I've just used some cheap Sainsbo's dental floss and my gums are rebelling. AIBU to think that you shouldn't compromise on certain products - recession or no recession!

Teabags. they MUST be branded and that brand must be either Yorkshire, twinings, or builders!

BagofHolly · 18/05/2011 08:16

Sheets! 100% cotton or nothing! And they last for years and years!

Bloodymary · 18/05/2011 08:23

Has to be cotton sheets, also a small piece of fillet steak rather than a large piece of tough meat (altho a vegan friend of mine likes to point out that I am the worst kind of carnivore. 'What about the rest of that poor beast'?)
Plus, proper fitted shoes for little girl.

pingu2209 · 18/05/2011 08:26

Shoes
Mattress
Meat - any kind - don't buy the economy version

kreecherlivesupstairs · 18/05/2011 08:42

In common with most people, I am going for shoes, bed and meat. i will add cigarettes too. In Thailand I found cigs that were half the price of my usual Marlboro red. I smoked them for three days and got a shocking cough. I stumped up the 55p they cost after that.

mamalovebird · 18/05/2011 08:52

Moisturiser - since having ds I have moved into the 'magical beauty serum' and 'lift & luminate' type skincare that costs the equivalent to a meal out, but they seem to work and I never get a meal out anyway so it's my one indulgence.

Meat. I'd rather eat vegetables only than factory farmed, injected with water meat.

Red wine - life really is too short for a chep wine.

mamalovebird · 18/05/2011 08:53

*cheap wine Blush

winnybella · 18/05/2011 08:58

Shoes
Meat
Wine
Clingfilm

BelovedCunt · 18/05/2011 09:00

ah! another princess thread.

i use the cheapest lidl loo paper, my arse hasn't fallen off yet.

i do agree on bras if you are blessed in the chest department

beesimo · 18/05/2011 09:01

The house could be on jam and bread rations and us all wiping our bots on newspaper but Beesimo will never ever give up her expensive face creme!!

Suncottage · 18/05/2011 09:02

Cotton sheets - I have got cotton sheets that are twenty years old and just seem to get better with age.

beesimo · 18/05/2011 09:03

I am not being selfish I have FCA it is a serious mental health issue

Ooopsadaisy · 18/05/2011 09:04

In the name of budgeting I will try anything.

However, following recent experiences, I will never scrimp on a good bra.

Teabags are the only thing that need to be right.

Any cleaning products will do (home-made recipes are great too) so long as they work.

Have just used B&Q Trade paint and it looks great and was easy to work with.

So long as food actually has the nutritional value it should have, I don't mind cheaper brands.

Otherwise I'll always opt for a bargain, whether it's a cheaper waxing salon or an old friend who cuts my hair for free. So long as the result is what I want then it's ok.

lookingfoxy · 18/05/2011 09:06

Bread and toilet roll and shoes for ds are my only indulgences that must be 'good quality'.
Meals are always good quality, even from cheaper cuts as I home cook a lot and am pretty nifty at it now.
Not that I have much choice on anything else!! (skint face)

ChinnityRhino · 18/05/2011 09:07

I read the op and thought why is she buying dental floss anyway?

its a thing I wouldn't spend on at all

Miggsie · 18/05/2011 09:11

Bras
A whole chicken (we eat chicken once a month but it is GOOD chicken!)
Walking shoes
Outdoor coats. I expect mine to last 10 years.

Ooopsadaisy · 18/05/2011 09:12

Would like to add:

Waterproof clothing and walking boots and socks. Survival essentials (she said, dramatically!)

BelovedCunt · 18/05/2011 09:14

a few quid on dental floss would probably save a lot of folk 100s at the dentist

Nancy66 · 18/05/2011 09:15

I'm a double DD and the best bra I ever had was from Tesco for a tenner.

ShowOfHands · 18/05/2011 09:18

Yes to toilet roll. Plus bin bags and cling film. Oh and washing up liquid. False economy.

There's nothing I wouldn't and haven't scrimped on. Needs must.
As long as food is safe to eat then it is still food. The same with clothes and toiletries, of course it is nice to have more expensive versions but it is not essential.

QueenLaQueefer · 18/05/2011 09:25

I will use cheapo loo roll, but not coffee or wine.

Shampoo, shower gel etc can be 10p basics, but I need good make up etc. (Except mascara.)

Bargain basement cleaning products are fine too if you add a little elbow grease.

TBH, I'd rather (and do) buy decent clothes from ebay or the charity shop than Tu/Cherokee/Primark new.

I'd rather buy decent, solid furniture too, even if it's from the dump. I bought some new drawers from Argos once. Lasted a year & cost ££. False economy IMO.

Only the rich can afford cheap shoes.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/05/2011 09:27

coffee. I would rather go without than drink horrible coffee.

Bumperlicioso · 18/05/2011 09:34

I'm mostly with fatlazymummy in that there is very little I insist on buying expensive versions of, loo roll, own brand tea bags etc. I think one of the few branded things I buy are nappies. Used to by sainsbo's own but the just leaked.

I have nice sheets but they were wedding presents. Yesterday we bought a lovely new bedding set in Ikea for £4!

One thing I wish I had spent money on is gap kid's sock! They label their socks with the size and I am so sick of trying to figure out which size socks fit either of the dds!

Dh insists on Heinz ketchup and beans but I'm not fussy about those. I think I will try most cheaper versions of things but no point in keep on buying them if they don't work or taste like crap.

I often get a stuffy nose and find the Breathe Right strips work a treat. Tried a cheap £1 version from the pharmacy but they kept pinging off in the night!
