To BAN my child from these shows

Like most of us I am not adverse to my six year old watching some tv, but recently he started watching the Cartoon Network. I dont really like a lot of the shows but let it ride for a little bit until I cant actually bear it. Now, one of his rewards of a morning used to be getting tv once he was totally ready of a morning. Ben 10 was on and it worked so I was fine with it. Today I noticed that the line up has changed to two shows that are just horrid. Adventure Time and The Regular show are offensive, unfunny and littered with adult humour that makes ren and stimpy (the equivalent from my generation) look like Something Special. Just to give you an example line from this mornings Adventure Time:

Lead Character trying to get a key: "You had better put out if you are going to flaunt it like that".

Cue TV going off. MASSIVE tantrum from unwitting son and me wondering how far cartoon makers can take this sort of humour for a childs channel. I love the subversive humour in some shows and think things like Family Guy can be very funny but in the right context and at the appropriate age - this is just too far.

Keep an eye ladies - yesterday my and two of his friends came out of their school shouting "yo mamma" which apparentlly means "you are fat" after one of them saw it on The Regular Show. YUCK, YUCK, YUCK. Worst of it is, I can turn it off for him but his little friends all watch it so the vile, violent and misodgynistic humour in them still gets shared around. Lovely.

P.S. Does anyone have a contact for the Cartoon Network so I can whinge make a helpful comment?

Yes, I am way prejudiced against SN.. Hmm I had already admitted I could be wrong , no need to lay into me and call me desperate -nice.

JamieAgain · 18/05/2011 19:26

Well she said it jarred, someone said they thought the reference was innocent and she accepted that.
No need to get all shouty I think.

We all misunderstand or misinterpret at times don't we?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/05/2011 19:28

Why is it thought of as more innocent than other shows such as waybuloo? I guess I found it a bit patronising 'aww kids with SN and their lovely innocent show'. There you go.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/05/2011 19:29

Just I realised why it jarred..but again, no biggie, if I was wrong.

LDNmummy · 18/05/2011 19:30

I used to watch Cartoon Network as a kid and even then some of the shows would weird me out. Ren and Stimpy was awful and disgusting and I remember hating it (Nickelodeon show if I remember correctly).

I wouldn't let my kid watch it and IMO YANBU.

I know lots of adults (people in their 20's) who watch Cartoon Network because the humour is actually appealing to that age range.

NulliusInVerba · 18/05/2011 19:33

Phew, you had me worried there Fanjo!! someone on here said they fancied him!! So wrong :)

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/05/2011 19:34

My DD really likes him, she has few words but 'Mr Tumble'are two of them!

silverfrog · 18/05/2011 19:35

hmm, an interesting point, Fanjo, but I do think you are reading a bit much into it.

after all, Something Special, with Saint Justin (won't hear a word against him in this household, but categorically do NOT fancy him. he is very very nice in RL though) is an innocent show.

I remember Pob, and people getting cross about him spitting on the screen. Seems innocent now - I can't remember what the actual show was though.

Silver frog, maybe, to be honest I posted without a lot of thought, a fault of mine, was just a throwaway comment really, I wasn't desperately offended Smile

Swallowedafly, fair enough, point taken Smile
