Teenage daughter's arm

12 days ago my 15 year old dd hurt her elbow whilst trampolining. She had an icepack put on it and at the end of the day was sent home with the opinion of to get it checked out if any swelling or lack of movement.

There was no swelling, and although the arm was hurting it did not stop her moving it.

The following day she was out in the garden doing cartwheels etc. Then moaning afterwards that her arm hurt.

The following week she spent the week doing activities and then when tired complaining about her arm.

Roll forward to today she's spend 8 hours today at a schools athletics event competing in a number of disciplines, and then has gone on to do 3 hours of gymnastics.

She has now come home from that saying that her arm is hurting, and I have said I'm not surprised I'm more surprised that is the only thing that is hurting over that much sport.

She said that one of the other mothers at gymnastics asked her if she'd had her arm looked at as she once walked round with a fractured arm.

My dh says that as it is hurting her, I should take her down to A&E I have said no as I can't believe it is hurting her so much as she is doing the activities she wants to do, and it is only later when she's tired that she moans about it.

We've been to casualty so many times for sporting injuries with her, last time we went they interviewed her separately, to satisfy that she was doing these injuries outside of the house. But none of these injuries has resulted in anything other than being told it's bruised or a sprained.

AIBU or do you think this could be a case of crying wolf and I should go and spend my evening down in casualty?

bump

Agree with unfitmother - it's not an emergency so take her to GP.

HumphreyCobbler · 19/05/2011 20:54

surely if she was doing cartwheels and loads of sport it couldn't be broken? I would have waited till the next day and gone to the GP.

needanewname · 19/05/2011 20:58

So how is she?

DH once tried telling his parent that his ankle really hurt (I think it was after a game of rugby) they just sent him to bed and told him he'd be alright. Then they saw his ankle the next morning - down to A&E - badly broken ankle. He laughs now but at the time.....

TBH I had an accident prone child - It got to the point that I would actually say 'you say what happened - Im just going to the water machine' (all of 6 feet away) and just ear wig incase he missed important bits like "it happened at school"

Bigglewinkle · 20/05/2011 01:34

My sister hurt her wrist on a family skiing holiday and spent the week 'whinging' about it (parents words not mine!)
Turned out she'd broken it... My mum's a physiotherapist and felt dreadful she hadn't taken my sister to casualty immediately, but as it hadn't got swollen or bruised she didn't realise the injury was that serious!
It's a family joke now :)

Has the DD been taken into care for neglect?
Come back OP.

beesimo · 20/05/2011 20:36

Bump WHAT HAPPENED OP!!

fairydoll · 20/05/2011 20:55

A sprain in any case is a worse injury than a fracture. It takes much longer to heal

IdRatherBeInBed · 20/05/2011 22:29

what was the outcome?

skybluepearl · 20/05/2011 22:31

yes you need to take her to hospital and get it checked out

Timetowaste · 21/05/2011 12:17

Sorry we've been away - I took her and sat for 3 hours in joyous casualty for them to look at it - decide that it was probably strained and sent us on our way - they didn't even xray it I felt cheated!!!

Anyway I didn't have to feel guilty and that's the important thing Grin - ok the real important thing is she's okay, and will be right to fight another day!

Good for you OP at least you know now, plus when your very very old and can't clip your own toenails you can say to DD 'ah remember all the times Mam had to take you to bloody Casualty so just get clipping and stop your moaning!'
