To BAN my child from these shows

Like most of us I am not adverse to my six year old watching some tv, but recently he started watching the Cartoon Network. I dont really like a lot of the shows but let it ride for a little bit until I cant actually bear it. Now, one of his rewards of a morning used to be getting tv once he was totally ready of a morning. Ben 10 was on and it worked so I was fine with it. Today I noticed that the line up has changed to two shows that are just horrid. Adventure Time and The Regular show are offensive, unfunny and littered with adult humour that makes ren and stimpy (the equivalent from my generation) look like Something Special. Just to give you an example line from this mornings Adventure Time:

Lead Character trying to get a key: "You had better put out if you are going to flaunt it like that".

Cue TV going off. MASSIVE tantrum from unwitting son and me wondering how far cartoon makers can take this sort of humour for a childs channel. I love the subversive humour in some shows and think things like Family Guy can be very funny but in the right context and at the appropriate age - this is just too far.

Keep an eye ladies - yesterday my and two of his friends came out of their school shouting "yo mamma" which apparentlly means "you are fat" after one of them saw it on The Regular Show. YUCK, YUCK, YUCK. Worst of it is, I can turn it off for him but his little friends all watch it so the vile, violent and misodgynistic humour in them still gets shared around. Lovely.

P.S. Does anyone have a contact for the Cartoon Network so I can whinge make a helpful comment?

DSS is nearly 7 but he's been watching family guy for the past two years I think. My DDs watch it occasionally and they're younger than he is.

JamieAgain · 18/05/2011 18:53

I have only had the misfortune to watch those girls show like iCarly a couple of times. All the head waggling and campery really irks me. No wonder 9 year old girls are so faux-teenagery

IHeartKingThistle · 18/05/2011 18:54

I don't think any child should be watching Family Guy, sorry.

It's a cartoon but it's on very late because it is very, very adult in content. It's not like all of it would go over kids' heads either because it's also very violent. It's funny, but definitely not for kids.

Pagwatch · 18/05/2011 19:00

I wouldn't let a child watch family guy either.

doley · 18/05/2011 19:01

I don't think op said she allowed her child to watch it ,just that she could understand/appreciate the humour more .

I am sick of the Disney channel ,when we go back to the UK I hope to get away with telling DS7 it isn't on there Wink

pinkytheshrinky · 18/05/2011 19:03

My children - almost 10/7.5 and 2.5 only watch cbbc and cbeebies - I am very pleased we don't let them watch commercial channels and cartoon channels and it is going to stay that way for the time being. Even Ben10 in my opinion is far too hectic

You are being completely reasonable

IHeartKingThistle · 18/05/2011 19:05

Doley it wasn't the OP we were responding to there, sorry!

doley · 18/05/2011 19:08

sorry ,Iheart just the way I read it :)

I think use sky+ to record ben 10 and ds can watch anytime! I do that for my ds as he loves octonauts
He's only 2 nd not gone beyond cbeebies though!

galois · 18/05/2011 19:10

that's why mine only watch DVDs.

Is this ok for a catsbum mouth >

theglove · 18/05/2011 19:12

DS loves Adventure Time, it's quite funny and inventive. The more grown up phrases go over his head. We don't have CN though, it's probably what stops me getting a Virgin tv, it'd be on all the time.

silverfrog · 18/05/2011 19:12

I can't believe anyone lets a child watch Family Guy.

hardly children's tv, is it?

just because it is a cartoon, doesn't mean it is suitable for children...

NulliusInVerba · 18/05/2011 19:15

You should always be careful what they are listening to, I used to blank alot of it out because my DC were watching the more "acceptable" channels if you like.

Once I actually listened to one of the stories and was gobsmacked. Summary is this -

Little girl starts school. She is a very naughty girl, shouts at her mummy and rude to teachers, keeps getting into trouble.

Little girl decides to change her ways. Becomes nice girl, is good at school and nice to her mummy. Lovely.

But then, once she is good and kind to the teachers no one is her friend anymore. She has no friends at all. So little girl goes back to being very naughty and very cheeky.
And gets lots of friends.

WTF? I did this face Shock and turned it off. My child was 4.

psychovillemum31 · 18/05/2011 19:16

YANBU. IMHO part of being a parent it to create a degree of normality in your home. The phrases in the show you mentioned are absolutely appalling for a childrens show. I personally wouldn't want language like that being used in my house. I can't believe that people let children watch family guy. How can they understand the context of the adult content.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/05/2011 19:16

Not impressed by the reference to 'something special'

silverfrog · 18/05/2011 19:18

eh?

not sure why you wouldn't be, Fanjo.

I read the OP as saying that the shows she dislikes are so horrid that, by comparison ren and stimpy (manky horrid show) was almost as sweet and nice as Somethign Special...

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/05/2011 19:19

Well, I hope it meant that Smile

silverfrog · 18/05/2011 19:21

I'm not sure how it could mean anythign else (but may have missed somehting)
