dh says that as it is hurting her, I should take her down to A&E I have said no as I can't believe it is hurting her so much as she is doing the activities she wants to do, and it is only later when she's tired that she moans about it.

We've been to casualty so many times for sporting injuries with her, last time we went they interviewed her separately, to satisfy that she was doing these injuries outside of the house. But none of these injuries has resulted in anything other than being told it's bruised or a sprained.

AIBU or do you think this could be a case of crying wolf and I should go and spend my evening down in casualty?

Could be a stress fracture or a hairline fracture, I'd get it checked out. Casualty beckons.

Timetowaste · 18/05/2011 20:45

NO please no - god I hate sitting in casualty!

ashamedandconfused · 18/05/2011 20:45

I agree with your friend, I bet its fractured

squeakytoy · 18/05/2011 20:45

If it is still giving her pain after 12 days I would certainly take my child to get it checked out.

squeakytoy · 18/05/2011 20:46

Cant a 15yo go to casualty on her own though?

MoldovanHardHatporn · 18/05/2011 20:46

Take her to get it checked fractured elbows are a bugger

worraliberty · 18/05/2011 20:47

Or course you should take her.

AuntiePickleBottom · 18/05/2011 20:48

take her to a&e, best tio get it checked out

ashamedandconfused · 18/05/2011 20:48

I would not have thought a 15 yo COULD go to A&E on their own, thats why you have to sign to give tecahers parental responsibility for medical consent for trips etc

ohfuckohfuckohfuckduck · 18/05/2011 20:48

Take her

Timetowaste · 18/05/2011 20:48

Bugger bugger - what happened to mothers sticking together - now I've got to admit defeat and sit in casualty Grin

ShirleyKnot · 18/05/2011 20:49

No squeaky.

meaniemo · 18/05/2011 20:49

yep I did this and waited until half term to take my DD and yep within 1 hr she was in a cast and felt like a terrible parent! Take her - if theres nothing wrong you can engage smug mode and tell us all you told us so :D

beesimo · 18/05/2011 20:50

I think you should get of your arse and take your bairn for a x-ray she could quite easily of fractured something I am betting she has cracked her elbow enough to have caused a problem that requires treatment/special exercises. Can't believe your attitude OP get off the computer and do your duty as a Mother

FabbyChic · 18/05/2011 20:50

I also suggest you take her, at least if they tell her to rest it she will have to cease her activities until it is healed.

2ticks · 18/05/2011 20:52

Can DH take her to a&e if he thinks she should go?

Timetowaste · 18/05/2011 20:53

Is now sloping off in best teenage pose down to casualty - if they tell me it's bruised or sprained I want lots of 'so sorry OP you were right as always'.

May tell you if I was wrong!!!!!!!!

iEmbarassedMyself · 18/05/2011 20:53

Get your DH to take her if he thinks she needs it looked at
but I agree that she could do with it being looked at, sooner rather than later

BimboNo5 · 18/05/2011 20:55

It will be fractured- it always is when you think they are playing on it. In a law of the sod kind of way.

pointythings · 18/05/2011 20:56

OP,

Even if it was only a bruise or sprain, it should still be treated if still hurting after 12 days, but I'll grovel in advance if you want me to Smile. Bring a crap novel with lots of bonking, it'll help pass the time.

unfitmother · 18/05/2011 21:01

Take her to the GP tomorrow and they cab decide if she needs an xray.
It's hardly an emergency.

Do you have a local minor injuries unit? They might be able to x-ray it without you having to wait forever in A&E?

PumpkinSnatch · 18/05/2011 21:20

ditto unfitmother - that's what I'd do.

beesimo · 19/05/2011 19:16

What was the verdict OP???
